Tea Party pushes for change at convention

The Republican National Convention will be shortened one day by bad weather, but activists from the conservative Tea Party movement heralded advancing Tropical Storm Isaac as a timely symbol of big changes ahead after November's election.

"We are looking at a hurricane here in Florida," said Michele Bachmann, a Tea Party founder and conservative member of the House of Representatives, late Sunday to a rally Christian conservatives and Tea Party faithful on the margins of the convention.

"We're looking at a political hurricane," she said in a speech electrifying her supporters. "We're looking at a spiritual hurricane," she said, further whipping up the crowd.

The Tea Party -- a powerful Republican faction responsible in large part for the return of the House of Representatives to Republican control in 2010 -- is to play a relatively small role at this week's convention, which has been curtailed from a four-day gathering to just three here in the Gulf Coast city of Tampa.

But they made a show of force at the afternoon and evening of rallies and prayer meetings Sunday at a local mega-church -- an event meant to rouse the support of this most conservative of the Republican party's faithful.

"It's time for each of us to show up and suit up and stand up," Bachmann exhorted the crowd, to thunderous applause.

The meeting here, several miles away from the official Republican convention events downtown, provided a needed outlet for conservatives who have always been lukewarm toward former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who this week will formally named the party's presidential nominee.

The pre-convention gathering at The River at Tampa Bay Church, which was billed as a "unity rally," gave conservatives a chance to celebrate their considerable clout in the Republican party after scarcely three years' existence.

At a different forum earlier Sunday however, another Tea Party favorite was in a far less conciliatory mood.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, a perennial presidential contender, including his failed bid earlier this year, led a rally of devoted followers Sunday, in sounding almost defiant as he exhorted his followers to continue to press for greater change from within the party.

Paul, 77, who is leaving Congress at the end of this year, was not given a speaking role at this year's convention, despite being one of the Republicans' most prominent figures -- although he is to be celebrated with a video tribute on Tuesday.

"Believe me, we will get in the tent because we will become the tent eventually," he said.

"With the energy that we have, it seems to me they would be begging and pleading for us to come into the party," he said at a rally in a separate venue that preceded Tea Party rally.

Bachmann presidential ambitions fizzled out earlier this year, as did those of another speaker at Sunday's event -- former pizza business executive Herman Cain.

Bachmann faltered over a series of of gaffes and missteps, while Cain's candidacy unraveled largely because of a sex scandal and the perception that his campaign was driven by little more than his "9-9-9" tax reform program that he recited so often it became a subject of parody.

Both however remain beloved figures among conservative Republicans.

Of the roughly 2,000 people in attendance was Steve Haller, who said he drove all the way from Louisiana to be attend the Tea Party event, who said he hoped it would bring the various disparate factions of the party together.

"I expect unity from this night's event this is about bringing everyone together," he said, adding that the party's various factions needed to come coalesce around Romney's candidacy to ensure Democratic President Barack Obama's defeat this fall.

His aim is to bring the US down to its knees. I don't want that," he said.

"I'm not against Obama, I'm for America. Obama's the one who's against America," said Haller.

Under a red, white and blue umbrella, Maryann Kempf also said the Tea Party's message lined up with her own beliefs and said it played an essential role in Republican politics.

"Conservatism needs to rule the day to get this country back on track," she said.

The Tea Party is a constant reminder of conservatism and the need to stop spending," she said.

Networks prepare to juggle politics, weather

NEW YORK (AP) ? Television networks are preparing to juggle two major stories in the coming days as Tropical Storm Isaac heads toward New Orleans after side-swiping the site of the GOP national convention in Tampa.

Anderson Cooper of CNN and Shepard Smith of Fox News Channel were shifted Monday by their networks to New Orleans. It's an odd rerun: four years ago Cooper also left a Republican convention to head to the gulf region ahead of Hurricane Gustav.

News networks already had to make programming changes with the Republicans postponing the opening night of their convention on Monday. The strength and timing of the storm will also affect how much time will be spent on each story.

Said one network executive: "Expect to see a lot of split-screens."

