California Inmates Donate Hair To Locks Of Love

When a dozen female inmates each filed into their respective barbers? chair, they continued a 15-year tradition of doing good.

The 12 women from Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla, Calif., chopped their long locks for charity -- each donating 10 or more inches Thursday to Locks of Love. The organization makes free hairpieces for low-income young people suffering from long-term hair loss due to any medical condition, the Merced Sun-Star reports.

Many of the inmates also happen to be mothers, and the opportunity to help a child in need just seemed like a natural fit.

Angela Guarjardo, 32, told the news source she hopes her three kids will be proud of her.

"It makes you feel like you're doing something good," Guarjardo said. "You're giving back. You're stepping up your game now. You're showing, OK, I'm back, I'm doing something good."

This long-held tradition came on the heels of a new national appeal to get even more men and women to give up their tresses to Locks of Love.

Seventeen Magazine and Pantene Beautiful Lengths dubbed April 27 the first-ever National Donate Your Hair Day. Many salons hopped on board, offering discounted cuts for those brave enough to sheer their strands.

?Our 13 million readers love their hair, but it?s even more important for them to give back in the world,? Ann Shoket, Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen Magazine, said in a press release. ?Every action, large or small, can make a huge difference in the life of a woman battling cancer.?

Tim Cook: Apple doubling-down on Siri, 'stay tuned' on Facebook developments

Image

Well, it looks like secrecy isn't the only thing that Apple is doubling-down on these days. Speaking at D10, Tim Cook said that that Apple is "doubling down on Siri," adding that "you'll be really pleased with what you see in the coming months on this." He did also acknowledge that Siri currently has its shortcomings, but said that "customers love it," and that "what makes Siri cool is that she has a personality." When it came to a largely non-existent iOS feature at the moment -- Facebook integration -- Cook said to "stay tuned," noting that he has "great respect for them," and that he wants Facebook's hundreds of millions of customers to have "the best experience" on the iPhone and iPad.

Treating Prostate Cancer with Hormone Therapy

Prostate cancer hormone therapy refers to the process of interrupting of the body?s production of testosterone which, may help stop or slow the growth and spread of prostate cancer. It is also known as androgen deprivation therapy.

The sex hormone testosterone is what causes the growth of the prostate gland and other sexual organs in males. Even after puberty, testosterone continues to cause the prostate to grow. However testosterone cannot tell the difference between healthy cells and cancerous cells.? Hormone therapy cuts off the supply of hormones that fuel the growth of cells, which can slow and even stop the growth of the tumor.

Testosterone production in the body is controlled by the hypothalamus gland located in the brain. If a person?s testosterone levels drop, this gland releases chemical triggers to stimulate the release of more of the hormone.

There are four basic methods of hormone therapy to combat prostate cancer:

Castration

Castration, also known as orchiectomy, surgically removes the testicles, which produces 90% of the body?s testosterone. Orchiectomy is effective in quickly lowering testosterone levels.

Estrogen

Estrogen is the female sex hormone, but when it is introduced into the body it confuses the hypothalamus into ceasing testosterone production. Estrogen treatment is not commonly used to treat prostate cancer due to the fact that the synthetic version has been shown to cause serious cardiovascular problems.

Anti-Androgens

Anti-androgens fill the receptors in prostate cells. These receptors are responsible for how the prostate receives testosterone and by blocking them; it is possible to stop the growth of cancer cells. Unlike other forms of hormone treatment, anti-androgens do not interfere with the production of testosterone in the body. Because of this, men typically experience fewer or less severe side-effects such as urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction.

Combined Androgen Blockade

This method is used to treat more advanced or severe cases of prostate cancer and involves both castration and anti-androgens. This method prevents the testicles from producing 90% of the body?s testosterone and blocks the prostate?s ability to receive the hormone.

Hormone therapy is often used to shrink the prostate prior to radiation therapy in early-stage prostate cancer. This makes the tumor much easier to destroy using radiation treatments. Hormone therapy is also sometimes used after surgery or radiation to help prevent the recurrence of the cancer cells.

As with other forms of prostate cancer treatment, hormone therapy carries the risk of erectile dysfunction and may also increase the risk of heart disease or heart attack.

Iran, other Mideast states hit by computer virus

LONDON (AP) ? Iran and other Middle East countries have been hit with a cunning computer virus that can eavesdrop on computer users and their co-workers and filch information from nearby cellphones, cybersecurity experts said Tuesday. And suspicion immediately fell on Israel as the culprit.

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the "Flame" virus is unprecedented in size and complexity, with researcher Roel Schouwenberg marveling at its versatility.

