The morning after: PlayStation Vita sales go cold during first full week in Japan

It's hard to set much store by early sales performance, particularly after the evergreen 3DS faced such a rocky road. Nevertheless, the Vita's latest stats do look disappointing for such a highly anticipated -- not to mention high-quality -- console: after shifting a remarkable 321,000 units during its first two days on sale in Japan, it could only muster 72,500 in the whole week between December 19th and Christmas Day. In comparison, the PS3 sold 76,000 units during the same period, while the 3DS rang up half a million. This doesn't necessarily reflect a lack of interest, however: there have been stock shortages, and it's also possible that buyers are waiting to make sure that all the launch bugs get cleaned up. As for us, our alarms remain firmly set for February 22nd.

In the Year 9595

Image: Illustration by Daniel Hertzberg

Watson is the IBM computer built by David Ferrucci and his team of 25 research scientists tasked with designing an artificial-intelligence (AI) system that can rival human champions at the game of Jeopardy. After beating the greatest Jeopardy champions, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, in February 2011, the computer is now being employed in more practical tasks such as answering diagnostic medical questions.

I have a question: Does Watson know that it won Jeopardy? Did it think, ?Oh, yeah! I beat the great Ken Jen!?? In other words, did Watson feel flushed with pride after its victory? This has been my standard response when someone asks me about the great human-versus-machine Jeopardy shoot-out; people always respond in the negative, understanding that such self-awareness is not yet the province of computers. So I put the line of inquiry to none other than Ferrucci at a recent conference. His answer surprised me: ?Yes, Watson knows it won Jeopardy.? I was skeptical: How can that be, since such self-awareness is not yet possible in computers? ?Because I told it that it won,? he replied with a wry smile.

Of course. You could even program Watson to vocalize a Howard Dean?like victory scream, but that is still a far cry from its feeling triumphant. That level of self-awareness in computers, and the time when it might be achieved, was a common theme at the Singularity Summit held in New York City on the weekend of October 15?16, 2011. There hundreds of singularitarians gathered to be apprised of our progress toward the date of 2045, set by visionary computer scientist Ray Kurzweil as being when computer intelligence will exceed that of all humanity by one billion times, humans will realize immortality, and technological change will be so rapid and profound that we will witness an intellectual event horizon beyond which, like its astronomical black hole namesake, life is not the same.

I was at once both inspired and skeptical. When asked my position on immortality, for example, I replied, ?I?m for it!? But wishing for eternal life?and being offered unprovable ways of achieving it?has been a theme for billions of people throughout history. My baloney-detection alarm goes off whenever a soothsayer writes himself and his generation into the forecast, proclaiming that the Biggest Thing to Happen to Humanity Ever will occur in the prophet?s own lifetime. I abide by the Copernican principle that we are not special. For once, I would like to hear a futurist or religious diviner predict that ?it? is going to happen in, say, the year 2525 or 7510. But where?s the hope in that? Herein lies the appeal of Kurzweil and his band of singularity hopefuls. No matter how distressing it may be when the bad news daily assaults our senses, our eyes should be on the prize just over the horizon. Be patient.

Patience is what we are going to need because, in my opinion, we are centuries away from AI matching human intelligence. As California Institute of Technology neuroscientist Christof Koch noted in narrating the wiring diagram of the entire nervous system of Caenorhabditis elegans, we are clueless in understanding how this simple roundworm ?thinks,? much less in explicating (and reproducing in a computer) a human mind billions of times more complex. We don?t even know how our brain produces conscious thoughts or where the ?self? is located (if it can be found anywhere at all), much less how to program a machine to do the same. Pop rock duo Zager and Evans were probably closer in their 1969 hit song In the Year 2525?s prediction that the biggest milestones would happen between the years 2525 and 9595, their exordium and terminus.

An irony: amid all this highfalutin braggadocio of how close we are to computers taking over the world and emulating human thought, I had to give my talk on the ?social singularity? (progress in political, economic and social systems over the past 10,000 years) early because Rice University computer scientist James McLurkin could not get his small swarm of robots to work. Either someone?s wireless mic or the room?s wireless network was interfering with the tiny robots? communications system, and no one could figure out how to solve the problem. My prediction for the Singularity: we are 10 years away ... and always will be.