He tweets regularly.? He tweets aggressively.? He tweets without a filter.? He tweets without the benefit of having anyone in the organization with the ability or the will to tell him that maybe he should resist the urge to press the ?Tweet? button.

And his tweets naturally will generate criticism.? After all, Twitter is the great social equalizer, giving fans the ability to dress down the rich and powerful without ever having to face them.? And anything Irsay tweets on any topic that treads remotely close to controversial territory will generate responses from folks who relish the opportunity to pop off at a natural target who makes the target even larger by his tweets.

We like the fact that Irsay tweets.? Otherwise, we never would have known that Irsay?s Colts are engaged in trade talks with a still-unknown team about a still-unknown veteran player.

But the criticism of his ?trade winds? tweets seems to be getting to Irsay, who has lashed out at critics with, yes, a stream of fresh tweets.

It started out OK, with Irsay explaining that he?s merely engaged in customer relations:? ?ColtsFans pay hard earned $ 2c their team play,they make the game! So I?ll update them as I see fit while protecting sanctity of operations!?

But then he turned indignant:? ?If u don?t like it buy ur own team and try to make the playoffs 9 seasons n a row n put together 7 straight 12 win seasons n a row as Owner!?

And then he declared victory, and he presumably has retreated:? ?U can do all your judgmental chirpin? U want,it?s not about subjective opinions?it what you DO n what your track record shows! CHECKMATE!?

The second tweet is the most troubling.? Taunting folks who never will have the money to buy a team is bad enough; Irsay conveniently ignores the fact that he didn?t buy a team, either.? He inherited one.

Also, it?s hard for an owner to publicly claim credit for winning.? Yes, Irsay hired Bill Polian and Tony Dungy.? Yes, Irsay has managed not to meddle in the affair of the team.? But Irsay benefited greatly from the fact that he team was bad enough in 1997 to get in position to draft Peyton Manning in 1998.

And if Andrew Luck turns out to be the next great franchise quarterback, Irsay will have benefited greatly from the fact that Peyton?s neck gave out and the team went 2-14 in the same year that Luck was entering the NFL.

Regardless of whether an erratic and unpredictable approach to Twitter projects the image the NFL wants from its owners, the NFL surely doesn?t want one of its owners antagonizing the customers on Twitter, regardless of whether they are fans of the Colts or one of the other 31 teams.? Regardless, he?s providing another wrinkle in what remains the ultimate reality show.

1) Based on your bio it sounds like real estate is a real calling for you, what drew you to selling real estate?
From a young age, I always had an interest in real estate and finance. After a divorce in 1986, my mother decided to sell our home, as the maintenance and expenses were simply too much to deal with. I observed very closely, and was intrigued by the entire process, including the agents coming through our home on ?caravan? and all the ?strangers? viewing (and judging) our home each day. Despite Houston?s terrible market in at that time, our home sold relatively quickly ? and I?ll never forget my mother running into my bedroom that night well after I was asleep, screaming with excitement, ?It?s Sold, It?s Sold!? I nearly jumped out of my skin ? but her relief and excitement couldn?t be contained. As a Realtor today, I pride myself on being in-tune with both the professional and human element in every transaction. At the end of the day, it?s about the clients, and I think we often lose sight of the actual goal ? which is simply helping people.

2) What makes the Eastside of Seattle different from the rest of the city? How is the market lately?
First and foremost, the Eastside of Seattle is that much closer to the recreational opportunities of the Cascades, which I also thoroughly enjoy. From a housing standpoint, Seattle?s Eastside also offers a much larger inventory of single-family homes with larger yards and greater square footage compared to the central metropolitan area, especially in communities like Issaquah, Sammamish and Snoqualmie. Another important element is the popularity of the Eastside school districts, in particular the Bellevue, Issaquah and Lake Washington school districts. Seattle area parents are deeply involved in our area?s public schools, which can have a significant impact on property values. As of the Summer of 2012, nearly every area of the Seattle region is technically in a ?seller?s market.? Home prices are rising, days on market continues to decrease, and multiple offers have become commonplace ? especially in central Seattle, Bellevue and Kirkland.

