State to open two shelter sites for pets at 4 p.m. Saturday - Projo 7 to ...

CRANSTON, R.I. -- Starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, the state will open two animal shelters, one at the Boss Arena on the University of Rhode Island campus and the other at Thayer Arena in Warwick, R.I. National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Denis Riel said Friday.

Each location has food and crates for 100 dogs and 100 cats, but more can be sheltered if owners bring their own crates.

Pet owners are advised not to leave animals behind under any circumstances if they are required to evacuate their residence.

Volunteers from the R.I. Disaster Animal Response Team will staff both locations.

Pet owners are asked to use the state shelters only if they cannot be helped by their municipality's emergency shelter or animal shelter. Not all emergency shelters are pet-friendly.

Visit the RIDART site for advice on evacuating and sheltering pets and livestock.
