Having Effective And Efficient Relationships | Self Improvement

Often, relationships are perceived as very delicate things, that require extra effort to maintain. However, a relationship can also be something that can provide security and can also be long lasting despite many trials. Building effective and lasting relationships is a necessity for several reasons. For example in a group or organization, the ability of the people to improve their lives depends on how efficient and effective that group or organization works.

The group or organization is also dependent on how the members work well with the management.

An ineffective group or organization can really be very frustrating. An effective group or organization can also ask so much on their members, that sometimes the members would be having no life outside the walls of the area where they work or sacrifice the other aspects of their life just to meet deadlines. For an organization or group with this kind of scenario, relationships can be stressed or suffer from breakdown.

People or other entities who depend on these groups or organization also suffer.

Society is defined as an extended social group having a distinctive cultural and economic organization. It is the manner or condition in which the members of a community live together for their mutual benefit. . Having a relationship that is good, where cooperation and respect are manifested, can make society work better. This way, each member works towards a common goal for the good of the whole group.. This can only be attained with effective and efficient relationships.

Understanding the other parties? feeling and position creates an effective and efficient relationship. The easiest way to understand what is important to another party is to ask them what they want and listen to what they have to say. When the other party realizes this, they would feel the importance given to them.

Effective and efficient relationships require parties to openly express their feelings and positions on all matters pertinent on the relationship. Assuming that the other party understands our needs and give us when we need it without asking for it is not a good practice.

Respect is the key to relationship. In order to create a more effective relationship, parties should treat each other with respect. We can show respect just by listening to the other party and by trying sincerely to understand how they function. You can also show respect to other parties by confirming that they are doing everything they can.

The opposite of respect is quick forming of judgments based on unfounded facts and prejudice.

Respect is the very foundation for a great relationship. This also means respecting yourself and respecting others.

Another key area in forming an effective relationship is to tackle differences of the other party directly. Differences between parties or people is a very interesting subject. For example in a conversation where each party listens to the other party, you may observe that each is having two different perspectives.

Work towards a win-win solution for both parties.

This can be done when at least one party acknowledges that the relationship is important. That party would then exert more time, effort and energy to understand the other party?s needs and deal with it to get it out of the way. Should they fail, it is comforting for that party to know that they tried.

Effectively listening and no pre-judging. This is important if parties are to understand each other. Having informal discussions are conducive for both parties. They bring out issues and concerns comfortably. They also feel more relaxed making them think more clearly.

Developing an atmosphere where the other party can express their feelings when they need to.

When parties fail to express whatever is on their mind or their feelings, it can get in the way of building an effective relationship.

Parties should be aware that certain things exist naturally but should be controlled in any dealings in any relationship. Human nature is one. Some of these things found in a relationship also include a history of stereotyping or mistrust, blaming the other person or party for a strained relationship, excluding the other party?s feelings when focusing on a task, no clear and defined objectives, roles and expectations of each party in a relationship is also unclear.

Relationships are important to anyone for improving life, addressing issues and problems right away is a must to further improve the relationship. As they say ?No man is an Island?.

We also have a self improvement blog where Patric Chan?shares his personal success secrets and strategies regularly.

Why Quality Articles Build Online Business Link Popularity ...

The quality in?the online business?is a funny thing. Who determines, what is quality and what is spam? Who says, which article is useful and which is not? My opinion is, that the writer is the only person who will have the power to influence on the article content. After it is published online, the feedback, the results, will tell whether it was a success. It does not matter, whether an?online business marketing article?is published off or online, or whether it is called as an article or something else. What matters is the content and slightly also the medium, where the consumer will see it. You know, medium is a message.

1. The Article, Which Shares Benefits Works Better Than An Ad.

People see an article like a newspaper article, i.e. that the target is not to advertise. That is good for?the online businessarticles and that is the reason, why good articles work better than the ads. They have more authority. They do not push a product, but make the reader to want useful information. The product is a side thing. Unfortunately the market is full of spam articles and some directories even store them. This was the reason, why Google started Panda program and downgraded certain directories, because they had too much spam articles.

2. Only The Quality Creates A Good Net Presence.

I am sure, that every single writer knows, what is quality. However, some of them are only hunting more links with the low quality articles, of which some may be the products of some software. Who wants these articles? Honestly nobody, but the system cannot stop these spammers to submit them into directories. We all have seen a lot of quality articles, which share useful information and which are well written. These marketers are on the long term trip to sustainable success. They think, before they write and do not use sofware or article spinning. The brands, which they build will be strong and will work for a long time.