3) You have a background in photography and graphic design, what do you think the biggest mistake people make when taking listing photos?
The biggest mistake is not hiring a professional photographer in the first place! In my market, the typical home value is greater than $450K. Thus, I can certainly find room in my marketing budget to work with a professional photographer who will showcase the property in the best way possible. Even when professionals are used, I think the photos are often too-highly edited, sometimes to their detriment. I have a particular distaste for the shots which have an overly saturated and soft ?artistic? look applied to them ? they almost always look dreary, and we certainly don?t need to add to the myth that it?s always raining in Seattle! Don?t get goofy with photo editing; it?s not cute or artistic, and can easily cause buyers to click forward to the next listing.

I can speak from personal experience. I myself moved from Austin, Texas to escape the extreme heat. I?ve been visiting the Seattle area for 15 years, and when the first opportunity came to move, I high-tailed it out of Texas. Based upon my experience in working with out-of-state buyers, I can definitely say I?m not alone. Not only are buyers looking to escape the heat, they are also moving to the Seattle area for greater recreational opportunities, and many look forward to the joy of gardening as well. With this said, it?s also interesting how many Seattle area natives are purposefully moving to Texas, Arizona or Florida . So I guess we?re trading population somewhat, as the grass is always greener (well? perhaps not in Phoenix).

5) What do you do for fun when you aren?t selling real estate?
I am bit obsessed with numbers, facts and figures. So when I?m not actually with clients, I spend a lot of my spare time paying attention to the market. It?s just ingrained in me to know as much as possible when it comes to how I earn a living. I?m also an internet marketing guru of sorts, so I?m constantly reviewing website statistics, and observing my colleagues and the real estate industry as a whole, particularly where it concerns technology. (Yes? I consider that ?fun.?) Outside of real estate, when I have the opportunity, I head for Mount Rainier ? literally my favorite place on earth. I feel a deep sense of peace and tranquility walking through the forests, hiking on the trails and snapping photos. I also enjoy photography, graphic arts, long road trips and traveling in general.

Red tape entangles injured service members who can no longer deploy

Daniel Kinberg, a former Navy Corpsman who was diagnosed with an inflammatory joint disease and post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from Afghanistan in 2010.

Daniel Kinberg had not planned on leaving the Navy. The second class petty officer was a reservist who enlisted in 1994 and eventually served as a Navy Corpsman to Marines deployed in Afghanistan's Helmand Province from October 2009 to June 2010.

Kinberg, a medical specialist, was constantly under fire. A suicide bomber struck in a bazaar, killing one of Kinberg's closest friends, and he was the first to respond. When the vehicle of his sergeant major was struck by an improvised explosive device, he could not attempt a rescue as it burned. He was often approached by Afghans who needed medical attention for their injured or dying children.

The deployment took a physical and mental toll on Kinberg, who is 40 and lives in San Diego. "We were always fearing for our lives every second and not knowing if the next step you take is going to be your last," he told NBC News.

He returned from the deployment with terrible back pain, which he attributes to frequent dives for cover and daylong foot patrols in rugged terrain with a full combat load. He was soon diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a disease characterized by inflammation in the spinal and pelvic joints. The disease can be hereditary, but Kinberg did not experience symptoms until during combat.?

When a doctor said in June 2010 that he could not be deployed again as a result, it was a "tough blow." A few months later, after having trouble reintegrating, Kinberg was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The yearlong battle that followed, however, as Kinberg attempted to retire from the Navy with disability and medical benefits, was more difficult than he could have imagined. At first, the military denied him a retirement with full benefits, arguing that the PTSD and ankylosing spondylitis pre-existed his service.

Experts who appeal cases like Kinberg's say his is one of many in which the military may wrongly try to separate an injured service member without benefits. Even if a service member is given a favorable decision, the average wait in each of the services is a year or longer, and most are left trying to navigate in a bureaucratic system that is not always kind to those who will never deploy again.

Last month, the disability system was criticized in a Congressional hearing for the long waits. As of late July, there were more than 26,000 open cases across the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. In the Army, which accounts for two-thirds of the caseload, service members wait the longest at an average of 427 days; the goal set by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs is to process active-duty cases in 295 days.

