Many people know that there are a few basic strategies needed to improve health and fitness. These include eating a nutritious diet, getting plenty of rest and regularly engaging in physical activity. However, not all types of exercise are appropriate, particularly if one is elderly, pregnant or disabled. In such circumstances, a more gentle workout will enable one to stay fit without straining one's body. This may be why Colorado yoga classes are so popular among residents throughout the state, no matter their age, background or skill level.

This holistic mind-body regimen originated in the East many centuries ago, but has since taken the Western world by storm. Millions of Americans engage in the relaxing program's deep breathing techniques, poses and stretches, all of which are designed to strengthen the body and soothe the mind.

Individuals who suffer from painful conditions like fibromyalgia have also turned to yoga to alleviate their symptoms and cope with stress.

Psych Central reports that a recent study investigated the effects of yoga on levels of a hormone called cortisol. Previous research has revealed that women who have fibromyalgia tend to have lower-than-normal levels of this compound, which is believed to contribute to the characteristic pain, muscle stiffness, sleep disturbances and gastrointestinal discomfort associated with the disease.

"The secretion of the hormone cortisol is dysregulated in women with fibromylagia," said lead author Kathryn Curtis, quoted by the news source. "Yoga promotes physical relaxation by decreasing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which lowers heart rate and increases breath volume."

She added that study participants exhibited increased mindfulness, in addition to reduced pain and anxiety, after practicing yoga.
