How to Make Money Online With List Building ? Lessons Learned ...

A lot of people think that since I am well-known for my internet marketing businesses now that I have always known how to make money online. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have been an entrepreneur pretty much my entire life but I started off in a much more traditional way, offline. List building is my specialty, what I am known for, and a lot of what I learned about list building online I actually learned from my offline businesses.

It really isn?t that important what I did offline, but truth be told I sold salsa. I started the business out of my dorm in Vermont but I sold my salsa all over New England. My business wasn?t very profitable even though I made lots of sales. I made the decision to just shut my business down.

After I shut down the business I realized I could have taken a different approach. Because I had a list of very happy customers I could have made money from that list instead of just basically flushing the list away.

Here?s what I could have done. What if I had gone to a competitor and told them I was considering closing up shop. They might not have cared, right? Do you think I might have gotten their attention if I had shown them some facts and figures? What if I had been able to show them I had a list of paying customers, customers who regularly bought my salsa, by the caseload.

Then what if I offered to sell them my business? Not the salsa, not the ingredients, not even the recipe. What is I were to sell them my list of customers, my biggest asset. The one I basically ignored when I just closed the business.

I could have even sweetened the deal by offering to do a letter of introduction, telling my customers that I am shutting down because this company has a better product.

I think that would have really gotten their attention!

At that point I could have negotiated selling this asset for a flat fee, but being a smart business guy and knowing my business and my customers, I would rather come from a different angle. What if I had offered to give them the asset in exchange for a percentage of the profit they earned from my former customers.?That would be a great deal for them, no money out of pocket. It would have put any risk on my shoulders.

Chances are pretty good they would have gone for it. And if they had I would be making a lot of money every month from that deal! By using my list in that way I would have taken the relationship I had built up over time and leveraged it into thousands of dollars in revenue each and every month.

Remember this lesson. Apply offline lessons to your online business and be creative when it comes to your list. Remember ?the money is in the list?, treat it like the valuable asset that it is and you can use it to make you lots of money for years to come.

Steven Clifford: Letters From the Editor

I put blogging on hiatus to write a book. This took more time than expected due to my editor's frequent objections, shown in his emails:

Dec. 10, 2010

Steve,

Your book, The Election of 2012, will make a superb satirical novel satire after one small change.

Your fictional Republican presidential candidate, Michele Mannbach crosses the line of satire and becomes farce. She is far too risible and improbable for the former. She is a cartoon character with her claims that God sent earthquakes and hurricanes to get the attention of American politicians, the founding fathers abolished slavery, and the battles of Lexington and Concord were fought New Hampshire. Having her kick off her campaign by confusing John Wayne the actor with John Wayne the serial killer, wishing Elvis Presley a happy birthday on the anniversary of his death and asking whether Congress is pro-America or anti-America are too over-the-top and not comical.

This mars an otherwise excellent book. Once you make this small change, I think we will have a best seller.

Feb. 2, 2011

Steve,

Your new fictional candidate, Perry Rick is more absurd and less funny than Michele Mannbach. A swaggering but moronic Texas governor is a stale joke. We lived this for eight years.

The Perry Rick you created is not only beyond satire, he is beyond farce. Even in slapstick comedy one cannot accept a major party Presidential candidate who does not know the number of Justices on the Supreme Court, the voting age, the age requirement for the President, refers to Kim Jong-Il as "Kim Jong the Second," and thinks the American Revolution was fought in the 16th century. The debate scene where Perry Rick can't recall the federal departments he wants to abolish would be excessive in a Three Stooges movie.

I await your next draft.

Steve,

If it bends it's funny. If it breaks it's not funny. Your latest fictional candidate, Cain Herman breaks. His abysmal ignorance of economics, taxation, and foreign policy is not funny. It is simply ridiculous.

You compound this by having him use campaign cash to buy his own book, propose an electric fence on the Mexican border, question the existence of Palestinians, believe that Cuban is a language, place "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" in the Constitution, and state "When they ask me who is the president of Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan I'm going to say, you know, I don't know."

Already over the top, you then paint him as a horn dog and serial sexual harasser. That a cretinous African American pizza executive with no political experience and a sexual predator could receive the Republican nomination would be inane in a fairy tale.

You fictional candidate must have significant political experience. Make him a Senator, House Majority Leader, or Governor.

I know you can fix this.

Steve,

A satirist should use the rapier. To portray latest fictional Republican presidential candidate Ging Newtrich you used a sledgehammer.

