Canadian dollar flat and quiet as investors watch U.S. talks

TORONTO (Reuters) - The Canadian dollar was largely unchanged against its U.S. counterpart in quiet trading on Thursday as investors wait for developments in the U.S. budget talks to avert a fiscal cliff and square positions ahead of the year-end.

Markets have been in limbo since last week when President Barack Obama and U.S. lawmakers suspended talks until after Christmas on avoiding $600 billion of spending cuts and tax increases that some economists say threaten to send the economy back into recession.

"We're starting off very quietly as we did yesterday," said Matt Perrier, a director of foreign exchange sales at BMO Capital Markets.

"We may see some year-end things that corporates need to get done, that will hopefully give us some movement, and we've also got the whole fiscal cliff situation coming down to the wire, so there is potential for things to move, we'll just have to wait and see."

At 8:43 a.m. (1343 GMT), the Canadian dollar stood at C$0.9921 versus the U.S. dollar, or $1.0080, just slightly weaker than Monday's North American session close at C$0.9913 versus the U.S. dollar, or $1.0088.

North American markets were closed on December 25 and most Canadian markets remained shut on Wednesday for Boxing Day, so Thursday was the first day of normal trade since markets closed on Monday, Christmas Eve.

Efforts to prevent the U.S. economy from going over a "fiscal cliff" stirred back to life on Wednesday with less than a week to go before potentially disastrous tax hikes and spending cuts kick in at the New Year.

In a sign that there may be a way through deadlock in Congress, Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner urged the Democrat-controlled Senate to act to pull back from the cliff and offered to at least consider any bill the upper chamber produced.

President Barack Obama will try to revive budget crisis talks - which stalled last week - when he returns to Washington on Thursday after cutting short his Christmas holiday in Hawaii.

BMO's Perrier said he doesn't expect much movement in the Canadian dollar as 2012 draws to a close, given the tight range it has traded in recent weeks.

"It will probably close around these levels, in the C$0.9850 and C$0.9950 area. There is certainly some uncertainty with respect to what happens in the U.S. - if we get a fiscal cliff deal or we don't see a fiscal cliff deal - that could create some movement into tomorrow or Monday," he said.

"But given the price action in the last couple of weeks, I'd think we'll probably close (2012) around where we are now."

Canadian government bond prices edged lower along the longer end of the curve. The two-year bond was down 4.5 Canadian cents, yielding 1.147 percent, while the benchmark 10-year bond fell 3 Canadian cents to yield 1.822 percent.

Mentall Illness - The path we should consider

Maybe something I say will impact people, but I doubt it.? Christmas of 2012 will be remembered something like this:? Parents crying around the tree, trying to reconcile why their son or daughter will not be home for Christmas this year.? This past Friday dozens of innocent children met Cassie Bernall, Rachel Joy Scott, Anthony Scott II and others to name a few of the many children that have died because of senseless, selfish human acts.? Since the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 many children have died and even more unfortunately we have said, ?what a tragedy, how could this happen.? ??We hear the news media saying these people are mentally ill but what is mental illness really?

We may know a family member who is depressed or a family member who suffers from Alzheimer?s or even amnesia.? Technically, they are considered ?mentally ill.? However, what mechanism makes a person think, ??I?m going to head to my mom?s house and shoot her, proceed to head to the place she use to work, pick up a gun, aim it at someone, look at their crying face, and proceed to pull a trigger, discharge a bullet , watch it hit them and then watch them die. Only to repeat the same motion dozens of times again?? In the average American mind we get on Facebook and talk about unions and how teachers are horrible.? People make death threats towards the governor because he is going to change something we do not like.? School children go on Facebook and bully their class mates, they play violent video games, and they might even use drugs.