Medical retirement has been under Congressional scrutiny since 2007, when several commissions revealed that service members were frequently denied legitimate disability benefits and that an outdated processing system resulted in waits as long as 540 days. Since then, policies issued by DOD as well as Congressional legislation have resulted in significant improvements, primarily the streamlined process known as the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES), which allows DOD and VA to jointly assess medical conditions and disability ratings.

Veterans advocate Michael Parker, a former lieutenant colonel in the Army who estimates assisting on hundreds of disability cases in the past seven years, said that while the changes have led to better outcomes, many service members like Kinberg continue to be denied legitimate but costly benefits.

Service members often approach Parker, who is not a lawyer and does not charge a fee, after they're found fit to serve despite severe injuries, or if the military or VA has ruled the condition in question does not deserve a disability rating high enough to qualify for benefits; the threshold is 30 percent.

"Somebody will come to me and say, 'My case is broken, can you help me?' " Parker told NBC News. "Every day there is a new situation that is counter to taking care of wounded people."

Parker has seen cases in which the military "cherry picked" from a number of injuries, selecting the least aggravated one and assigning it a disability rating that did not qualify for full benefits upon retirement.?

He has also seen a range of perplexing cases, including a combat Marine who in 2010 was first found unfit due to service-related disabilities, but not at a 30 percent rating. The decision was then reversed and he was found fit for duty, but he was subsequently separated without benefits. When he tried to re-enlist, the Marine was denied on the grounds that his conditions disqualified him for service.

Congress soon passed laws prohibiting the military from discharging a service member due to a condition for which he or she had been previously evaluated and found fit for duty. Parker said the legislation is important, but that the military has found different ways to withhold disability benefits; he has handled cases where service members are administratively discharged for a service-connected disability before they even enter or complete IDES.

Daniel Kinberg was prepared for a difficult process. ?I never heard a good thing about it,? he said. ?Everyone says this is a nightmare.?

Kinberg's medical conditions were assessed by a three-person physical evaluation board (PEB), which found him unfit for duty as a result of the ankylosing spondylitis and PTSD, but said that both conditions were pre-existing. Specifically, the board indicated that the PTSD may have been tied to his ankylosing spondylitis, not combat. His case was sent to VA to receive a disability rating, and it returned a different decision: the PTSD was service-connected and received a 100 percent rating, which would have allowed him to retire with full benefits.

The Navy, however, disagreed, and enforced its original finding that the conditions pre-existed service ? without providing evidence to prove its case as required by law. Kinberg would be separated from the military with no DOD medical or disability benefits, though he would receive VA care and benefits.

"It?s a slap in the face," Kinberg said of the decision. "I know I?ll never be the same as I was before ... I used to be this happy guy and I don?t see me ever getting there."?

With Parker's representation, Kinberg appealed the decision. First, Parker convincingly argued that neither condition was pre-existing, but then the PEB reversed its original decision and found that the PTSD did not make Kinberg unfit for duty, which again prevented him from receiving a rating high enough for DOD benefits.

In May, Parker successfully appealed that decision before the Navy's physical evaluation board in Washington, D.C. In the end, the board agreed that both conditions were service-connected and made Kinberg unfit for duty, awarding him a 100 percent rating for PTSD, and as a result, a full DOD medical retirement.

In very rare cases, DOD told NBC News, the military can "depart" from a VA rating when approved at a high level. DOD said it did not know of cases in which the military did not follow the VA finding, but there is also no requirement to report those incidences.

Jason Perry, a former Army captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps who now assists service members with disability retirement cases, told NBC News that despite improvements to the medical retirement process, the system still seems "arbitrary."?

Often, Perry will see two cases with the same underlying facts, but different decisions. One service member will receive a high disability rating while another gets a substantially lower one.

DOD told NBC News that criteria for judgments differ across the services depending on the type of missions and fitness required of the service member.

Perry said, however, that the discrepancies are partly due to the subjectivity of individual doctors as well as the three-person panel that evaluates the merits of each medical retirement case.

Complaints like these are common on PEBforum.com, a website Perry founded that allows service members to glean intricacies of the process, ask other posters about their cases and learn how to avoid common pitfalls or mistakes.