3. High Quality Links Are Results From High Quality Articles.

Spammers like spammers, but serious marketers do not want to link to the spammers site. The high page rank site wants to link with the high quality site. One link from a high page rank site is more valuable than hundred links from page rank zero sites.

4. High Quality Article Builds High Page Rank Links And Brings New Audiencies.

People, who appreciate quality?in the internet?marketing want to cooperate with the same thinkers. One high quality article can bring a huge amount of new people visiting to the landing page. And these people are well linked through social media, which can mean more links to you. Which group do you think will convert better, the tyre kickers or the serious marketers, who hunt quality in everything?

5. Links Are Easy To Build, But The Site Needs Visitors, Human Beings.

If a marketer builds only links by submitting whatever material, it will ruin the whole operation, because it will kill the brand. Yes, bad quality kills the brand. It is a problem, that so many are after the quantity. Still only the quality will determine, who will win. To do one thing well is hundred times better than to do one thing badly. One good thing to be able to judge, whether an article works well, i.e. is of high quality, is to see the results from the article directory stats page. How many have read the article, how many have emailed it and how many copied?

Capstone Report ? Alabama players earn academic honors

Alabama players earn academic honors

Three Alabama players were recognized with Academic All-American honors. The official release is below (courtesy of UA Media Relations):

Alabama Trio Earns Academic All-American Honors; Hoffman Named Academic All-American of the Year
A trio of University of Alabama student-athletes were named to the Capital One Academic All-America Women?s At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, which was announced Thursday. In addition, senior gymnast Kayla Hoffman was named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year.

Hoffman and junior golfer Brooke Pancake were named to the first team, while junior tennis player Courtney McLane was named to the second team.

?We?re extremely proud to have all three of our nominees earn a place on the Women?s Academic All-America At-Large Team,? UA Director of Athletics Mal Moore said. ?Kayla, Brooke and Courtney are perfect examples of what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication and drive.?

Alabama is the only school in the nation to have two student-athletes on the 15-member first team and three on the overall list. The Capital One Academic All-America Women?s At-Large Team includes student-athletes from 13 sports ? bowling, rowing, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.

?The fact that Alabama was the only school in the nation to put two women on the first team and that Kayla was named the Academic All-American of the Year is a testament to the importance our coaches and student-athletes place on academics and the support system and resources that Jon Dever and the staff of the Bill Battle Academic Center put at their disposal,? Moore said.

Hoffman is the third Crimson Tide athlete to be named Academic All-American of the Year, joining quarterback Greg McElroy, who earned the honor in the fall, and gymnast Stephanie Kite, who became the first UA athlete to earn the accolade in 2004.

Hoffman, captain of Alabama?s 2011 NCAA, NCAA Regional and Southeastern Conference Championship teams and a five-time All-American, carries a 4.0 grade point average in human development and family studies. A native of Union, N.J., she is the 2011 Honda Award winner, which denotes the national collegiate gymnast of the year. Hoffman is the 2011 SEC and NCAA Central Region Gymnast of the Year and the SEC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She has also earned both SEC and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

?Kayla continues to reap the rewards of an incredible career,? UA gymnastics coach Sarah Patterson said. ?To earn a place on the Academic All-America At-Large Team is such a wonderful honor in itself, but to be named the Academic All-American of the Year is a truly awesome recognition of the all-around excellence that Kayla brought to every aspect of her collegiate career.?

A two-time All-American, Pancake, who helped lead Alabama to another top-eight finish at this year?s NCAA Championship, earned the 2010 NCAA Elite 88 Award, given annually to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at each NCAA Championship. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native is a two-time SEC Women?s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a three-time All-SEC golfer. She carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in marketing.

?Brooke?s selection as a first-team Academic All-American is indeed an honor for her, and for our golf program,? UA women?s golf coach Mic Potter said. ?I can?t say enough about Brooke?s dedication to excellence in both her academic life, and her sport of golf.?

McLane, the SEC Women?s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, earned her undergraduate degree in management in three years while boasting a 4.0 GPA. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native was twice, named to the All-SEC Second Team. She and doubles partner, Alexa Guarachi advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championships for the second consecutive season last month.

?Courtney has proven excellence in the academic arena,? UA women?s tennis coach Jenny Mainz said. ?She is the consummate student-athlete and continues to strive for greatness as she graduated in three years with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.?