Having him campaign as an outsider after serving as Majority Leader and grifting $1.6 million from Freddie and Fanny for influence peddling is a deft satirical touch. You should simply stick to this theme.

Fictional characters even in satirical novels should be internally consistent. Actions should spring from basic character. But your Ging Newtrich is hopelessly erratic. He lurches incongruously from one asinine act to another. He shuts down the government over disappointment with his seating on Air Force One, demands children of welfare recipients be raised in orphanages, advocates the death penalty for drug dealers, proposes the Moon as the 51st State, was fined $300,00 for ethics violations, makes megalomaniacal statement such as "People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz," proclaims himself "grandiose" in a debate, and compares himself to Lincoln, DeGaulle, and Pericles.

He serves his first wife with divorce papers while she was in a hospital recovering from cancer surgery and cheats on his second in an eight-year affair with a staff member while leading the impeachment of a President for getting a blow job. Why do you portray your Republican candidates as obsessed with sex? Everyone knows that sex ranks 73rd on the list of favorite activities among Republicans, far below expressing outrage at government spending while depositing social security checks or even folding shopping bags flat.

Unless Ging Newtrich suffers from multiple personality disorder, these ludicrous episodes do not reflect a coherent and unified character. Even in a fictional world, this man would be placed in a padded cell for the criminally insane along with his third wife who you describe as having "an injected molded thermoplastic face incapable of registering any human reaction, offset by a hair bob engineered from thinly extruded platinum wire, so as to resemble a space alien from the Galaxy Zork-El."

These characters are simply unimaginable.

Try making your candidate a former Governor who believes in nothing other than he should be President.

December 4, 2011

Steve,

At first I thought we could work with your new fictional candidate, Romm Mittney. In the first half of the book you present him as a robotic fool who believes in nothing other than his own success. You illustrate this with pointed examples of his flip-flops on abortion, immigration, stimulus spending, tax cuts, health care, and even his essential ideology.

If you had stayed with this theme you would have a good satirical character. Instead, you keep piling on nonsensical details that are incompatable with his basic make up. Why would someone who believes nothing and wants to please everyone say "I'm not concerned about the poor," "I like being able to fire people who provide services to me," "Corporations are people, my friend... of course they are, " "I should tell my story. I'm also unemployed, " and dismiss speech royalties of $374,000 as "not very much"?

You are mired in contradictions. You write that he reminds everyone of the college goody-goody who was always running for office, sucked up to professors, paid his phone bill the day it arrived to enhance his credit rating, chaired the honor board, and ratted on his roommate for smoking dope. Therefore that no one likes him. Yet he becomes the Republican nominee. How is this possible?

You depict him as a soulless, emotional vacant automaton. But what sort of robot would drive from Boston to Ontario with his Irish Setter on the roof of his car, offer to bet an opponent $10,000 during a debate, or utter Bushisms such as, "I believe in an America where millions of Americans believe in an America that's the America millions of Americans believe in. That's the America I love."

Finally, you make him a Mormon. Poking fun at religion is fair game, but you must not concoct absurd falsehoods, for example, joking that Mormons believe that the Angel Moroni guided Joseph Smith, a noted charlatan, to buried golden plates. By putting his head inside a special hat along with a magic rock, Smith was able to translate these plates, written in a language he called "Reformed Egyptian," (a language never otherwise encountered before or after) into The Book Of Mormon. In this sacred scripture, Jesus appears in the Americas some time after his resurrection to minister to remnants of the lost tribes of Israel. The book further describes great cities and great battles in America in the fourth century A.D. fought with metal weapons, chariots, swords, scimitars, and breastplates. This is gratuitous, not credible, not funny and probably libelous.

Please finish this book by creating a comic but still conceivable Republican candidate.

Dan Zitin

February 22, 2012

Steve,

Congratulations. You new fictional Republican candidate Senator San Ricktorum, who would be comfortable as the Grand Inquisitor, is a great comic character. I laughed out loud every time he appeared in the book. The joke about what turns up when one Google's him is very creative.

This is true satire because the Republicans conceivably could nominate a fundamentalist Catholic, although not one as tyrannical, imbecilic, and goofy as Ricktorum. His character is consistent and coherent since his hilarious bigotry, homophobia, and misogyny, as well his self-righteous repression and neo-feudal economics, spring directly from his demented, Vatican-infested, credo. I like your use of a sweater vest as metaphor for Ricktorum's constricted worldview and philosophical straight jacket.

Please make one small change and we will publish The Election of 2012. You need not explicitly state that Ricktorum suffers from congenital constipation and is sexually fixated on his mother. These traits were obvious from the behavior and attitudes you portrayed. Remember that a writer should always show not tell.

