Revere High School athletic director of athletics Shaun Hart, who is beginning his second year at the helm, reports that between 300-350 athletes will compete for the fall varsity and junior varsity sports teams.
The RHS coed golf team will have the honor of kicking off ? or should we say teeing off ? the season with a match versus Winthrop on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 3:45 p.m. at its home Cedar Glen Golf Course in Saugus.
Matt Nazzaro is the new head coach of the golf team, moving up from his junior varsity post to succeed Ben Murphy as the leader of the program.
The other Revere fall varsity sports head coaches are Lou Cicatelli (football), Julieanne Esposito (cheerleading), Natalie Lyons (girls soccer), Nik Tower (boys soccer), Mike Flynn (boys cross country), Katie Sinnott (girls cross country), Maureen Flynn (field hockey), and Kim Hudd (girls volleyball). All sports, except cheerleading, boys cross country, and girls cross country, will field junior varsity teams.
The Revere boys and girls varsity soccer teams will play their home games on the turf field located behind the high school. The cross country teams will compete on the Belle Isle Marsh course for their home meets.? The volleyball team will host matches at the Roland Merullo Fieldhouse inside the high school. The field hockey team will play its home games on the baseball diamond (Conigliaro Field) located behind the high school.
?Field hockey will play a couple of their games on the turf field as well for the first time,? said Hart.
Coach Cicatelli?s football team opens its season on Friday, Sept. 9 against Medford High at Hormel Stadium. Revere?s first home game at Della Russo Stadium on Park Avenue is Friday Sept. 16 versus Whittier Tech.
Revere will be playing in a brand new division as part of the merger between the Northeastern Conference (NEC) and Cape Ann League (CAL) schools for football. Revere is grouped in the highest division (Division 1) with NEC schools Peabody, Lynn English, and Lynn Classical and Cape Ann League schools North Andover and Masconomet Regional.
North Andover will be a one-and-done football opponent for Revere as the school will be moving to the Merrimack Valley Conference in the fall of 2012. North Andover?s decision doesn?t sit well with Shaun Hart.
?I?m disappointed that North Andover is leaving after the whole commitment by the Cape Ann League to the NEC,? said Hart. ?It just makes me feel like teams from the CAL can come and go as they please, so I?m definitely aggravated by that. It?s certainly going to spur the NEC to firm itself up next year by protecting ourselves rather than everybody else.?