To this point in the 2010-11 academic year, 16 Alabama student-athletes have earned a place on Academic All-District IV teams. Seven of those, Hoffman, Pancake, McElroy, McLane, softball player Kayla Braud, swimmer Kyle Weeks and football player Barrett Jones, have earned Academic All-American honors. With one Academic All-America team left to be announced, track and field which will be announced next week, the Tide?s total already matches the school record set last year.

Disguised Limits - Capital Ideas

It has been said that the number one reason for business failure is under-capitalization. Yet stories abound of legendary business successes that lacked adequate resources in their formative stages. Conversely, well capitalized businesses often fail miserably. What ultimately proves to be the key reason for the success of most businesses is passionate entrepreneurial leadership and visionary strategic planning.

Yet when it comes to business success, money certainly matters. However, in many cases it isn't how much cash you have access to that determines viable cash flow. More importantly, spending the cash that you have efficiently has the greater impact on long-term business success or failure. The greatest source of future revenue and profits for your business will be determined by the purchasing and cost decisions you make today.

In fact, many well capitalized businesses tend to purchase things outright with their cash rather than pursue other more optimal ways of acquiring the things they need. Some well capitalized businesses often tend to try to find a reason to buy everything; instead of finding a way to avoid buying anything. In many instances, having the money to buy something often creates the false perception that the company can "afford" acquisitions that are often ill-advised or more appropriate at a later date. Should the business ultimately fail, they are then stuck with a lot of illiquid assets on their balance sheet and defaulted loans or angry investors.

It is important that you look at each cost and purchase decision you make as a link in your "value-chain". In other words, does the associated cost and terms of making this acquisition add long term value to my business? Does making this expenditure enable me to offer a higher quality product or service to my customer? Making purchasing and cost decisions in this way also puts you in the habit of thinking about your business strategically at all times.

Making good purchase decisions doesn't always mean getting the lowest price. Spending a few dollars more for a higher quality product or with a better established supplier can often lead to more satisfied customers, quicker delivery times and even gaining referral business from the supplier. Also, it may be possible through negotiation to convert a prospective vendor into a business partner instead. Sometimes this can be done without having to pay anything.

For instance, it may be worth more to the local sandwich shop to cater your round table meeting of local Executives for free or reduced costs in order to market their business to the purchasing managers and decision-makers attending the conference. You should always be looking to cut deals that benefit your bottom line, rather than being a free spender of your company's scarce resources. Other ways to cut costs may be to share office space with strategic companies, bartering your goods and services in exchange for the things you need and buying used office equipment and furniture rather than buying these things new.

It may not always be easy to weigh every factor of each individual purchase. However, failing to examine the key factors of buying may prove to be disastrous. As the fictional character Gordon Gekko stated in "Wall Street", the classic Hollywood film "A fool and his money are lucky enough to get together in the first place." As difficult as it is to find the money to start and grow a successful business, surely the last thing you want to do is make the avoidable cost and purchasing decisions that often lead to ultimate business failure.

Futurity.org ? Survivors can't clear away cancer fog

Cancer survivors often slip through the cracks in healthcare as far as getting treatment for chronic pain and other symptoms long after their treatment has ended. (Credit: iStockphoto)

NORTHWESTERN (US) ? Better follow-up programs are needed for cancer survivors, who often suffer mild to severe pain, fatigue, and memory loss as long as five years after treatment has ended.

?We were surprised to see how prevalent these symptoms still are,? says Lynne Wagner, associate professor of medical social sciences at Northwestern University. ?This is one of the first looks at what?s really happening for survivors in terms of symptoms and treatment among community-based treatment settings across the U.S.?

The persistent pain in survivors who are cancer-free and no longer receiving any treatment is particularly puzzling because good treatment exists.

?It seems we haven?t come a long way in managing pain despite a lot of medical advances,? Wagner says. ?This is eye opening. It tells us we need to be better in clinical practice about managing our survivors? pain.?

Cancer survivors seem to slip through the cracks in healthcare in terms of getting treatment for their pain and other symptoms.

?We don?t have a great system to provide care to cancer survivors,? Wagner says. ?Cancer survivors are left trying to put the pieces together to find optimal care. They ideally need to see someone who is knowledgeable about the long-term affects of treatment.?

The study, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting, included 248 survivors of breast, colorectal, lung and prostate cancer. The survivors were primarily female and white, most were more than five years post-diagnosis and had been treated in community settings?where 80 percent of people with cancer are treated in the United States?rather than academic medical centers.