The commonality amidst all of this is that the behavior is ?grooming.? It is practice, a repetition, a distancing from reality.? People often remark, ?I go fishing to get my mind off this or that.? For the adolescent mind, it processes differently due to a difference in neurotransmitters chemicals. As much as we want to believe behavior is simply environmental, that is only one factor that determines the bio-chemical makeup of how the cognitive process works.? What are the basic building blocks of the brain?? What is wrong in that gray matter that makes these things happen?

Are people born mentally ill or do they grow into it?? Simply put, the brain is a vast interconnection of devices that sent electrical signals from point A to point B through a piece of the mind called a Synapse.? Through these synapses flow chemicals called neurotransmitters and these neurotransmitters make things happen.? For example a computer understands 0 and 1 and these signals are determined by simply sending electrical impulses through a processor.? To under simplify the brain it sends 0?s, 1?s, 2?s,3?s, 4?s, 5?s etc.? Either GO or STOP.? The brain has ON neurotransmitters and chemicals called neuromodulators, and inhibitory neurotransmitters.?? The reason why science says ?we are what we eat.? is because it is absolutely true.

Science also states they do not know the exact reason why that atypical antipsychotics work.? They simply offer a pill and hope it mutes and inhibits a mentally ill person just enough to make them compliant.? These medications put these people into an inhibitory fog so their abnormal brain chemistry can be modified. This works fine until the drugs are stopped. After all, the mentally ill can surely afford a prescription that costs $900 a monthly on their minimum wage job right?

Let?s start with something simple called Inflammation to understand the general concept. ?Asthma for example causes a person the impossibility of breathing. The air way swells and closes off and swells.? Without a steroid to stop the inflammation they will probably die.

Inflammation also occurs in the brain, but it is much less likely to be noticed. Why?? Well, we do not have the ability to take a look at our brain daily.? Do we know what to look for?? When inflammation continues long enough it can cause tissue death or destruction.? Generally, when this happens it will appear as a brain lesion. Tumors, trauma, etc. also cause these lesions.

So, let?s say for example the part of the brain that is responsible for making the inhibitory neurotransmitter that tells the brain to ?cool it? before it acts out on aggression abruptly dies then what?? Rage can build. What if there is an issue on the side of the brain responsible for your ?imagination.? And that imagination runs away and there is no functional part of the brain able to stop that?

Society says, let?s medicate with a very dangerous class of drugs called benzodiazepines.? With long term use of benzodiazepines there is an apparent decrease in the efficacy of GABA-A receptors (these receptors are responsible for ?calming the brain.? ? the efficacy goes down as a method of tolerance it is thought.? So, when a person abruptly stops taking their medication this ?reduced? transmitter isn?t stopping the compulsion portion of the brain. It?s a ticket into hyper mode and over-drive.

I?m not going to go into a hundred page paper of the brain and these chemicals but what I do want you to gather is that the medical community needs to ask this, ?Where do neurotransmitters come from.? The reason why is this, if you put someone on a drug that can cause their mind to die, and become more dangerous how can you ensure they remain on it forever?? If you are what you eat, doesn?t logic create the idea that certain nutrients, vitamins, foods you eat become a part of you and help you regenerate these missing links?

A great example is that of B vitamins.? These vitamins are all water soluble and so if you drink a ton of caffeine (that makes your body loose a ton of water.) isn?t it fair to say you are at some point going to become deficient in B vitamins?? The rate you lose them is much faster than you can gain them by eating food too.? B vitamins (along with a long list of other amino acids, fatty acids, etc.) also modulate and influence neurotransmitters and inflammation.

