Suspicious item found at Kansas City airport

KANSAS CITY, Mo?? Part of Kansas City International Airport was shut down on Sunday morning as police investigated the discovery of a suspicious item found during screening of carry-on baggage, an airport spokesman said.

Police took someone into custody for questioning after the item was discovered at a Southwest Airlines gate, airport spokesman Joe McBride told Reuters.

An "item or device" was discovered in a bag during X-ray screening at about 9 a.m. local time at Gate 39 at Terminal B, McBride said. The airport has three separate terminals.

Gates 37 through 39 waiting areas were cleared after the incident and the access road to the terminal was shut down as a precaution, McBride said. Southwest and Delta continued to fly out of the terminal this morning, he said.

McBride said he did not know which flight the passenger planned to board as the security checkpoint serves multiple gates.

The incident comes on the 10th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. The airport in Kansas City has "ramped up security" in recent days due to the anniversary, he said. (Editing by James B. Kelleher and David Bailey)