Perry, who has handled 400 cases as a former Army captain and a for-hire lawyer over the past six-and-a-half years, doesn't believe those who serve on PEBs set out to "low ball" or deny benefits to service members. Instead, he thinks they're attempting to follow the rules, but often make errors in judging whether an injury is service-connected and is worthy of a full medical retirement.

Though designed to keep malingerers from taking advantage of the system, stringency for disability claims can prevent worthy cases of getting a proper ruling.

In Kinberg's case, he felt under constant scrutiny. While on medical hold, he was tasked with driving a shuttle for patients, a duty that too often triggered his PTSD symptoms of hyper-vigilance and irritability.

Instead, he signed up for vocational rehabilitation, a skills-based training program for those with service-connected disabilities, but that was cited as evidence by the PEB that his PTSD was not severe enough to make him unfit for duty. Yet, in Kinberg's opinion, it was the vocational rehabilitation that gave him a crucial "sense of fulfillment" to endure the yearlong wait for a decision on his case.

He also worried about taking advantage of community events and activities held for wounded warriors, fearing his participation might undermine his diagnosis in the eyes of the PEB.

"I didn?t do any of that stuff because I was already warned," he said, referencing advice given to him by other service members.

"It?s a long, drawn out process," Kinberg said of IDES and remaining on medical hold. "Unless you do something with your time there, it?s a very miserable existence. I know people who are suicidal because they don?t have anything going on in their life and they're just sitting in their room and going to doctor?s appointments."?

In the July Congressional hearing, VA Secretary Eric Shinseki defended the length of the decision process, explaining that much of that time was necessary for wounded service members to convalesce and receive appropriate medical attention.

However, a report on IDES published by the Government Accountability Office in May found significant delays in completing medical examinations; in 2011, only 31 percent of active-duty cases met the 45-day goal. Officials told GAO that case loads were large and that there were not enough doctors to complete paperwork in a timely manner. The report noted that the Army was in the midst of doubling its staffing for medical evaluations to address the delays.

Both Parker and Perry don't want to see timeline goals achieved in spite of getting the process right. However, Perry said, long waits can lead to frustration for service members who have no ability to plan for the future, whether it be lining up civilian employment, enrolling in college, or knowing where their children will attend school in a year.

While the delays receive the most attention, there also appears to be a dangerous disconnect between the wounded and their command in some cases.

The Recovering Warrior Task Force, a panel that gives DOD recommendations on policies related to the treatment of the injured, found in the course of conducting focus groups with wounded service members that they often encountered an "adversarial dynamic ... which distracts them from focusing on healing."?

The task force wrote in a draft report earlier this year that the Army and Marine Corps might consider how to prevent transition staff from behaving in counter-productive ways, including acting or speaking to injured service members "in a demeaning or hostile way, accusing (them) of malingering in the course of their recovery, breeching privacy by discussing medical and personal matters ..."

Kinberg, who was among a handful of combat-wounded sailors in his medical hold unit of 50 people, witnessed that dynamic. Kinberg said his chain of command included activated reservists who had never been deployed and acted at times as though members of the unit were faking injuries.

Despite these troubling experiences, Kinberg is preparing to move on. The internship he secured through vocational rehabilitation has led to a job, which he will begin after being discharged from the Navy this month. Still, he can't quite fathom his experience in the disability retirement system.

"I thought some people weren?t doing something right," he said. "I did everything by the books, by the numbers and still they come back and say, 'Well you?re zero.' "?

"I was somewhat prepared, but I didn?t think it would happen to me."?

Q&A with Husker defensive lineman Chase Rome

Q: You missed all of spring practice with a shoulder injury. When were you finally cleared to resume lifting and practicing?

A: It was something we kind of eased into. Throughout the summer, we incorporated working my hurt shoulder a little more and a little more. Probably a couple weeks before fall camp was the first time I was 100 percent go. We've been working on getting the strength back in it. I'm feeling good now.

Q: How tough was it being away from activities with your teammates in the spring and summer?

A: It was real tough. I like to think of myself as a team guy and I hate watching other people work when I'm just standing there. From a positive perspective, it did give me a chance to almost re-learn the playbook entirely from the outside perspective, which was something I was too young to do before I was injured. I was kind of grateful for that.