Our promotion people are excited about and have booked you on Hannity, Huckabee, and Limbaugh and are planning a book tour of 25 mega-churches.

Brew and brie | Eat | Life | London Free Press

There?s a growing school of thought that beer is more suited to pairing with food than is wine.

Now, don?t me wrong. I?m not saying that you should avoid pairing wine with food. There are some places where wine seems to be irreplaceable. Personally, if I?m going to be eating a pasta dish with a tomato gravy, I definitely want a big Italian red to go with it. It?s just that there are situations where beer seems to be a better choice.

Take the wine and cheese parties that you?ve been invited to over the years. You?re sitting there with a piece of reasonably priced brie and a glass of chardonnay, trying to figure out how these things go together. Well, the chardonnay has a buttery character, and so does the soft cheese. The question is whether that?s enough to make a good pairing. The problem is that wine has no carbonation and no bitterness to play off the fat content of the brie. The chardonnay might match with the flavour, but it doesn?t do much to refresh the palate between bites. The small amount of bitterness and the comparatively heavy carbonation of a wheat beer might be a better match.

The three main concepts in pairing beer with food are to cut, contrast or complement the dish that you?re pairing the beer with. Ideally, if the dish that you?re eating is rich and creamy, you?ll want something that?s light but relatively hoppy in order to remove the fatty unctuousness from your palate. If you have a strongly flavoured dish, you might want to contrast it with something that?s equally strongly flavoured, but in a different way. Finally, there?s always the possibility of simply matching the flavours in the food and beer pairing so that they complement and enhance each other.

On Tuesday, I was at the second beer dinner organized by Greg Clow of Canadian Beer News. It was at L.A.B. restaurant in Toronto's Little Italy and featured the food of chef Howard Dubrovsky and beers from the local Great Lakes Brewery. It?s infrequent during a beer dinner that I see a chef attempt to go for all three pairing concepts over the course of a menu, so I will use them here as illustrative examples.

The first course of the evening was a seafood chowder with mussels and shrimp. The chowder itself was almost impossibly creamy, with a faint hint of bacony smokiness. The question with a dish of this nature is ?how do you avoid succumbing to palate fatigue?? With each bite, it loses some of its impact. The answer was to pair it with Great Lakes? No Chance With Miranda Saison. Because Saison naturally has a wealth of carbonation, it cut the creamy texture from the palate, in addition to providing tart notes from the Belgian yeast which refreshed the senses between spoonfuls.

The main course was a chinotto-braised beef short rib (chinotto is the Brio soft drink) on a bed of ancient grains with an orange espuma (foam) over the top. That?s a wide variety of fairly intense flavours, but Dubrovsky is talented enough that they were never busy. It was contrasted with a pairing of Great Lakes? Kama Stoutra, an Indian Imperial Stout which was designed by Zack Weinberg, who had won the right to brew it at Great Lakes in a home-brewing contest. It contained curry, of all things. I do not know that I would drink a lot of it by itself, but when paired with the short rib, it contrasted the intense flavours and demonstrated a different way the dish could have gone, had the chef made different choices.

Finally, there was a pot au chocolate paired served with Great Lakes? Dude Where?s My Czar Imperial Stout. The dessert was topped with a ganache that incorporated the beer, which had been flavoured with bourbon-soaked vanilla beans. Not only was it an exemplary complement because the vanilla in the beer enhanced the chocolate, it was fun to eat. I have to admit to my attempt at combining the beer and dessert together in the bottom of a glass as an impromptu beer float.

Social faux pas like these are probably the reason I?m not a restaurant critic.

(AP) ? His nickname is the Human Pogo Stick and Utah's Jeremy Evans set out to put some bounce back into the Slam Dunk Contest.

Evans endeared himself to the fans with a mix of props and creativity, and they voted him the winner of one of the marquee events of the NBA's All-Star Saturday festivities.

Evans, who got into the competition as a replacement for injured New York guard Iman Shumpert, earned 29 percent of the 3 million votes cast. He beat out Houston's Chase Budinger, Indiana's Paul George and Minnesota's Derrick Williams for the Jazz's first-ever trophy in the contest.

In a departure from past dunk competitions, fans were given complete voting power and cast their ballots by text message after each of the four participants competed in three one-dunk rounds.

Evans dunked with a camera on his head, slammed two basketballs while jumping over a seated assistant and donned a Karl Malone jersey to dunk over mailman-dressed comedian Kevin Hart.