Let?s also consider that certain psycho-tropic drugs diminish these levels of vitamins as well. Zyprexa is a popular drug used to ?control? schizophrenic patients.? It is also known to lower Vitamin D.? Vitamin D is both a hormone and a vitamin that is fat soluble.? Vitamin D is part of a cycle called the krebs which several important minerals are modulated.? Vitamin D3 is made from your skin absorbing sunlight, or perhaps in your diet etc.? However, some people can?t absorb vitamin D properly due to other bio chemical imbalances in their body and as a result it diminishes.? D is needed for your body to absorb Calcium and Calcium needs Magnesium to modulate it.? Why is this important?? Well, Magnesium is also important in the brain to help clear out Fluoride from the Pinal gland.? Calcium triggers the release of adrenaline into the blood stream.? Magnesium is responsible to help up regulate GABA (that neurotransmitter that helps calm.) and all of this need to balance out.? Zinc binds to Magnesium and lowers it; Fluoride binds to Magnesium and causes it to be used up. Everything must ?balance? but for simple discussion, put someone on a drug that lowers vitamin D and you can start to lower their ability for their brain to work properly.

This school shooting was a horrific event and it is tragic that so many families will be without their children this Christmas and many to come.? I also hope I have outlined very briefly just how one or two aspects of science can cause some serious stuff to happen in the mind.? However, this is why it is nearly impossible for a Psychiatrist to make a proper determination of a patient?s mental status with a 15 minute interview and a prescription.

I would propose we seriously look at any person who has mental illness with a much closer eye. Not to humiliate or violate but to be able to better help those who truly need it, before they act out and do any more harm to anyone else or others.? I certainly appreciate everyone in the United States their opinions and bitterness towards this event.? I also think that there are some people better suited to address the issue.

Without conscious effort towards truly improving the mind of the mentally ill, it will be truly impossible to ever end the violence. You could lock up every single weapon in the world, but when these people grow psychotic they also have the power of adrenaline raging through them and become almost super human.? This is why there are many instances of one person being abnormally strong.? Thus, if they want to gain a weapon, they will and nothing is going to stop it aside from either treating it or allowing the rest of the country to be paranoid about it forever.

Hopefully this message will be spread and spread to the decision makers of mental health patients. I pray for our country and hope doctors will run simple tests on patients that are suspect. We live in a country with a great healthcare system and how would it harm to check for certain missing links via blood tests?? I know every doctor I have asked about this simply replies, ?I have no interest, or knowledge? in this area.? There are numerous ways to cross-check for problems by using very inexpensive blood tests.? We can then obtain a picture into the human body and determine at the biochemical level if things are ok or not.? Probably with less side effects and more accurate diagnoses.

Until that school of thought changes though, we are simply treating symptoms and not disease. If we never treat the root cause of mental illness then we can never ensure our freedom from harm. Please pass this along to everyone on your list.

The Top 7... Gaming headlines that defined 2012 | GamesRadar

I think Kickstarters are by far the most significant news and headlines that have shaken the industry, and provided those promised games and projects deliver, it could shape an entirely new direction for the industry.

That, and I honestly am still on the fence that the Wii U can be considered next gen. Slice it however you want, but aside from that tablet controller, (WHICH is yet to be seen if it can truly reach the potential and innovation it promises, far more promising was the motion control of the wii... and look how that worked.) there isn't really that much next gen in that machine more so than just catching up to the existing machines. HD graphics, Working online with no friend codes? sure, that's great for people that only owned a wii, but for anyone with a 360 or a PS3, that's 7-8 year old news... We'll see though, i guess.

Also, no matter where you sit on the whole ME3 Ending thing, it was still very damn big news, and it was unprecedent, so I definitely vote that as a runner up.

Toni Braxton on the Mend From Lupus Flair Up, Hospitalization

toni braxton lupus Toni Braxton on the Mend From Lupus Flair Up, HospitalizationToni Braxton is on the mend following her sudden hospitalization for lupus-induced blood clots, which can be life threatening. The R&B singer has been struggling with the disease for the past couple of years. There is no known cure.

Lupus is an auto-immune disease that is genetically related. Braxton, 45, revealed two years ago that she had contracted the disease.

Her uncle died from lupus-related health problems and her brother also suffers from the illness, she said. Braxton has also struggled with financial difficulties, which she said are related to the disease.