Q: Has the playbook for the defensive line changed at all this year under a new DL coach?

A: I always thought that if you played in the same scheme, having a different position coach wouldn't make that much of a difference. I was dead wrong about that. Dead wrong. We're learning some new stuff. It's a lot of little tweaks, but they're important things. It's a lot more aggressive. I feel like we're letting our athletes be athletes a little more. I won't go too much more into it, but I think that's what any football player wants to hear. Just be a football player. Just go. Stop worrying about this or that. Just go play football. That was something really exciting to hear.

Q: How have you seen this defense grow from last year?

A: I think there's a greater sense of accountability among everybody, not just among seniors. I feel like last year we kind of got a little bit divided, and that's something I don't feel like is present this year. Against competition, I guess we'll see against Southern Miss, but I feel good about where we are. We're flying around and we're kind of letting loose and getting comfortable.

Q: What do you mean by ?divided?? Was there a division between seniors and upperclassmen?

A: A little bit. But I don't think it was intentional. I don't think it was anything the seniors did wrong. I just feel like that last year the young guys weren't as OK with stepping up and trying to take hold of things. I feel like right now everyone feels like they're invested. They're a part of the defense and they can control their share. They can step up when they want to, and they have been, and that's great. We need leadership from everybody. I think before it was just seen as a senior thing. I'm glad we've got our mind around that concept.

Q: How do you work at fixing that division between older, established players and younger players? Do the older players have to reach out to the newcomers?

A: I want to be really clear on the fact that I'm not saying the seniors did anything wrong last year. I just feel we didn't really understand accountability and ownership. We waited for coaches to tell us things or tell us to fix things we knew needed fixing anyway. When I say we were divided, I just feel this year everyone has a sense of accountability and a sense of ownership. And that's something we really, really worked on in the offseason with (NU strength coach James) Dobson, with Bo, in our meetings. That was a main point of emphasis, and I think that's something that came through pretty strongly. I think it's something we picked up. I think identifying it is the biggest part of fixing it. Some teams are like that. They just have one person leading and being accountable. I think identifying that problem is the biggest step to fixing it, and after that, it's an everyday thing. It feels more like a team now than since I've been here, and I'm proud of that. I really am.

With mayoral hopefuls mum, other politicians shun Students First ...

Most of the 2013 mayoral contenders are still keeping an arm?s length from a union-backed campaign to tie StudentsFirstNY?s agenda to Mitt Romney?s presidential campaign. But that hasn?t stopped a slew of other political hopefuls from throwing their support behind the effort.

New Yorkers for Great Public Schools, a coalition of public unions, community-based organizations and liberal advocacy groups, has released a list of 33 elected officials and candidates who have signed on to a pledge to refuse support from StudentsFirstNY, which is seeking to advance the education polices started by the Bloomberg administration. The list includes candidates for Manhattan and Brooklyn Borough President, Public Advocate and a slew of City Council members and state legislators.

Noticeably absent are frontrunners in the one race that New Yorkers for Great Public Schools and StudentsFirstNY hope to influence the most: the 2013 mayoral election. Only one prospective candidate, John Liu, has said he?d reject StudentsFirstNY?s support.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said last week she?d be fine accepting their support, as did long-shot Tom Allon. Former Comptroller Bill Thompson was non-committal in his response and?two other candidates, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, have stayed mum on the subject. Neither has responded to repeated requests for comment since last week.

But plenty of other elected officials and candidates for office were willing to speak out against StudentsFirstNY, according to New Yorkers for Great Public Schools. The statements that accompanied a release sent out this afternoon covered a broad range of education issues.

U.S. Congresswoman Nydia Vasquez called on class-size reduction and an end to rent-free charter school co-locations.?State Senator Liz Krueger said that fairer student funding formulas and greater professional support for teachers were ?common sense? reforms. And Councilman Mark Weprin criticized the StudentsFirstNY?s support of standardized testing, which he called a ?scourge.?