Did Cheetah from 1930s Tarzan flicks die? (omg!)

FILE - A file photo shows Johnny Weissmuller, right, as Tarzan, Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane, and Cheetah the chimpanzee, in a scene from the 1932 movie Tarzan the Ape Man. A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah the chimpanzee from the Tarzan movies of the 1930s died Cheetah died on Dec. 24 of kidney failure at age 80. (AP Photo/ho, File)

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) ? A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah, the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s, has died at 80. But other accounts call that claim into question.

Debbie Cobb, outreach director at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, said Wednesday that her grandparents acquired Cheetah around 1960 from "Tarzan" star Johnny Weissmuller and that the chimp appeared in Tarzan films between 1932 and 1934. During that period, Weissmuller made "Tarzan the Ape Man" and "Tarzan and His Mate."

But Cobb offered no documentation, saying it was destroyed in a 1995 fire.

Also, some Hollywood accounts indicate a chimpanzee by the name of Jiggs or Mr. Jiggs played Cheetah alongside Weissmuller early on and died in 1938.

In addition, an 80-year-old chimpanzee would be extraordinarily old, perhaps the oldest ever known. According to many experts and Save the Chimps, another Florida sanctuary, chimpanzees in captivity generally live to between 40 and 60, though Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, Fla., says it has one that is around 73.

A similar claim about another chimpanzee that supposedly played second banana to Weissmuller was debunked in 2008 in a Washington Post story.

Writer R.D. Rosen discovered that the primate, which lived in Palm Springs, Calif., was born around 1960, meaning it wasn't oldest enough to have been in the Tarzan movies of Hollywood's Golden Age that starred Olympic swimming star Weissmuller as the vine-swinging, loincloth-wearing Ape Man and Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane.

While a number of chimpanzees played the sidekick role in the Tarzan movies of the 1930s and '40s, Rosen said in an email Wednesday that this latest purported Cheetah looks like a "business-boosting impostor as well."

"I'm afraid any chimp who actually shared a soundstage with Weissmuller and O'Sullivan is long gone," Rosen said.

Cobb said Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure and was cremated.

"Unfortunately, there was a fire in '95 in which a lot of that documentation burned up," Cobb said. "I'm 51 and I've known him for 51 years. My first remembrance of him coming here was when I was actually 5, and I've known him since then, and he was a full-grown chimp then."

Film historian and Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osbourne said the Cheetah character "was one of the things people loved about the Tarzan movies because he made people laugh. He was always a regular fun part of the movies."

In his time, the Cheetah character was as popular as Rin Tin Tin or Asta, the dog from the "Thin Man" movies, Osbourne said.

"He was a major star," he said.

At the animal sanctuary, Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh, Cobb said. But he could also be ill-tempered. Cobb said that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would fling feces and other objects.

Puerto Rico Referendum Approved To Decide Political Status

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Puerto Rico's governor approved a two-part referendum on Wednesday to help decide the island's political status, but supporters of remaining a U.S. commonwealth criticized the decision to hold both votes on the same day as unfair.

The first part of the referendum will ask voters if they want a change in status or prefer to remain a U.S. commonwealth. The second part will ask that voters choose from three options: statehood, independence or sovereign free association.

The original proposal was to hold the first part of the referendum in August 2012 and then, only if the majority sought a change in status, hold the second part during the November 2012 general elections.

But under the new proposal, the both parts will be held on Nov. 6, said Gov. Luis Fortuno, who leads the pro-statehood New Progressive Party.

Regardless of what voters decide, any change requires approval by the U.S. Congress and president.

Sen. Eduardo Bhatia said holding both parts of the referendum on the same day makes no sense because it assumes that the pro-status quo option doesn't win and the second round will be necessary.

"This law is proof that the leadership of the pro-statehood movement turns to trickery, deceit and the technique of confusion as political weapons," said Bhatia of the Popular Democratic Party, which supports the current commonwealth status. "What opportunity do voters have to seriously reflect between one vote and the other? None."

The questions will be on the same ballot, and critics fear that being forced to choose from the three options could influence how people vote in the first part.