While there is no cure there are treatments to minimize the symptoms, and Braxton tweeted that she was responding to medication. ?I?m in the hospital for health issues related to Lupus & Blood clots, I will be home soon.?

Lupus symptoms can be triggered by any number of factors including stress. Lady Gaga also revealed that she, too, is predisposed to lupus and is trying to keep the disease in check.

?It?s more making sure that I reduce stress in my life to make sure I don?t develop [the disease],? Gaga said in June 2010. ?I make much more of an effort now to minimize the drama or the stress. I take care of myself.? She is ?borderline positive? for the disease.

Gaga, 26, revealed that her aunt died from lupus.

No two cases of lupus are exactly alike, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms may come on suddenly or slowly, may be mild or severe, and may be temporary or permanent.

Among the most common symptoms are fatigue and fever, joint pain, stiffness and swelling, butterfly-shaped rash on the face that covers the cheeks and bridge of the nose and skin lesions that appear or worsen with sun exposure.

Rising Stock Prices Don't Mean Much in a HyperInflation Environment

The stock market has been rising steadily in the United States since 2008. Great news right? Not necessarily.

During the German Weimer Republic stock prices rose as well. But, what prices due to hyperinflation rose faster than the rate that stocks rose.

The same thing could happen in the United States. If we go through a period of hyperinflation, stock prices will go up, but selling a share of stock won't get you as much as it once did.

Michelle Wie tied for lead in Mexico

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) ? Michelle Wie shot a 6-under 66 on Thursday for a share of the first-round lead in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational with Angela Stanford and Candie Kung.

The 2009 tournament winner for the first of her two LPGA Tour victories, Wie birdied the first two holes at Guadalajara Country Club and opened the back nine with four straight birdies in the bogey-free round that matched her best score of the year.

"It's nice to come back to a golf course where we have a lot of good memories," Wie said. "I think the fans are really fun when they come to watch, and I really hope they come to watch. The food is great, everything about this place is great. It's always really fun to come back here."

She got into the 36-player field on a sponsor invitation after failing to qualify.

"It's been a really difficult year," Wie said. "It's been the hardest year I've had so far, but I think the guacamole is helping this week, and I think that might be the changing point, so I'm going to keep eating it and hopefully it will help."

Stanford won the inaugural event in 2008. She is trying to win for the second time this year.

"Well, it would mean quite a bit," Stanford said. "I think any time you can win multiple times in a year that's a pretty good year. So, that and the opportunity to when here again would be pretty cool."

Kung is playing for the fifth straight week.

"I was pretty tired, I got here on Monday, midnight and actually slept all the way through Tuesday, and yesterday I slept pretty good, too," Kung said. I went to bed at 7 and I actually feel really good today. I feel like a new person after the last four weeks."

Second-ranked Stacy Lewis, coming off her tour-leading fourth victory of the season Sunday in Japan, was a stroke back along with Inbee Park, Cristie Kerr, So Yeon Ryu and Karine Icher.

Lewis has a 58-point lead over Park with two events left in the player of the year points race, putting her in position to become the first American to win the award since Beth Daniel in 1994.

Lewis and Park were paired together.

"We actually hadn't played together this year," Lewis said. "It was fun to play together when we are both playing really well. It was a fun day to kind of see how our games stack up. Obviously, by the scores, our games are pretty close."

Ochoa opened with a 71. The Mexican star won 27 LPGA Tour titles before retiring at age 28 in 2010. She missed the event last year before the birth of son Pedro in December.

Suzann Pettersen, making her first start since winning consecutive events in South Korea and Taiwan, was four strokes back at 70 in a group that included top-ranked Yani Tseng.

Defending champion Catriona Matthew had a 71.

iPhone Users Tell You Why Not Need a SLR Camera

A lot of people are dreaming of having a SLR camera because it seems that SLR equals to professional and high-quality photograph. However, when they are blindly pursuing the expensive SLR camera, they ignore the actual meaning of photography. From the experiences of iPhone camera users, we can learn that if you combine the correct opinion of photograpghy with excellent post-production, you can take good shooting as well as SLR camera even with an iPhone.