Evans said the Jazz didn't have any input in the Malone-themed idea.

"Not at all," he said. "I was just thanking the Jazz fans. You want to do something to get them in it. So I felt that was a good way. And Dwight Howard, he helped me big time. That was huge."

Budinger got just as many cheers from the Amway Center fans as Evans, and some in the celebrity-filled crowd sighed when the winner was announced.

Budinger got his biggest reaction when he donned a Cedric Ceballos jersey and imitated his 1992 blindfolded dunk, completing it with a reverse slam.

"I've very happy with my performance. I went out there, I had a plan and I executed the plan and the fans voted and I didn't win and that happens sometimes," Budinger said. "But I had great dunks and they're going to be great memories as well."

Kevin Love knows something about dunking. He does most of his dirty work inside for Minnesota, but he got to show off his outside touch on Saturday night.

Love beat out Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant to win the 3-Point Shootout. The former UCLA star was consistent throughout, but had to survive a tiebreaker in the first round and sweat out the last few shots from Durant to pull out the 17-14 victory in the final.

Love is in the middle for a breakout year for Minnesota, averaging 25 points and 9.9 rebounds a game. But he also has connected on 49 of 141 3-point attempts for the Timberwolves.

"You know, I'm a guy that loves to rebound the ball, a guy that loves to play inside, really a physical player," Love said. "But for me, coming into the league, I was told not to shoot 3-point shots, so to be where I am now and continue to work on my game; I think this definitely speaks to my versatility. I think I'll just continue to improve year in and year out."

Celebrities lined the court for the appetizer before Sunday's NBA All-Star game, and the first event saw the continuation of the good vibes that New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin has brought to the Big Apple recently

With Knicks super fan Spike Lee looking on, Team New York had the touch from the outside and won the Shooting Stars event. Former Knicks star Allan Houston nailed his third attempt at a half-court shot to give his team consisting of current Knicks guard Landry Fields and Cappie Pondexter of the WNBA's New York Liberty the victory.

San Antonio point guard Tony Parker then won the Skills Competition. Parker was the only one of six participants to break 30 seconds in the first round (29.2) and this time of 32.8 in the final run on the obstacle course was better than Boston's Rajon Rondo (34.6) and New Jersey's Deron Williams (41.4).

Love was tied for third after the opening round of the Shootout and beat Miami's Mario Chalmers 5-4 in a tiebreaker. Defending champion James Jones led all shooters in the opening round with 22 and Durant was next with 20.

Orlando's Ryan Anderson just missed eliminating both Love and Chalmers, totaling 17 after missing his final 2-point money ball.

Love and Durant both had 16 in Round 2 to advance to the finals, with Jones posting 12.

Houston, Fields and Pondexter completed the shooting course in 37.3 seconds in the final round. It was better than the 47.6 posted by the Team Texas trio of former Houston Rockets star and TNT analyst Kenny Smith, current Rocket Chandler Parsons and Sophia Young of the San Antonio Silver Stars.

Team Orlando and Atlanta posted the slowest times of Round 1 and were eliminated.

The speedy Parker put together an impressive display on the skills obstacle course, which involves participants moving through a dribbling circuit, successfully throwing chest passes through a hanging tire and driving for a layup.

Williams, the 2008 winner, holds the record for the skills' course at 25 seconds, but had trouble completing a pass in the final round on Saturday.

A Closer Look at Google Public DNS

Earlier this month, Google announced that it had become the largest public DNS service in the world, handling an average of more than 70 billion requests a day. From Google?s point of view, this was great. As it pointed out in its official blog, a good DNS service helps make the Web faster and more secure. That?s true.?But is a giant DNS in Google?s hands really good for the world?

The DNS or Domain Name System is often described as the ?phone book? of the Internet, but that analogy tends to understate its importance. Imagine that you?ve suddenly landed in the middle of a giant megalopolis without any street names or building addresses or distinguishing characteristics and no working GPS. That would be the Internet without a domain name system.

But while the DNS system is criticial for planetary communications, helping to run it typically hasn?t brought anyone power or glory. This led to a certain amount of neglect, which in turn created a business opportunity for companies willing to tackle the job of improving DNS.

Three years ago, I sat down with David Ulevitch, a developer who founded OpenDNS in 2005 to help make the Internet faster and more reliable for individuals and businesses by providing a better domain name service. At the time, OpenDNS had built a small but profitable business providing improved DNS for free to individuals and for a fee to enterprises. It later grew to operate the largest network of public DNS servers, serving millions of users around the world.