There were also plenty of references to a report last week that showed some board members of StudentsFirstNY were actively working to defeat President Obama through fundraising and personal donations. New Yorkers for Great Public Schools, which published the report, has sought to use this link to argue that StudentsFirstNY?s policies would lead to a privatized education system that would threaten jobs and put bottom-line business interests above all else.?

City Councilman Robert Jackson, a candidate for Manhattan Borough President, said the connections were ?alarming and disturbing.? State Senator Eric Adams, a candidate for Brooklyn Borough President, called StudentsFirstNY an ?ALEC-like?organization?, referring to a national group of?politicians, businesses and think-tanks that write and push for conservative legislation.

Glen Weiner, deputy director of StudentsFirstNY, said in a statement that it wasn?t surprising to see some that some elected officials were coming out in support of New Yorkers for Great Public Schools.

?A press release stating the teachers union can buy off or bully a couple of dozen politicians who think the current education system is just fine is hardly news,? Weiner said. ?In fact, it?s one of the reasons StudentsFirstNY was formed.?

Training a dog can be overwhelming to those who are new at it. You can have information overload when you think of all the resources you have at your disposal. Here are some tips and advice to help you get started with effectively training your dog.

TIP! It?s important your dog always has an understanding of right from wrong. This will require firm boundaries from everybody in your house.

In most cases, dogs bite out of fear. This happens when dogs feel frightened, trapped, or threatened. Never use force to train your dog. This may have serious negative consequences, such as your dog biting you. Your dog will feel proud and want to please you as his leader.

TIP! When you are house training a dog, you may want to use a crate. Let the dog out on a regular schedule to make the crate training most effective.

Housebreaking pads normally do more harm than good when house training a puppy or dog. These items will leak and the scent left will have your dog believing this area is suppose to be used to mark his territory. They also make your dog think it?s okay to use anything with a similar shape as a bathroom. It is best to teach dogs that they are to go potty outside only.

TIP! Associate a word with an action and stick to it. You dog will learn to respond to the specific word or words that you choose to represent a desired behavior.

The first step in training a puppy is to make sure he knows his name. Call him by name frequently, and teach him to come when called. These are the preliminary words that your dog need to know. Try to spend a good amount of time with your new dog. When he trusts you, he ends up being more responsive to all sorts of training.

TIP! It?s to be expected that your new puppy will likely have an accident now and then. Clean accidents right away to speed up training.

You can try a little bit of ingenuity if you are going with crate training for your indoor dog or puppy. If the dog doesn?t want to go inside the crate, put a rawhide bone in there and shut the door. Your dog will get excited at the prospect of the treat and soon be eager to enter the crate. After they have entered the crate, be sure to give them praise so they understand that they have done a good thing.

TIP! Make sure you feed your dog healthy food. Too many table scraps can unbalance your dog?s diet.

When it comes to training a puppy, it is not a good idea to provide too much information and training at one time. Remember that all dogs have short attention spans and puppies even more so. If you try to teach too much, he won?t like the training sessions and won?t remember everything. This will only frustrate you over time.

TIP! To learn how to effectively train your dog, you may want to take an obedience class. The trained instructors can help your pup with any issues he may have, including unnecessary barking, chewing, house training and normal obedience issues.

When training your dog, keep track of time during each session. Your dog is going to get bored doing the same thing over and over. Keep first training lessons to 10 minutes or less.

TIP! You want to make sure that you provide your dog a sense of security. If a dog feels threatened, it will likely attack someone or something.

If you will be introducing a new animal, do it slowly. Consider your pet at home before adopting a new one. You need to make sure your pets get along so you can be happy as well.

Where Free-Market Economists Go Wrong - Reason.com

Depressing as it is, politics usually trumps economics. There?s nothing new in that, but free-market advocates ought to learn some lessons and adjust their strategy accordingly.

The politicians who run the government?and think they run the country?are afraid to appear as though they are doing nothing. We saw this when the recession hit. They were particularly worried about seeming to put party above the public good.

As the Wall Street Journal put it back then,

The speed with which Washington hashed out the [stimulus] plan was driven mostly by the drumbeat of bad economic news. Behind the scenes, it was greased by other powerful motivations. Congressional Democrats needed to demonstrate they were capable of results after a year of gridlock. Republican lawmakers, up for re-election, wanted to show sensitivity to voters? economic woes. And the White House didn?t want ?recession? added to its legacy.