The most common symptoms reported by survivors were fatigue (16 percent), disturbed sleep (15 percent), cognitive difficulties (13 percent) and pain (13 percent.)

Survivors need education programs for transitioning from treatment to life as a cancer survivor, and this education should include skills for managing these difficult and chronic symptoms, Wagner says. Medical providers also need to be educated about survivors? lingering symptoms.

?It is acceptable for someone actively going through cancer treatment to have pain medications, but when they transition to being survivors, that acceptance goes away,? Wagner says. ?If they ask for pain medication again, doctors may worry that they are getting addicted.?

A better ways to address problems is necessary, especially sleep issues, fatigue, and lasting difficulties with memory and concentration.? Non-drug interventions for improving sleep are effective and should be tailored specifically for cancer survivors.

Exercise is the most effective weapon against cancer-related fatigue, but it?s challenging to adhere to an exercise regime when you don?t feel well. ?We need to see how we can be more effective in promoting physical activity among survivors,? Wagner says.

The study documented treatment interventions for participants? symptoms and then repeated an assessment of the symptoms four weeks later. ?We generally found the same severity of these symptoms one month later, suggesting they tend to be chronic.?

The study was funded by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, which is funded primarily by the National Institute of Cancer.

siesserugod - Johnny Weir's Ice Capades

VANCOUVER, British Columbia? As fashion week moves into the spotlight in New York, the most flamboyant designs may be on the ice in Canada.

Next week, American figure skater and provocateur Johnny Weir will unveil a sparkly one-piece of his own design in Olympic competition. It's not often that a skating wardrobe change makes headlines, but that's what happened after Mr. Weir received threats for wearing white fox fur on his costume at last month's U.S. championships. (He has since switched costumes.)

Glitter on Ice

A look at some of Johnny Weir's skating outfits.

It's all part of the package with Mr. Weir, who has made a name for himself as much for his off-ice drama?like wearing a Soviet team jacket to warm up at the 2006 Olympics?as for his skating. Mr. Weir, a contender to win a medal at his second Games, has shaken up the business of men's skating by blending it with high fashion and over-the-top personality. While other American male skaters have most commonly made post-Olympics names for themselves as coaches, TV commentators or professional stars in traveling skating tours, Mr. Weir has taken the unusual step of foraying into fashion during his competitive career.

He has walked (and skated) the runway at New York Fashion Week and this year started his own Be Unique label with a line of $95 black jackets. After appearing in a documentary called "Pop Star on Ice," he is now the star of the Sundance Channel's reality show "Be Good Johnny Weir," which shows him practicing for many hours as well as shopping with his best friend Paris. In a promo for the show, Mr. Weir participates in a photo shoot in which he, wearing nothing but women's high heels, gloves and gem-studded leggings, emerges from a giant gold Faberg? egg.

Figure skater Johnny Weir chats with WSJ's Geoffrey Fowler about the weirdest thing a fan has ever thrown him on the ice and what's on his iPod.

Watch Weir Skate

Watch Johnny Weir skate to Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" at New York Fashion Week in Feb. 2009, along with an interview with Lifeskate.com's editor Susan Chun on his fashion ambitions.

Mr. Weir, who has worked on costumes with the same seamstress since he was 13, calls one of his outfits "a Care Bear on acid. " He attributes his fifth-place performance at the 2006 Games to not feeling his "aura." Despite the negative attention for his fox fur choice, he doesn't apologize for loving fur. ("Pop Star on Ice" showed him moving numerous boxes of furs to a new apartment.) He even skates differently, spinning and jumping clockwise, unlike most of his counter-clockwise competitors. He spends lots of time with his fans, and enjoys particularly large followings in Japan, South Korea and Russia.

"Johnny Weir is the kind of creative talent that is pretty addictive for our viewers," says Sarah Barnett, the general manager of the Sundance Channel, which is owned by a unit of Cablevision Systems. "He is not afraid to show everything."

Headlines and fan loyalty haven't yet won Mr. Weir top-shelf sponsorships. His rival and fellow U.S. team member Evan Lysacek, the 2009 world champion who focuses on the sport's athletic jumps and spins, is backed by Coca-Cola and AT&T. Mr. Weir?whose performance since the 2006 games has sometimes disappointed?only gets money from his ice rink and skate manufacturer, as well as exhibitions and lectures. (He is in talks with "a very big furrier" but is nervous about moving forward "for obvious reasons," says his agent, Tara Modlin.) Skating has never lacked for male peacocks. But Mr. Weir's particularly public persona creates discomfiture at a moment when figure skating has been struggling to reassert itself as a legitimate sport in the aftermath of a 2002 judging scandal.