Unlike Google, Ulevitch has never struck me as being obsessed with world domination, so I reached out to him this week to ask what he thought of Google?s entry, and now colossal presence, in the space.

What are the implications of Google being the largest public DNS service? Is this good for ordinary people who use the Internet?

First, I think it?s a clear indication that Google takes DNS seriously. I?ve always said that Google?s purview is limited to everything between the user and the advertisement. DNS fits squarely within those sights and cuts across a number of strategic areas of focus for Google?speed, security, analytics and control. I think efforts to make the Internet faster is good for ordinary people, but I think that there?s more to Google?s motives then pure benevolence. That?s not to say good can?t be a byproduct, but rather, there are ancillary benefits that may not be as friendly to the ordinary Internet user.

With DNS, it?s possible to control key components of Internet navigation. ?Google already controls search, they are quickly gaining market share to control the browser, and when you put in DNS, it becomes the trifecta of complete navigational control. ?The ?omnibox? is something Google introduced with Chrome, but I actually introduced it to Google PM Sundar Pichai a number of years before Chrome existed when demoing our vision for OpenDNS to him as he was then the PM for Google Toolbar, and other Google desktop products.

What role has Google played in the DNS ecosystem? Do you see them as a competitor or a partner?

Google has helped raise the importance of DNS above the network engineering community, which has been really good. They?ve also worked with us to advance the state of the art for DNS performance, something we?ve really enjoyed working with them to make happen. It?s not so much competition as it is choice in the market. If they started defaulting Chrome to use Google DNS, I think that?s something we would take issue with, but for now, we like the idea of people using a DNS other than their ISPs, that?s a good idea for a lot of reasons.

What are some of those reasons?

I like the idea of separation of services. ISPs provide a pipe. Other vendors provide security. Other vendors provide email. When one party controls all the services, it?s a ?synergy? for the company, but rarely for the consumer. With DNS in particular, there are performance and security benefits that third party DNS providers offer that ISPs aren?t incentivized to do since DNS is a cost-center for them, and a profit-center for us.

Book Review : BOOK REVIEW: The Science of Sin: The Psychology of the Seven Deadlies (and Why They Are So Good For You) by Simon M. Laham

BOOK REVIEW: The Science of Sin: The Psychology of the Seven Deadlies (and Why They Are So Good For You)

Contrary to popular belief, experiencing anger may make a person more optimistic and more likely to change long-held opinions. Swelling with pride can increase agreeability, while growing lusty could make a person more attentive, more creative and even more charitable, suggests Laham in this promising debut.

With a provocative wit (in the first chapter he encourages readers to grab a bra so that they can experience a study firsthand), Laham, an experimental psychologist, reveals how indulging in the seven deadly sins can be advantageous. After briefly explaining the history of the deadlies ? Pope Gregory the Great, elaborating on the work of monks, popularized them in the sixth century ? Laham explores recent research into the ?fascinating complexity? of lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, anger, envy and pride and their effects on the human psyche.

In his chapter on envy, Laham describes an experiment in which participants, some of whom read a brief description of an extremely successful peer, were asked to imagine novel uses for a brick. ?The envious, upwardly comparing participants were more creative, thinking of more things to do with a brick than the controls,? he writes. Laham?s favorite use for the brick: as a mock coffin at a Barbie funeral.

As he discusses psychological studies, Laham provides expert analysis without bombarding readers with technical terms. It?s a fun, rapid read, but also a probing look at an engrossing field of scientific inquiry.

To Go Or Not To Go Fsbo | welcome to olivetchristianchurch.org

Many people tend to think that by hiring a real estate agent, they are losing out on money that they could have saved if they sold their own home. If you believe that, then you probably believe in a Tooth Fairy. It happens all too often ? people posting that ?For Sale? sign on their front yards, in hopes of somebody showing some interest. Fat chance somebody, or ANYBODY for that matter shows interest within a reasonable amount of time!

Blood-sucking leeches ? too often, people think this way about the average, everyday real estate agent. To most people, these agents are agents of deception and skulduggery, people who look out for themselves and themselves alone, their clients? best interests and needs be damned. The point is, a real estate broker is somebody who could do more than one ordinary layman, a homeowner, that is, could aspire to do, because of the myriad resources they have at the tips of their fingers.

People in the business of buying or selling properties are not able to avail of several key advertisement tactics and tools, including print and media ads reprinted weekly and an effective, extensive lead network that could generate credible referrals in bulk. Rather, for sale by owners would usually rely on word of mouth and newspaper advertisements to help them in their goal to sell.