"It can be used to spy on everything that a user is doing," he said.

Computers in Iran appear to have been particularly affected, and Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Schouwenberg said there is evidence to suggest that the people behind Flame also helped craft Stuxnet, a virus that is believed to have attacked nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Tehran has not said whether it lost any data to Flame, but a unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said it has produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from its computers.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the attack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Researchers not involved in Flame's discovery were more skeptical of its sophistication than Kaspersky, with Richard Bejtlich of Virginia-based Mandiant saying the virus appeared similar to spyware used by the German government to monitor criminal suspects.

"There have been tool like this employed by high-end teams for many years," he said.

Colorado-based Webroot said the virus wasn't as complex or as stealthy as Stuxnet and was "a relatively easy threat to identify."

Flame is unusually large. Malicious programs collected by the British security firm Sophos averaged about 340 kilobytes in 2010, the same year that Kaspersky believes Flame first started spreading. Flame is 20 megabytes ? nearly 60 times that figure.

Alan Woodward, a professor of computing at the University of Surrey in England, said functions can be added or subtracted to the virus depending on what kind of espionage is desired, not unlike the way apps can be downloaded to a smartphone.

He was particularly struck by Flame's ability to turn an infected computer into a kind of "industrial vacuum cleaner," copying data from vulnerable cellphones or other Bluetooth wireless devices left near it.

"I don't believe I've seen it before," he said.

Udi Mokady, chief executive of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he believes four countries, in no particular order, have the know-how to develop so sophisticated a weapon: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia.

"It was 20 times more sophisticated than Stuxnet," with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said. "It's a live program that communicates back to its master. It asks, 'Where should I go? What should I do now?' It's really almost like a science fiction movie."

It's not clear exactly what the virus was targeting. Kaspersky said it detected the program in hundreds of computers, mainly in Iran but also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The company would not give details on the victims except to say that they "range from individuals to certain state-related organizations or educational institutions."

Schouwenberg said stolen data was being sent to some 80 different servers, something that would give the virus' controllers time to adjust their tactics if they were discovered.

As for Flame's purpose, "maybe it's just espionage," he said. "Maybe it's also sabotage."

Swing for the Cure Raises Money for Cancer | fox4kc.com ? Kansas ...

OLATHE, Kan. ? The Swing for the Cure is in its second year. A metro family hopes to raise money using baseball to battle cancer. The Wade family loves baseball. It?s a passion for them.

?Baseball, that?s what we do,? said Eric Wade. ?We play baseball at home with all three boys play baseball. My dad played baseball, I played baseball.?

In December of 2007, Jimmie Wade or Hooty as his family and friends call him, found a lump near his ear. It turned out to be cancer. Instead of looking at the disease as a strike out. The Wades battled through. After surgery, Hooty went through six weeks of radiation.

Instead of going home and going to bed, he would go to the baseball diamond. Often too tired to play, he helped coach the younger guys. So, his family decided to make a difference for others battling cancer.

They started the Swing for the Cure Baseball Tournament. They raised $1,500 for the KU Cancer Center in 2011. They hope to double that amount in 2012.

Hooty is now cancer free and going into his senior year of college at Ottawa University and of course playing baseball. The fact that America?s pastime is allowing his family help others battle cancer makes it all the more special.

?It just makes me feel good to see these little guys come out and play and have fun and enjoy the game,? Hooty said.? ?I don?t know if some of them even know how big it is and what they?re actually helping.?

All donations from Swing for the Cure go to the KU Cancer Center.

How to Keep Your Cool Investing in Europe: TEF, IBDRY, STD, TOT ...

By?Charles Sizemore

Charles Sizemore

Charles Sizemore

It?s a little early for Christmas in July, but now is the time for investors to be putting together their ?Christmas lists? of sorts.

Recently, I wrote a piece that described an old investment strategy of Sir John Templeton (see ?An Anniversary We?d Prefer to Forget?).?Sir John would make a list of companies he?d love to own ?if only? they fell to a more attractive price.?He would then place limit orders to buy those companies at prices substantially below the current market price. In the event of a sharp sell off, the limit order would be executed, and Sir John would have his shares at the prices he always wanted.

His rationale for the strategy was simple enough: we humans are instinctively herd animals, and we tend to panic when we see others around us panicking. We lose our independent judgment and we freeze in fear at exactly the moment we should be buying aggressively. Templeton?s move was designed to take his own emotions out of the equation; Sir John understood his own human shortcomings, and essentially gamed himself.