"Figure skating, with its roots in amateur sports, has created champions with an image of innocence and wholesomeness. Gender role ambiguity has been tolerated, but not promoted," says Susan Chun, the editor of the skating blog Lifeskate.com. While Mr. Weir has in the past said he didn't get sufficient support from U.S. Figure Skating officials, Ms. Modlin is quick to say that the organization's new president, Patricia St. Peter, is a fan of Mr. Weir's. Officials at U.S. Figure Skating didn't respond to a request for comment.

Nearing the end of his competitive skating career, Mr. Weir hopes there's a different sort of brand in his future. One of his favorite performers is Lady Gaga, the pop singer who has pushed cultural boundaries with out-of-this-world fashion but managed to sell her music to the mainstream. Mr. Weir, who performs to Lady Gaga's hit "Poker Face" at exhibitions, recently attended her concert at Radio City Music Hall and sat next to the singer's mother, who is a skating fan.

"When Gaga started, there were people who worried about her as well. But look at some of the brands associated with her now," like Polaroid, says Mark Zablow, the director of marketing for Platinum Rye Entertainment, a talent firm that is managing the careers of some 30 Olympic athletes. "Yes, your Cokes and Visa may stay away from Johnny. But if he wins, he could open the door for figure skating to a whole new category of brands."

Raised in Quarryville, Pa.?Amish country?Mr. Weir started figure skating relatively late in life, when he was 12, after watching Oksana Baiul win gold at the 1994 Olympics. His mother works for the U.S. Census Bureau, and his father is on disability. Mr. Weir won the world junior championship in 2001 and the adult U.S. championships three times in a row between 2004 and 2006. But since the 2006 Olympics, his performance at competitions has been uneven. In 2007 he switched from his long-time coach Priscilla Hill to Galina Zmievskaya, who had previously coached his idol, Ms. Baiul.

[weir2] Sundance Channel

Mr. Weir's interest in fashion predates his interest in skating. His mother, Patti Weir, says she remembers him demanding to pick his own clothes?a brightly colored high turtleneck?and doing his own hair at school for the annual photo day in fourth grade. "I would trust him to tell me what to buy," she says.

His future likely lies in fashion, says Ms. Modlin and other people who work with him. He has turned the guest room of his apartment into a walk-in-closet with two floor-to-ceiling "trees" with hooks. One is for his furs, and the other is for his Balenciaga. He has dozens of Balenciaga bags, almost all of which have been given to him by fans.

In his online journal last summer, Mr. Weir wrote about how he'd rather daydream about fashion than listen to lectures from U.S. Figure Skating, which runs a program for top athletes in Colorado Springs called "Champs Camp." "I have a hard time sitting through lectures while I'm doodling costumes in my binder or considering the autumn colors for the Balenciaga collection," he wrote. Mr. Weir says he has befriended designers like Richie Rich (a former figure skater), and wants to attend New York's Fashion Institute of Technology.

Stephanie Handler, a seamstress who has worked with Mr. Weir on his costumes since he was "a 13-year-old piece of spaghetti," says that he has an aesthetic that's all his own. They create his costumes together, starting with Mr. Weir's drawings and then translating them into fabrics. Last fall, she recalls gathering at her studio to choose a shade of pink used for lacing on his costume for the Olympic short program. "He was particular about it not being sissy pink or bubblegum pink. It had to be fuchsia electric?not quite day-glow pink," she says.

She calls Mr. Weir a fashion pioneer in skating. "Everyone is blurring the lines a lot more because of Johnny's influence. Remember back when skating was all pants and shirts? Now there are a lot more little onesies out there among the guys. There is a whole lot more expression going on than in Dick Button's time," she says, adding that already some female skaters have asked to buy Mr. Weir's costumes to turn them into dresses.

While he attracts detractors from the traditional figure skating world, Mr. Weir was also criticized by Mark Lund, the gay former editor of International Figure Skating magazine, for not more directly addressing whether he is gay. In interviews, Mr. Weir celebrates the fact that he is effeminate and likes "sparkly things" but deflects questions about his sexuality, saying he doesn't want to be put in a box.