What could inveigle an immediate buyer and attract them with more urgency better than good ole fashioned word of mouth?

For sale by owners are doing themselves a disservice by handling the transaction themselves. There is nothing wrong with some outside assistance, and if you explore each of the tools on your utility belt or tool shed, you have a much better chance of selling. These resources are all at the touch of a willing and knowledgeable real estate agent.

So how does a fsbo find the right agent? Simple ? go ask your friends, family, coworkers, even the random hobo on the street (who might have had a home once) about reliable real estate brokers. Word of mouth carries a lot of weight in the real estate world so the fsbo should do their own due diligence and find out which agency and which particular agent to use. Male, female, short, tall, fat, skinny, at the end of the day it?s your call. What matters is how well they can sell, and you would want to ask them questions, such as the number of sales facilitated in the previous month. Ask them what their plan of attack is to sell the property and what various angles they are going to take. And most of all, determine how much of a personality they have. Determination and personality go a long way!

Fla. lawmaker admits texts harassing US prosecutor

FILE -In this Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 file photo, Rep. Richard Steinberg, D-Miami Beach, debates the redistricting bill during the house session, in Tallahassee, Fla. Steinberg, who admitted sending suggestive text messages using a hidden identity to a married federal prosecutor was home Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, with his family amid a federal investigation into possible stalking. (AP Photo/Steve Cannon)

(AP) ? A contrite Florida state lawmaker who admitted using a hidden identity to send numerous inappropriate, harassing texts to a married federal prosecutor is facing a federal investigation into possible stalking.

Rep. Richard Steinberg, a married Miami Beach Democrat, returned home from Tallahassee even though both legislative chambers were in session, said his spokesman Christian Ulvert. Steinberg, 39, and his wife have a young daughter.

"It's a family matter. That's the No. 1 priority," Ulvert.

Steinberg, responding to inquiries about the probe from The Miami Herald, issued a statement acknowledging that he sent "inappropriate and unsolicited messages" to Marlene Fernandez-Karavetsos, an assistant U.S. attorney in Miami he said he has known for 15 years. Steinberg's spokesman also provided a copy to The Associated Press.

"I deeply regret and wholeheartedly apologize for the disrespect that I have shown her, her husband and my constituents," Steinberg said in the statement. "Most importantly, words cannot express how sorry I am to my wife, for the disrespect I have shown her, and my entire family."

According to the warrant filed in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court, investigators traced dozens of text messages sent under the user name "itsjustme24680" to Steinberg's home in Miami Beach. The number associated with that identity was a "spoof," according to investigators, meaning the true phone number was hidden on the victim's phone.

The warrant details some of the texts, which began in August, and show that Fernandez-Karavetsos tried numerous times to get the sender to stop.

"Sexxxy mama?" read one text.

"How do I know you?" Fernandez-Karavetsos responded.

Later, "itsjustme" wrote: "Good morning!"

"Leave me alone" the prosecutor responded.

"Is that any way to treat a friend? LOL" came the response.

Then Fernandez-Karavetsos wrote: "This is the last time I'm going to ask, you've been texting long enough ? who is this?"

"Considering we're both married parents, probably best I not answer that at this point," wrote "itsjustme" in reply.

Fernandez-Karavetsos, 37, is married to George Karavetsos, also a federal prosecutor and chief of the Miami U.S. attorney's narcotics section. Both declined comment Thursday.

In a meeting with investigators, Fernandez-Karavetsos said she knew Steinberg "in a professional non-intimate way" and provided screen shots of the numerous messages on her phone.

"The victim indicated that the messages have caused her substantial emotional distress and serve no legitimate purpose," Miami Beach police Det. Ricardo Arias wrote in a search warrant affidavit.

The search warrant lists the potential offense as stalking, which is a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison. Steinberg has not been charged with any crime. The Secret Service is the lead investigative agency with the Miami Beach Police Department assisting, said Miami Beach police spokesman Det. Juan Sanchez.

Steinberg, an attorney, was elected in 2008 to represent part of Miami Beach in the state House of Representatives. Before that, he spent seven years as a Miami Beach commissioner, and he is the son of former state Sen. Paul B. Steinberg.

The Age of Insight: The Quest to Understand the Unconscious in Art, Mind, and Brain, from Vienna 1900 to the Present
by Eric R. Kandel. Random House, 2012

Neuroscientist and Nobel laureate Kandel has crafted a fascinating meditation on the interplay among art, psychology and brain science. The author, who fled Vienna as a child, has remained captivated by Austrian artists Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele, each of whom was profoundly influenced by Sigmund Freud and by the emerging scientific approach to medicine in their day. Kandel describes the psychological and biological insights reflected in their paintings, as well as the neuroscience behind how the beholder perceives the paintings. He concludes by calling for a new, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the mind, one that combines the humanities with the natural and social sciences.