Political interest was universally aligned against good economic sense. The politicians could get away with this because most of the public is economically illiterate. The ?seen? overshadows the ?unseen.? Such is how we get economic policy. It?s happening now.

As free-market economists point out, government cannot affirmatively stimulate what we misleadingly call ?the economy.? (It?s not a machine; it?s people using their property to engage in transactions.) All government can do is move money around. To make some people able to spend more it must make other people spend less. Politicians imply that they know who ought to have more and who ought to have less, but beside the obvious injustice of the matter, they simply can?t know.

Economists Fall Short

I said the government can?t affirmatively stimulate the economy, but it can encourage productive activity. How? By not discouraging it. Here is where some free-market economists fall short in shaping the public debate. Too much of what they say is along these lines: ?The economy is fundamentally healthy. Recessions are a necessary correction of errors. So just let the economy work through its current problems. The government need do nothing.?

That message should make advocates of individual liberty squirm because it implies that the market today is essentially as free as it needs to be. For example, a few years ago the news media proclaimed that gasoline prices were at historic highs. In fact, when adjusted for inflation they were not. But the economists pointing this out sounded a little too defensive, as though they were the defending the free market?s honor against its critics. What should we say if next week gasoline does hit a historic high and the anti-market folks blame the free market? I know what I?d say: What free market? (With all the subsidies and regulations on the books, can there possibly be a free market?)

The same defensiveness can be seen whenever a left-statist charges that the gap between rich and nonrich has widened or income mobility has ceased. Whatever the truth of these charges, libertarians shouldn?t react as though the free market?s honor is being assaulted. The critics may think it?s the free market they?re attacking. But?I say again? we have no free market.

Similarly, if economic activity slows down, it can?t be the free market?s fault.

What we have?and have had for a long time?is corporatism, an interventionist system shot through with government-granted privileges mostly for the well-connected?who tend to be rich businesspeople. This system is maintained in a variety of ways: through taxes, subsidies, cartelizing regulations, intellectual ?property? protections, trade restrictions, government-bank collusion, the military-industrial complex, land close-offs, zoning, building codes, restrictions on workers, and more. As a result, people can get rich at the expense of the government?s victims. Even some who have prospered apparently by market means have actually done so through government intervention, such as transportation subsidies and eminent domain. Wealth can be transferred in many ways besides welfare and Medicaid, some of them quite subtle. Most transfers are upward.

Overlooked Facts

?Free-market economists know this, but they often seem to forget it, such as when they indiscriminately defend firms (such as oil and pharmaceutical companies) in today?s corporatist economy. These economists convey the message that since in a free market people get rich and companies get big only by serving consumers, anyone who is rich today and any company that is big today must have gotten that way by serving consumers. The flaw in the argument should be obvious.

Given the corporatist nature of the economy, it is a mistake?as well as strategically foolish?to say the government should do nothing when a recession might be coming on or when recovery is disappointingly sluggish. There?s much it should do?or rather undo. Freedom?s advocates must spell this out in detail, revealing how existing government privilege harms the mass of people who have no political connections. In contrast, when an economist who proclaims his support for the free market says the current economy will fix itself, he brands himself a defender of the statist quo and turns his back on the State?s victims.

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - A spokesman for the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) today (August 18) announced the receipt of confirmation from the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) that all the London Olympic Games' Mainland gold medallists will be joining the upcoming visit to Hong Kong.

We are extremely grateful to the COC for their support, the spokesman said.

The three-day visit will start from August 24, covering the "Mainland Olympic Gold Medallists Sports Demonstrations", an exchange session with youth uniformed groups as well as the "Mainland Olympic Gold Medallists Extravaganza" on August 25.

Tickets of the Extravaganza are still available for purchase by members of the public at 43 URBTIX outlets, on the Internet via the URBTIX websiteï¼??www.urbtix.hk), or via the credit card telephone booking hotline 2111 5999. Audience will have the chance to get up close with the gold medallists.

The delegation will leave Hong Kong on the afternoon of August 26.