Mr. Weir uses his TV show to respond to these pressures. In one episode he says that he takes "the best of masculinity and femininity and put it together in some kind of Johnny Weir mixture."

China's Rise: A Quest To 'Hug The World'?

Chinese explorer Zheng He sailed on diplomatic and business missions in the early 1400s, reaching as far as northeast Africa. This sculpture of Zheng He is on display in the Asian Reading Room at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

This month, NPR is examining the many ways China is expanding its reach in the world ? through investments, infrastructure, military power and more.

In Nanjing, where Zheng He set out on his voyages, workers are building replicas of his massive boats.

When the United States took over from Britain as the predominant world power 100 years ago, the transition was like one between brothers ? or cousins, at least. And the two countries remain close allies to this day. The rise of China in relation to U.S. predominance presents a somewhat different challenge ? with decades of sometimes outright hostility and an ongoing fractious relationship.

As it reemerges as a world power, the question is: Is China's awakening to be welcomed ? or feared?

Some look to the past for clues ? all the way back to the 15th century.

'We Want To Rise Peacefully'

In a huge hangar in the Chinese city of Nanjing, 170 miles inland from Shanghai, a workman is hacking away at a tree trunk that has been transported here from the forests of Indonesia. Behind him rises the skeleton of a massive wooden ship, 200 feet long and 70 feet wide.

This is the reconstruction of the flagship of a large Chinese fleet that sailed out in the early 15th century to explore and trade with peoples around the Indian Ocean ? nearly 100 years before Christopher Columbus' three little boats set out for America.

Tiny splinters fly as the workman planes the wood smooth. The treasure ship, as all the boats of China's first blue-water navy were known, was commanded by a eunuch admiral named Zheng He. His voyages pose one of the great "What ifs?" of world history: Rather than just trading in Southeast Asia, India and as far as the east coast of Africa, what if Zheng He had colonized like the Europeans were about to?

The man leading the shipbuilding project is a bluff Communist Party official named Zhao Zhigang. Zhao says the peaceful nature of Zheng He's voyages show that, in stark contrast to the West's rise, China is not an expansionist culture.

"Chinese people are very moderate; we are not a missionary culture," Zhao says. "Our navy is growing now, it's true, but we want to rise peacefully. We want to get to Western standards of living, but to do it all peacefully."

Changing Motivations

Western historians say Chinese dynasties do have a tradition of expanding their continental borders ? Tibet and the Muslim northwest being examples ? but that there's no doubt Zheng He's voyages show a less missionary and less expansionist side to Chinese culture.

William Kirby, a professor of Chinese history at Harvard University, however, says when you fast forward 600 years to today, modern China's motivations may be more like those of Western countries.

Maps of Zheng He's voyages are documented in the Encyclopedia of Military Science, which is on file at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Reference librarian Ming Sun Poon says the maps, which were originally drawn on a single scroll, were sectioned off and transferred to wood block prints and later bound in a codex.

"It is not one of conquest, it is exploration and contact," he says. "But in no case does it result in a conquest. Whereas it does appear Zheng He's voyages were motivated by desires different from those of Columbus or Magellan or great Western explorers. Today China's role in Africa seems to me to be very similar to that of other countries. I see China following, for better, and possibly for worse, an American model of needing to secure energy sources and seeking to do so in a great variety of ways, wherever the energy can be found."

The Chinese search for natural resources comes in the context of its growing military. But many Chinese people point out that it was the West that semi-colonized China in the 19th century, not the other way around, and they stress that China's peaceful culture has not changed since Admiral Zheng He's time.

Aware of its need to project its soft power, the Chinese government has put out advertisements and expanded a whole department of the Chinese Ministry of Education to recruit teachers and send them out to foreign countries around the world, promoting the teaching of Mandarin. Xiang Huanxin, 24, went to Thailand to teach and like many young Chinese, she believes China will never threaten anyone.

"China's rise is very different from Westerners' rise 100 years ago," she says. "For a country, if you want to rise, you can't force people to accept you. If people love you, they will accept you. That's what Chinese people think."

Xiang says Chinese young people want what Western young people want ? to get out and see the world.

"First, we just want to bring our culture outside for people who are really interested in it, and we feel so proud that foreigners like Chinese culture and like to learn about Chinese language," Xiang says. "We never try to change the world. We just like to hug the world. It's peaceful, don't worry."

The Future Of Expansion

But if Chinese people just want to hug the world, it's clear the world doesn't always want to hug them back.