Turing?s Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe
by George Dyson. Pantheon Books, 2012

These two books on the mid-20th-century information revolution take readers back to a time when New Jersey, not Silicon Valley, was the center of American innovation. Gertner?s The Idea Factory is a lively account of the minds behind Bell Labs, then the research and development wing of AT&T, and how the scientists created the network of copper cables, microwave links and glass fibers that made the company?s dream of ?universal? connectivity a reality. Dyson?s Turing?s Cathedral focuses on the creative geniuses at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton who invented computer code. In doing so, they realized the theoretical construct that mathematician Alan Turing dubbed the universal machine. Together they would pave the way for today?s digital universe.

Imagine: How Creativity Works
by Jonah Lehrer. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012

Imagine argues that modern science allows us to identify and harness the many different thought processes from which creativity emerges. The book is least convincing when Lehrer makes sweeping claims: he fixates on Elizabethan England as an age of ?excess genius,? as though no artists have equaled its accomplishments since, and he relies too heavily on patents as measures of creativity. The book?s strength lies in specific examples?detailed stories about 3M, Pixar, Bob Dylan and Don Lee, the computer programmer who became a master mixer of quirky cocktails. These insightful tales make Imagine well worth the read. ? ?Ferris Jabr

Activists demand ceasefire, aid access in Syria

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Warnings from Syrian activists of a humanitarian catastrophe in Homs grew more desperate Thursday as government forces resumed shelling an opposition stronghold in the?central city, where hundreds have died in a weekslong siege.

The toll mounted a day after two Western journalists were killed in shelling in Homs, and there more?international calls for a cease-fire to allow assistance to reach areas hardest hit by the regime's crackdown on opponents.

?

U.N. investigators accused Assad's security apparatus of crimes against humanity as world outrage mounted over violence that has cost thousands of lives during an almost year-long popular uprising against his 11-year rule.

A "Friends of Syria" meeting in Tunis on?Friday?will call on Syrian forces to stop firing to give international aid groups access to areas worst hit by the violence which are running out of medicine and food, according to a draft declaration obtained by Reuters.

Russia, however, said Moscow and Beijing ? staunch allies of President Assad ? remained opposed to any foreign interference in Syria.

Across the country, activists reported between 16 and 40 people killed in attacks by security forces in rebellious areas that included the Hamacountryside in central Syria and the mountainous Jabal al-Zawiya region in the north. There has been no way to confirm independently the specific death tolls provided by the activists or by the Syrian government.?

In London, diplomats from United States, Europe and Arab nations prepared to demand that Assad call a ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid in hard-hit areas.

Assad's tanks move in to Syrian rebel stronghold

The ultimatum, outlined by participants to the London talks, is likely to be presented Friday in Tunisia at a major international conference on the Syrian crisis. Further defiance by Assad could bring even tougher sanctions and isolation.

In a statement released Thursday, British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said the U.N. Human Rights Council report on Syria is "damning."

?I am appalled by the evidence that young children are being targeted by snipers, and that security forces continue to arrest and torture wounded patients in State hospitals," Burt's statement read.

The minister added that those responsible for these "terrible atrocities" will be held accountable. British Prime Minister David Cameron said in a news conference in London the Syrian government was guilty of butchery and murder.

Homs has been under a fierce government attack for nearly three weeks. The International Committee for the Red Cross said it was trying to negotiate daily two-hour ceasefires in Homs to provide aid to civilians in violence-hit areas.

Homs-based activist Omar Shaker said intense barrages hit residential districts in Baba Amr again Thursday, but there was no immediate word on casualties. He said food, water and medical supplies are running dangerously low in Baba Amr.

"Every minute counts. People will soon start to collapse from lack of sleep and shortages in food," he said.

On Wednesday, shelling of Baba Amr killed American-born war correspondent Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik.

They were among a group of journalists who had crossed into Syria illegally and were sharing accommodations with activists, raising speculation that government forces targeted the makeshift media center where they were staying. But opposition groups had previously described the shelling as indiscriminate.

At least two other Western journalists were wounded Wednesday ? French reporter Edith Bouvier of Le Figaro and British photographer Paul Conroy of the Sunday Times. Bouvier, was shown in a video posted on YouTube Thursday pleading to be evacuated so she can have an operation. She said her leg is broken in two places.