Kenneth McClintock, secretary of state for Puerto Rico, denied accusations that pro-status quo supporters would be ignored, saying that people were free to leave the second part of the ballot blank. He said Bhatia's party had previously agreed to holding the referendum in one day.

McClintock said the U.S. Congress would interpret the results if the majority chose something other than maintaining the status quo.

Fortuno also discarded criticism of the referendum.

"All processes aimed at resolving Puerto Rico's political future assumes that the current situation no longer has majority support," he said.

Fortuno spokeswoman Ana del Valle said his administration chose to hold the two-part referendum on the same day to get a sense of what people prefer for the island's political future.

The referendum received praise from Luis Delgado, leader of a group that is pushing for Puerto Rico to have a sovereign free association with the U.S. But Delgado urged Fortuno to demand that the U.S. outline terms and conditions for each of the choices before the referendum is held.

Puerto Rico has long debated its political status, with no majority for any particular status emerging in referendums held in 1967, 1993 and 1998.

Rafael Cox Alomar, a PDP member who is seeking the island's nonvoting Congressional seat, dismissed the referendum as expensive and unnecessary.

"This referendum does not work and does not involve nor compromise in any way the U.S. Congress," he said. "In a moment of economic crisis... the cost of this referendum is an insult to the people who reject it."

Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who is running against Fortuno, said the Popular Democratic Party would soon issue its official stance on the referendum.

Critics also noted that if Fortuno's party loses the election, millions of dollars spent on the referendum will have gone to waste.

Japan sales tax hike debate to continue on Thursday

TOKYO | Wed Dec 28, 2011 4:37am EST

TOKYO Dec 28 (Reuters) - Japanese ruling party lawmakers will continue to debate a possible increase in the 5 percent sales tax on Thursday but it is unclear if a conclusion can be reached, a senior party official said.

Hirohisa Fujii, the head of the Democratic Party's tax panel, also told reporters he was not sure if Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda would attend the meeting.

A marathon session to discuss the sales tax ended in a stalemate on Wednesday as lawmakers failed to agree on the timing of sales tax hikes need to pay for welfare spending.

GadgetTrak launches CameraTrace: Photo thieves beware (Digital Trends)

camertracerYou may remember hearing about photographer John Heller?s ordeal recovering his $9,000 worth of camera gear this summer. The thieves unwittingly uploaded photos taken with the stolen equipment, including a Nikon D3, to sites popular photo sharing platforms?which is just what GadgetTrak wanted.

The site was then testing a beta application that would scan photo-sharing sites like Flickr and 500px for images uploaded from potentially stolen equipment. The meta-data on these images reveals camera serial numbers, so owners missing their gear can easily identify if it?s theirs or not.

It was a dream come true for Heller, and now GadgetTrak is releasing the technology to consumers. Called CameraTrace, the service basically creates an identity for your camera so that in the cause it?s taken it can easily search the worldwide Web for any image taken with the device. Users pay a one-time $10 fee per camera, which comes with a lost-and-found tag that good Samaritans can use to trace back to owners who have merely misplaced their cameras.

In the case your device has been stolen, however, you will use the system to file a police report. GadgetTrak will even take up your case and speak with local enforcement if you choose. Basically you?ll have a helping hand through the painstaking process of getting your equipment back.

According to GadgetTrak, the CPUsage platform behind CameraTrace is able to thoroughly asses where your device has gone via uploaded images. It?s also allegedly able to identify more than 300 different ?high-end camera models? from various brand names.

Serious photographers will get an added benefit from using CameraTrace. The site also protects your copyrighted photos via its image monitoring service, which scans social sites to see if anyone out there is using your work without permissions?and pointing you in their direction.

Compared to how much photographers are willing to shell out on their gear, $10 is chump change. And given the popularity of the photo-sharing sites, this could be a very effective form of insurance.?

Apple iPod Earphones

Product Type: Apple headphones

Newest Review:?... more from these. @ Sound @ The sound quality isn't that good, bass is flat and acoustics sound very wobbly and lifeless. They are somew... more

@ About @

These headphones are pretty standard for your iPod iPad or iPhone, and really, their sound quality is pretty standard too. These have a ton of faults that just don't show good build quality, or thought about manufacturing.

I bought these headphones when I bought my iPod, and within a year, they went in the bin. The wire was flimsy, I was sick of the sound and build quality and since they were close to breaking, they weren't even worth selling used. I would have expected much more from these.