In Tokyo in May, the visiting Chinese prime minister was met with angry demonstrators, protesting Chinese claims to islands that Japan itself claims in the sea between the two countries. Perhaps not coincidentally, there is believed to be a major natural gas field under the seabed nearby. Many people, like Toshio Tamogami, the former chief of staff of the Japanese air force, are not buying China's claims that its rise will be peaceful.

"I don't believe it. They always say this, but they act in a different way," Tamogami says. "China wants the resources, and it also wants the islands to help clear a way for its blue-water navy to get out to the Pacific Ocean. So of course Japan will never allow China to take the islands."

Perhaps most difficult of all for China is that it is ruled by a Communist Party that continues to lock up activists and dissidents at home and continues to threaten Taiwan, which it claims as its own. A peaceful rise is possible, says David Zweig of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, but it won't be easy.

"They are doing an OK job. The risk, of course, is that they are making world a little nervous and they don't even have to be bad to do that ? just the fact that a country the size of China is rising so fast is very destabilizing for world," Zweig says. "And the world has to come to terms with that. But China has to recognize that their rise is this highly destabilizing force, and so they have to figure out how to work their way into the system without adding to the disruption."

Six hundred years ago, Zheng He's treasure ships went out and came back peacefully, partly because China didn't need anything from outside its own realm. Now it does. How it deals with that search for energy and natural resources could be what decides whether China's rise will in the end be peaceful or not.

Ex-IMF Leader Pleads Not Guilty To Sex Assault

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, third right, exits Manhattan Criminal Court with his wife Anne Sinclair, Monday, June 6, 2011, in New York after arraignment proceedings on charges of sexually assaulting a Manhattan hotel maid.

The former International Monetary Fund head charged with trying to rape a Manhattan hotel maid formally said he was innocent of the charges Monday in his first court appearance in the case in two weeks.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn pleaded not guilty in a strong voice at the brief proceeding, standing between his defense team as his wife, journalist Anne Sinclair, watched.

State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus went through the formality of telling Strauss-Kahn he needed to appear in court and had a right to be present at his trial, to which the economist said "yes."

The French diplomat appeared in court for the first time since he was released on $6 million in cash bail and bond last month. He has been under house arrest that includes 24-hour monitors and armed guards, first in a downtown Manhattan apartment and now in a deluxe, $50,000-a-month Tribeca town house.

By the end of the case, "it will be clear that there was no element of forcible compulsion in this case whatsoever," Strauss-Kahn's attorney Ben Brafman said outside court after the brief hearing. "Any suggestion to the contrary is simply not credible."

Brafman's similar comments at an earlier court hearing have led to speculation that the defense will argue the encounter was consensual. He repeated again Monday that he and co-counsel William Taylor would not be commenting on the specifics of the case.

"We will defend this case in the courtroom," he said, urging there not be a rush to judgment.

But the maid's attorney, Kenneth Thompson, said she would testify in court and condemned speculation that she either made up the attack or exaggerated the claims.

"The victim wants you to know that all of Dominique Strauss-Kahn's power, money and influence throughout the world will not keep the truth about what he did to her in that hotel room from coming out," Thompson said.

The Associated Press generally does not identify accusers in sex crime cases unless they agree to it.

Thompson said the 32-year-old woman has not worked since the encounter because she is traumatized. And she will not settle the case or back down.

"She is standing up for women around the world sexually assaulted who are too afraid to come forward," he said.

The hearing, which lasted about five minutes, was an arraignment, a standard proceeding in U.S. courts where the defendant is formally advised of the charges and is given the chance to plead. The attorneys also briefly discussed the handing over of potential evidence in the case. Strauss-Kahn's next court date was set for July 18.

Protesters gathered outside to jeer Strauss-Kahn, who resigned from his powerful post amid the scandal, and proclaimed his innocence in a letter to staff. About 50 hotel workers were bused in by their union gathered outside the courthouse, many wearing their work uniforms. They shouted "shame on you" as Strauss-Kahn arrived, and again as he left in a black sport-utility vehicle.

The accuser "is a hard-working woman who was just doing her job," said Wendy Baranello, a hotel union organizer. "It's outrageous."

The case has been intensely followed around the world, spawning news reports even about food deliveries to the home where Strauss-Kahn is staying. His arrest rocked France, where he had been considered a potential contender in next year's presidential elections, and shook up the IMF. The powerful lending organization has yet to name his replacement.