SLR camera is not a necessary for photography. The maximum value of the SLR is to play the initiative of the photographer. The mertering , lighting, zoom and shutter, all can express the unique idea of a photographyer. But the actual situation is that photographer holds a SLR camera in hand and makes use of the auto settings to take shootings. It is the camera itself which takes shootings, not you. It has not difference with an simple iPhone.

Another important equipment of a SLR camera is the lens. A high-quality lens is very expensive. But the lens is not the whole. With the development of digital technology, the quality of iPhone camera is also developed year after year. The new iPhone 5 is designed with enhanced HD video recording features. Moreover, an excellent photograph must be the one which could express what you want to show, not just high definition.

A SLR camera is in big size which makes photographers feel a little trouble. What's more, when you take a good picture but can't share with your friends in the first time, you may will lack a funny. However, if you have an iPhone, you can shoot whatever and wherever you want. You can share your funny things right now.

You may say that iPhone camera has a lot of shortages such as the exposure, zoom, mertering and so on. Yes, we should admit. After all, it is not a professional camera. However, these effects can be revised by some applications such as photoshop. Even though you take shootings with professional cameras, you should make some editions. Post-production is an important step for photography. In iPhone, it is designed with some smart applications which could help you make some editions just with simple clicks. After you take a good view into pictures, you can quickly hand it with the smart function and then share it with others through Facebook.

Of course, I don't say SLR is not good. What I mean is when we have't eough money to buy a professional camera, we can also take good shootings with simple equipments like iPhone. Expressing your most real idea with the simpliest method, that's the real meaning of photography. Only pursuing spending money on expensive SLR cameras will makes you go far away from photography. Sometimes, a good photograph just need a simple iPhone and a good editor.

If you also love recording videos by your iPhone, I guess this Mac Video Converter will help you a lot. When you want to convert mov to mpeg format for other use, it could help you convert mov to mpeg mac at ease. It also can work as good video editor which provides you various special features.

For photography lovers, when we haven't a SLR camera, let's make good use of our iPhone camera.

iZettle launches on EE in the UK, lets merchants take plastic with smartphones, tabs

iZettle has just launched its Android and iOS payment platform on EE in the UK, giving small businesses a cheap way to get paid through Visa, American Express, Diner's Club and Mastercard. For a £20 fee in EE stores, you can grab the scanner (shown above) and start accepting charge card payments through your iPhone, iPad and certain Android devices with no other fees except for the usual merchant grab -- 2.75 percent per transaction in this case. Sales can even be keyed in manually if you don't want the scanner, and the company claims the system is quick and "totally secure." So, if you're tired of chasing down that deadbeat client who keeps saying "too bad you don't take Amex," hit the PR after the jump.

Worst Company for Customer Service: Comcast

Worst Company for Customer Service: Comcast When we asked you which companies were the worst at customer service, we expected to hear all kinds: tech companies, communications companies, banks, retailers, restaurants. We didn't expect you to weigh in so heavily with communications companies though, most of which have virtual monopolies, so they get away with whatever they choose. After we collected your nominations, we looked at the five worst companies for customer service, and put them to an overall vote. Now we're back to crown the worst of the worst.

Worst Company for Customer Service: Comcast Voting was tight all weekend, and many of you straight out noted that deciding which company has the worst customer service was more difficult than choosing the best of any category. In the end however it was Comcast that took the top spot with over 32% of the votes cast.

Behind Comcast in second place was PayPal, taking the silver with over 22% of the overall vote. AT&T made a respectable showing in third place, pulling in over 20% of the votes cast. The real fight was for fourth and fifth place, which was decided by just over 100 votes: Time Warner Cable edged out Verizon for fourth place with the former earning close to 13% of the overall vote, and the latter pulling in closer to 12%.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it's not because we hate it?it's because it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest, but if you have a favorite, we want to hear about it. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

Gold Fields' KDC East miners yet to resume work

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Gold Fields said on Tuesday striking workers at its KDC East operations in South Africa are yet to return to work despite the company issuing an ultimatum for the employees to resume work or face dismissal.