Today, with Europe teetering on the edge of a potential meltdown, I?m going to recommend that investors take a similar approach, though mine has the added bonus of adding a little extra income.

I recommend that you make a list of strong multinational companies based in Europe that you are confident can survive Armageddon with their businesses intact.

Ideally, these companies would have significant percentages of their revenues coming from outside of the Eurozone.

Once you have your list of stocks, consider selling deep out-of-the-money puts on them. If prices remain relatively stable or rise, the options expire worthless and you pocket the premium. And if the share prices take a nosedive, the options will be exercised and you will be obligated to buy the shares at the prevailing market price ? which was your objective all along. And you still get to pocket the premium.

Here a little explanation is needed. When you buy an option, whether it be a call or put, your risk is limited to the price you paid for the options. You are buying the right to buy or sell shares at a given price, not the obligation.

Selling, however, is a much trickier business. Your upside is limited to the premium at the time you sell the option. But your downside is much, much bigger. In fact, when selling a naked call option, your risk is theoretically infinite. For example, if you sell the right to buy Facebook, Inc.?(NASDAQ:FB)?at $38 to another investor and the stock rises to $100 the next day, you?re on the hook to buy at the prevailing market rate of $100 and sell at $38. Not an appealing prospect.

Likewise, when you sell a put, you are giving an investor the right to sell you shares at a price that might be far higher than the prevailing market price. So, when selling put options on your list of European stocks you?d like to own, make sure that you have the cash on hand to handle the trade if it is exercised. Don?t get greedy and sell contracts for more shares than you can afford to buy or that you would ideally like to own.

I?m not going to recommend specific put option contracts for you to sell because the entire point of this article was for you to create a list of stocks you like at prices you want to pay. I also want the advice in this article to be general and something that you can use months or years from now; recommending a specific contract would make this article too short-term for my liking.

I will, however, toss out a few company names for you to consider. Last week, I recommended Spanish blue chips Telefonica SA?(NYSE:TEF), Iberdrola SA?(PINK:IBDRY)?and Banco Santander SA?(NYSE:STD)?(see ?Bargain Hunting in Spain?).

I continue to like all three, and to this list I would add French oil major Total SA?(NYSE:TOT)?and British telecom giant Vodafone Group Plc?(NASDAQ:VOD). While Vodafone is not a Eurozone stock, it has significant operations in the Eurozone and I would expect its share price to take a tumble in a general market rout.

If you?re not comfortable with options, that?s ok. You can accomplish essentially the same thing by placing limit orders like Templeton.

Military expert says Azerbaijan has unsettled conflicts with neighbors

Azerbaijan shares unsettled conflicts with all its neighbors, military expert Artsrun Hovhannisyan said today in a news conference adding that due to the powerful states they remain frozen.

?Each of the conflicts has a war risk. Although potential war with Russia is little possible, military operations with Georgia, Turkmenistan and Iran are on high risk,? said Artsrun Hovhannisyan.

The expert said Azerbaijan has created such atmosphere himself which is evident that it is an artificial state with serious interior and foreign problems, said the expert.

Bluetooth SIG Confirms Samsung Galaxy S III For Verizon (SGH-I535) and Sprint (SGH-L710)

Bluetooth SIG Confirms Galaxy S III For Verizon and Sprint

A few days ago, we?ve seen both the T-Mobile and AT&T versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III approved by Bluetooth SIG. Now, we are seeing similar listing of the Galaxy S III handset for both the Sprint and Verizon networks and are now registered and approved with Bluetooth SIG for the Bluetooth 4.0 specification. Earlier this month, Verizon?s version of the Samsung Galaxy S III handset appeared in NenaMark benchmark test with model number SGH-I535, using the Qualcomm Adreno 225 GPU.

Bluetooth SIG has approved CDMA version of the Samsung Galaxy S III and the model number SGH-I535 also matches with the model number of the device pop in NenaMark benchmark test last week. So, this is source is enough to conclude that GSI is arriving on Verizon. Sprint?s version is SGH-L710 and it has been also spotted at the Bluetooth SIG. This is seemingly confirmed by leaked photo shots of the Galaxy S III, which also says that SGH-L710 is the model number of the Sprint branded Samsung Galaxy S III.

Samsung has yet to officially confirm that which mobile operator will get the Galaxy S III handset in the U.S. So far, the generic placeholders at Bluetooth SIG website have confirmed that all the four major will carry the Samsung Galaxy S III handset in the U.S., where it should be available starting June.

New CBC Hockey Night in Canada duo faces criticism

The CBC hopes to expand the national hockey audience with new online programming featuring a pair of best girlfriends gabbing about the hairstyles and uniforms of hockey players during next week?s Stanley Cup Finals.