Strauss-Kahn was arraigned on charges of attempted rape, sex abuse, a criminal sex act, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching. The most serious charge carries a maximum term of five to 25 years in prison.

Strauss Kahn had been staying at the Sofitel, near Times Square in Manhattan, in a $3,000-a-night suite. He was scheduled to check out the day of the encounter.

The maid, a West African widow and mother of a 15-year-old girl, told police Strauss-Kahn chased her down a hallway in his Sofitel hotel suite May 14, tried to pull down her pantyhose and forced her to perform oral sex.

Prosecutors said last month that evidence against Strauss-Kahn was building by the day. Tests have found Strauss-Kahn's DNA matched material on the woman's uniform shirt, people familiar with the investigation told the AP.

But Brafman told a judge May 16 that the defense believed any forensic evidence "will not be consistent with a forcible encounter."

And in a letter to prosecutors last month, Brafman and fellow Strauss-Kahn lawyer William W. Taylor said they had ? but wouldn't yet release ? information that "would seriously undermine the quality of this prosecution and also gravely undermine the credibility of the complainant in this case."

The woman's attorneys said outside court that an attempt to smear her name would not be tolerated.

Buy Art Reproductions ? What To Look For? | Free Article Directory ...

This article has been viewed 11 times.

When it comes to having a good art collection, a lot of people are not sure what they should get when they are looking for pieces for their home. Still, a lot of people would love to collect art that is not going to cost them a fortune to be able to get a hold of and they need to know how they can make this happen. For those who do not realize it, art reproductions are a fantastic way to be able to save money and get exactly what you want for your home or office. This is a really great way to build up a fantastic collection you can get a lot good out of collecting this way and really own the works you feel most passionate about which is the key. You will want to make sure that you are getting quality reproductions, of course, but this is much easier to learn how to do than you might think once you discover the differences out there. The main thing is that you want to have your works on canvas because this is the best way to make sure that they will be well preserved over the long haul.

By getting great reproductions, you can build a very serious collection of art that a lot of people would be envious of and the best part is, the cost is very reasonable. Be sure you are going through good sources that are able to give you better works than mere posters printed up on glossy sheets of paper that are, in the end, not worth much because they look nothing at all like the actual paintings they are supposed to be copies of. The fact is, canvas is the only way to get the right look that people love because it looks like what you would see if you went to a museum. We want to be able to hang works of art that look just like they would if we traveled thousands of miles to be able to see them. After all, works of art are objects of beauty that are meant to inspire us and really make us feel connected to the world that we live in.

So yes, you really can build a magnificent art collection when you take the time to get an incredible work that is going to give you full value for a whole lot less than you might have expected to pay. A lot of times, people are shocked by what a great collection they can build for a relatively small amount of cash. If you want amazing pieces of art, all you really have to do is collect what you find to be the most beautiful.

I hope you find this article interesting. Consider a museum quality art reproductions for your next home decoration project. Our studio specialized in fine art reproductions of museum masterpieces.

New Oxford Dictionaries Online Entries Will Have Techies Abuzz

Twitter isn't just a social network, it's now part of the electronic lexicon.

Oxford Dictionaries Online has added Twittersphere to its listing of words, along with technology oriented acronyms like ZOMG and NSFW.

Nearly half of the 35 new entries have their origins in technology and the online world.

Twittersphere is defined by the electronic dictionary as "postings made on the social networking site Twitter, considered collectively." ZOMG is a play on the words "oh my God" and refers to a sarcastic comment on an inexperienced or overenthusiastic poster. It is used especially on electronic message boards. NSFW, the common email parlance for "Not Safe For Work," has also been made official.

Some other recent additions techies will be familiar with: badware, breadcrumb trail, infographic, network neutrality, paperless, permalink, and Cyber Monday, which seems a bit of a late addition since the marketing term for the Monday after Thanksgiving on which shoppers snap up deals online has been used for several years now.

There is at least one new entry that may not be familiar to most Americans, but perhaps it will be to people overseas. The word is lappy, which is slang for laptop.

A mind-numbing string of some of the new entries all together might look something like this _ use the permalink to put the video of that cool lifehack you heard about in the Twittersphere on my lappy. Careful though, it's totally NSFW.

By the way, Oxford Dictionaries Online isn't exactly the same as the longstanding Oxford American Dictionary, which explains the presence of the abbreviation BTW. An explanation of the difference can be found here.