@ Sound @

The sound quality isn't that good, bass is flat and acoustics sound very wobbly and lifeless. They are somewhat loud but when you turn the volume up the sound quality goes down, and vocals sound distorted. Ozzy Osborne through these sounds like he has a sore throat or about to loose his voice.

The bass guitars aren't as vibrant as they are when listening through anything else, they just don't have a good kick to them and this is quite disappointing. Listening to other music genres like say, Susan Boyles music makes isn't quite the same quality in these. She sounds the same but her voice isn't as "amazing" as it normally is.

@ Build quality @

I have lost count the number of times these have fallen out of my ears. They don't fit my ears comfortably and feel like I have 2 stones wedged in them.

The wire is easily broken, and when I had finished with these headphones, they stopped working altogether. Towards the end of their life the wire had become considerably loose and had to be held in a certain position before they would let any sound through. I had to tape down the wire to the left hand side of my iPod.

The speaker became visible through a crack on the left after a light knock and soon after, a piece of plastic at the bottom had come off completely.

@ Overall @

If you can try and avoid these headphones then please do, they are cheaply built and cheaply sold, and in my experience, cheap does not always end up being the cheapest long term, as I have since had to buy new ones.

These headphones offer lack of sound quality, poor build quality and they aren't that loud. These are not recommended.

Summary: Not good headphones

Dual-SIM Samsung Galaxy S II launched in China

Samsung has launched a dual-SIM version of its super popular Galaxy S II smartphone in China. Simply called Galaxy S II Duos, it resembles T-Mobile or Sprint?s version of the device, sporting a large 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus WVGA touchscreen. In addition, it also comes with other ?standard Galaxy S II? goodies like a 1.2GHz processor, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, video out, 16GB of built-in memory and a microSD expansion slot.

All said, we?re talking about the best Android smartphone with two SIM card slots released, ever. And we?re hoping Samsung will launch it in other parts of the world too, eventually making some of us just a little bit happier. I personally know at least 10 other people who would buy this device the very minute it?s available?

In related news, the Korean giant also recently unveiled two other dual SIM Android phones ? Galaxy Y Duos and Galaxy Y Pro Duos.

Sony sells its stake in Samsung LCD team-up for $939 million

Sony and Samsung have decided to part ways on their seven-year-old LCD venture. Possibly due to Sony's recent struggles in the increasingly competitive world of TV division, Samsung will buy up its 50 percent share for around $939 million. The Japanese company has agreed to a new strategic agreement to source Sammy's LCDs in the future and, according to Sony, will continue "cooperative engineering efforts focused on LCD panel technology." Its full explanation follows after the break.

World & UK News: Charity hails East Africa appeal

Save the Children said its East Africa emergency appeal has become the most successful in the charity's history after Britons donated more than ?7 million in six months.

The appeal, which was launched in July, has surpassed the previous record of ?6.8 million raised for Asian tsunami victims.

Save the Children's chief executive Justin Forsyth said the money was spent on providing food, clean water and healthcare to 1.7 million children affected by the drought in East Africa.

"Even when times are tough at home, this shows that British people care deeply about the world's most vulnerable children," Mr Forsyth said.

"They know that their help - however small - can be the difference between life and death for children facing unimaginable suffering."

One such child is Umi, a baby girl found by Save the Children outreach staff in a remote village in rural Kenya. Mr Forsyth said Umi had life-threatening malnutrition but made a full recovery after the charity intervened.

But he said the scale of the food crisis was enormous and thousands of other children, particularly in Somalia, urgently needed help.

An estimated 250,000 people are in urgent need of assistance in Somalia, he said, just days after International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell announced Britain was providing more than 9,000 tonnes of food supplies and medicines to drought-ravaged regions in the Horn of Africa.

Mr Mitchell told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that Somalia was a direct threat to the UK's security because it was one of the "most dysfunctional countries in the world". He said aid made "the difference between life and death" as millions across the region "face a fight for life".

The Government will host a conference on Somalia in London on February 23, Prime Minister David Cameron announced last month. Mr Cameron said Somalia was a failed state during a speech at the Lord Mayor's banquet on November 14.