Bouvier, propped up with pillows and covered in blankets, said field hospital doctors had treated her as well as they could but did not have the equipment to operate.

"I need to be operated on as soon as possible," she said.

Bouvier, whose thigh was tightly wrapped in bandages and seemed very calm, said her femur was shattered.

A Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman offered condolences to the families of Colvin and Ochlik but rejected any responsibility for their deaths. The spokesman urged foreign journalists to respect Syrian laws and not to sneak into the country.

NYT: As others isolate Syria, Chavez ships fuel to it

Some Syrians held protests and vigils Wednesday night in several parts of Homs in commemoration of Colvin and Ochlik.

"Remi Ochlik, Marie Colvin, we will not forget you," read one banner held by protesters in the town of Qsour in Homs province.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 16 people were killed in attacks by security forces in rebellious areas that included the Hama countryside in central Syria and the mountainous Jabal al-Zawiya region in the north. Another group, the Local Coordination Committees activist network, said the overall number of Syrians killed was 40. The reason for the differing tolls was not immediately clear.

In Geneva, a panel of U.N. human rights experts said Thursday that the United Nations has a secret list of top Syrian officials who could face investigation for crimes against humanity carried out by security forces in their crackdown against the anti-government uprising.

The U.N. experts indicated that the list goes as high as Assad.

Experts say the list is initially likely to be more of a deterrent against further abuses than a direct threat to the Assad regime. Syria isn't a member of the International Criminal Court so its jurisdiction doesn't apply there, and Russia would likely block any moves in the U.N. Security Council to refer the country to the Hague-based tribunal.

Thousands of Syrians have died in the violence since March and the panel, citing what it called a reliable source, said at least 500 children are among the dead.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague told BBC radio that military intervention was very unlikely, as "the consequences of any outside intervention are much harder to foresee."

A senior EU official said foreign ministers meeting in Brussels next week will add seven Syrian government ministers to those already sanctioned. Sanctions include asset freezes and visa bans for officials, commanders of the security forces and others considered responsible for human rights abuses.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of EU rules, said additional restrictions may be imposed on Syria's central bank, on imports of precious metals from the country, and on cargo flights.

The EU had already sanctioned more than 70 Syrians and 19 organizations and has banned imports of Syrian crude oil.

In Amman, Jordan, several dozen Syrians, mainly from Homs, staged a protest outside the U.S. Embassy asking for Western military intervention. "Almighty God, destroy Bashar," they chanted.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Kirsten Dirksen: San Francisco's Smallest Legal Apartments Inspired ...

Bay Area developer Patrick Kennedy wants to build the housing equivalent of the Smart Car.
His SmartSpaces will be small -- just a couple hundred square feet -- and prefabricated.

To create a smarter space, Kennedy constructed a 160-square-foot test home (the smallest legal-sized apartment for California) inside a Berkeley warehouse. SmartSpace 1.0 is filled with innovations like the SmartBench, an adjustable banquette that converts from a dining table to a guest bed.

To give the space a true test run, an MIT student lived in it for a few weeks to determine what features were truly smart in real life circumstances. She gave low marks to the "Euro shower" (the shower and drain are part of the bathroom) and to the tiny, round kitchen sink (too small for a pasta pan), neither which made the cut for SmartSpace 2.0.

In this video, Kennedy gives us an exclusive tour of the tiny SmartSpace 1.0 studio, as well as of his 78-square-foot Airstream travel trailer parked outside (his vacations onboard with wife and child inspired his latest development).

Benefits of Natural Supplements | Meditation and Health Care

Over the past few years you?ve probably had one or two friends who have suddenly embraced a fitness based lifestyle. These folks are frequently rather zealous in their efforts to reach their maximum health potential. And while this can be a little annoying if you have to sit and listen to them preach about their newly found lifestyle, they oftentimes make some pretty good points.

It?s no secret that a well-balanced diet, commitment to exercise and regular use of dietary supplements like Camilia by Boiron can go a long ways towards building a healthy body and mind. But figuring out exactly which supplements you should be using can be a bit of a challenge. After all, there are literally hundreds of them to choose from and not all of them are necessarily the best quality.

One thing that supplement newbies should be on the lookout for are products from well known, and trusted, brand names. Carditone, for example, is a product that?s been around for a long time and has developed a loyal following. That kind of long term good reputation is tough to fake.

Your friends who jump on the health and fitness bandwagon are definitely on to something, even if they?re a little annoying.