Lena Sutherland and Jules Mancuso, gal pals living in New York and Toronto, created the website, WhileTheMenWatch.com. The idea for the site was born on an afternoon begrudgingly spent watching a football game with their sports-obsessed husbands. Sutherland and Mancuso decided to talk to each other over the phone and provided colour co-ordinated commentary on what was happening on the gridiron.

?We thought to ourselves, wouldn?t it be great if we could have a way of listening to an audio stream for women?? Sutherland said.

The afternoon chat turned into regular Skype dates to watch and comment on the games.

The CBC will host the duo?s banter on its website with video of Sutherland and Mancuso streaming alongside a feed of the hockey games, calling it WhileTheMenWatch Hockey Night. The broadcaster has also given the pair a blog to co-author.

As the programming news launched, hockey fans expressed their disapproval on social media, lambasting the pair for setting women sports fans back decades and reinforcing gender stereotypes.

Marsha Boyd is an Edmonton Oilers season-ticket holder who blogs about the team she has loved since she was a little girl. She agreed more women seem interested in hockey, but fans like herself have had to prove how much they know and love the game because they?re women.

?They?re saying ?Your man will watch the game and we?re going to give you an alternate commentary because you?re a woman, and you don?t know anything about hockey and you just want to look at pretty boys and you?re stupid,?? Boyd said of the pair.

?It?s horribly sexist and it gives all women, I think, a bad name.?

Julie Bristow, executive director of studio and unscripted programming at CBC, thinks the conversation that happens between Sutherland and Mancuso will draw in the social viewers of hockey who may not be all that interested in faceoffs and penalty shots, but would watch a big game to be able to talk about it around the water cooler the next day, regardless of gender.

?I don?t think it?s sexist in any way,? Bristow said. ?The title may be where those comments are coming from, but I really think the content is meant for anybody that?s a casual viewer of the game.?

Even with former women?s hockey players Hayley Wickenheiser and Cassie Campbell-Pascall saying they don?t find the premise sexist, Boyd isn?t convinced.

?I know they?re trying to draw in non-hockey fans but they?re basically insulting the current hockey fans.? Boyd said. ?We already have a tough time because women aren?t really respected as hockey or even sports fans.?

?I?d like to think that women in 2012 are pretty secure in our position in society than an entertaining show about hockey is not really going to jeopardize that,? Sutherland said.

Sutherland and Mancuso respect female sports journalists and women who truly love watching traditional sports broadcasts.

Going to the moon? Don't touch the artifacts

Don?t say you haven?t been warned. NASA put out an official document on Thursday specifying how close any future spacecraft and astronauts visiting the moon can come to the artifacts left there by all U.S. space missions, including the Apollo landing sites, robotic landing sites such as Surveyor's, and spacecraft impact sites.

These recommendations are not mandatory ? there?s obviously no way to enforce this yet. Instead, the document says the guidelines are "offered to inform lunar spacecraft mission planners interested in helping preserve and protect lunar historic artifacts and potential science opportunities for future missions."

For example, NASA recommends an artifact boundary extending 75 meters (246 feet) from the Apollo 11 lunar module descent stage, and an exclusion zone extending even farther (225 meters, or 738 feet) for the Apollo 17 site.

    3. Going to the moon? Don't touch the artifacts
    4. Here's how to win a NASA 'present from space'

NASA isn?t expecting a rush of astro-looters to descend upon the moon, but with China discussing a moon landing, and with several Google Lunar X Prize teams hoping to send robotic landers, the space agency wants to make sure nothing from previous missions is disturbed.

"In the 50 years since the first lunar missions, the spaceflight community has not formally provided recommendations to the next generation of lunar explorers on how to preserve the original artifacts and protect ongoing science from the potentially damaging effects of nearby landers,? NASA said in an accompanying press release, saying that they recognize the steadily increasing technical capabilities of spacefaring commercial entities and nations throughout the world that may be on the verge of landing spacecraft on the surface of the Moon.

The document specifies how close another spacecraft can hover, fly over, hop or touch down near landing sites or spacecraft. NASA suggests a "descent/landing boundary" of 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) around lander sites such as the Apollo and Surveyor sites, and a boundary of 500 meters (0.3 miles) around impact sites such as the Ranger crash sites. Spacecraft should not cross that boundary during descent and landing, NASA said.

NASA?s decisions on proximity boundaries were made from recommendations from external experts from the historic, scientific and flight-planning communities and apply to US government artifacts on the lunar surface.

Hardware items aren't the only things included in the "don?t touch" areas: "U.S. human, human-robotic lunar presence, including footprints, rover tracks, etc., although not all anthropogenic indicators are protected as identified in the recommendations," the document says.

NASA says they released this document to open discussions with commercial and international space agencies, and seek any improvements to the recommendations.

Why SMBs Should Change to the Best Phone Service Now

When the Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) system was initially introduced, it didn?t immediately become a hit because it has lots of weaknesses then. Its ?perfected? version was presented to the world a few years after. Many phone service providers have been inclined to offer it as the best phone service possible since then. Due to competition, providers were challenged to give more inexpensive and higher quality phone services. The demand for this kind of phone service has been on an growing trend ever since customers like small to medium businesses (SMBs) discovered its advantages and practicality.

As of 2010, there are more than 94,000 SMBs in the United States, and a lot of of them have been enjoying the benefits of the best phone service in the form of VoIP. A study revealed that 81% of them have implemented or planned VoIP phone services in 2011. One more study showed that there will probably be a doubled increase in the spending of SMBs on unified communications by 2015. These figures speak for the effectiveness and efficiency of the VoIP system. Nonetheless, there are still a lot of SMBs that are hesitant about reaching phone service providers to have VoIP installed in their companies. One reason is that on-premise solutions like making use of in-house servers offer much more security for their confidential data. On the contrary, as providers of VoIP turn out to be more committed to the industry, this issue of security has also turn out to be their major concern.

To help you out in deciding and finally implementing the VoIP system in your business, listed here are some pointers you can consider:

. Enhanced security.

Time may come that security issues will threaten your business. You?ll be able to ease your worries away with VoIP providers because they also provide service-level agreement. So, if there are security threats, your business can continue on its operation because the provider will take responsibility of addressing the issue.

. Accessible and experienced staff.

The best VoIP providers have a team of well-trained technicians. They were able to master the nitty-gritty of the VoIP system through their years of experience in the industry. The system that can adjust to the unique needs of your company can be deployed and managed by a team from the service provider. Aside from that, whenever issues arise in your communications system, you can access them very easily. This makes VoIP phone service more effective in comparison to the traditional telephone system.

. Greater innovation.

With VoIP phone service, the provider offers the software and hardware. This ensures that you are benefiting from advance technological tools. There are always new technological advancements that are introduced in the market. This can be used by the provider to upgrade the system, which will eventually benefit you.

These are the reasons why the VoIP system certainly is the best phone service on the market compared to the traditional system. Aside from security, innovation and skilled technicians, the VoIP phone service is very affordable. So, switch to VoIP system now and enjoy its advantages. Just be sure to select the best phone service provider you can find. You can compare different providers and see if their services suit the requirements of your company. Two Fort Worth, Texas, fishermen have been charged in the killing of a large alligator, but both say they were protecting themselves and never intended to commit any crime.

Keyon Ivory, 31, and his friend, Patrick Miller, 34, said they panicked when they encountered the gator while fishing earlier this month along the Trinity River near the Fort Worth Nature Center.

"I was in the front seat here, steering," Ivory told NBCDFW.com, pointing to his small bass boat.

Suddenly, he saw the alligator rising from the water. He said it was "a huge one; I mean, bigger than the boat we were on."

The boat is 10 feet long. The alligator was 11.

"I was scared. I was very scared," Miller said. "When it started coming towards us, that's when we really got scared."

The men said they feared for their lives and jumped out of the boat.

"I instantly panicked," Ivory said. "My heart raced a beat, you know. I mean us, everyday guys, we don't see something like that on the water every day."

Miller admitted that he shot the gator. He said he brought the gun with him because it was new and he didn't want someone to steal it from his car.

Ivory then called 911 to report what had just happened.

"We tried doing the right thing," Miller said.

They waited for sheriff's deputies to arrive and said they fully cooperated.

Investigation contradicts attack claim
The men initially claimed in the 911 call that they had been attacked, but the investigation found they did not shoot the gator in self-defense,?Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman Mike Cox said.

Ivory got tickets for having an unregistered boat and not having life preservers.

Miller was cited for illegal hunting and fined $5,300.

He said he cannot pay the fine.

"We just don't want to go to jail," Ivory said.

Both men apologized for what they did, even though they thought at the time they were protecting themselves, they said.

"Most of all, we have our remorse for it," Ivory said. "I want to apologize, like I say, over and over again to the Nature Center about it because we're not no poachers. We would never harm anything. We would never shoot an innocent bird."

They both said they have had nightmares since the incident.

Animal experts say most alligators do not pose a threat to people.