South Africa is struggling to resolve violent unrest that has poisoned industrial relations and marred its image overseas.

"So far we have no turnout at KDC East but the final deadline is this afternoon," said company spokesman Sven Lunsche.

He said the company would provide another update at 4:00 p.m. local time (1400 GMT). About 8,500 workers at the KDC East were issued an ultimatum to start returning to work with the night shift on Monday and the morning and afternoon shifts on Tuesday.

With the government now pressing miners to return to work, more companies are resorting to hard-ball negotiating tactics to end wildcat strikes. Some have been successful.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd, the world's No.3 gold producer, told striking South African miners on Monday to return to work by Wednesday or face dismissal.

Anglo American Platinum, the world's largest platinum producer, was the first to take a stand, sacking 12,000 workers at its Rustenburg operations earlier this month.

Amplats' Rustenburg mines have been shut since Sept 12. It said on Thursday it would delay the dismissal process at Union and Amandelbult, where it employs 20,500 people. It also said it was open to discussing the reinstatement of the sacked workers with unions.

The strikes spread into other mining industries after starting in the platinum mines. At Lonmin Plc's Marikana mine in Rustenburg police shot dead 34 miners in one day in August, the most violent police action in South Africa's post-apartheid history.

A government-appointed commission investigating the "Marikana massacre" heard opening statements from police, unions and Lonmin on Monday.

Computer viruses 'rampant' on hospital medical devices, say ...

(NaturalNews) All the technological advancements taking place within the medical system today are supposed to make it easier and more efficient for doctors, nurses, and hospital staff to monitor and assist patients. But according to a number of medical device experts that spoke at a recent meeting of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Security & Privacy Advisory Board, hospital medical devices are often so infected with viruses and malware that their reliability and effectiveness is questionable at best.

Just like personal computers that are constantly at risk of becoming infected with viruses, spyware, malware, and other harmful files, medical devices that compound intravenous drugs and nutrition, for instance, or that monitor women with high-risk pregnancies, are also at risk. Because of their proprietary nature and narrowly-specified license and approval guidelines, medical devices are actually more at risk of catching computer viruses because they are often outdated, unprotected, and unable to be modified or upgraded.

"Conventional malware is rampant in hospitals because of medical devices using unpatched operating systems," says Kevin Fu, an expert in medical device security and computer scientist at the University of Michigan and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. "There's little recourse for hospitals when a manufacturer refuses to allow OS updates or security patches."

This refusal by manufacturers to maintain hospital equipment with the latest anti-virus and malware protection software is largely a result of fears over how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will treat updated products within the regulatory paradigm. There is much confusion, in other words, about how already approved and regulated medical devices are to be properly maintained and updated with respect to the law, which is putting patients at serious risk.

"We worry about situations where blood gas analyzers, compounders, radiology equipment, nuclear-medical delivery systems, could become compromised to where they can't be used, or they become compromised to the point where their values are adjusted without the software known," adds Mark Olson, Chief Information Security Officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, which has seen its own share of infected medical equipment.

In many cases, hospitals routinely have to shut down certain medical devices for days at a time in order to get them cleaned up, as well as to ensure that they have not also infected the hospital's private intranet system. Once a particular machine is back in order, another one typically requires service as well, which creates a never-ending cycle of having to continually disinfect vital hospital equipment of potentially disastrous software bugs.

The FDA is reportedly in the process of reviewing how it handles software updates for approved medical devices, but the problem is expected to continue indefinitely until a comprehensive workaround is effectively implemented. In the meantime, patients will have to simply hope that technology staff are regularly monitoring medical devices to ensure proper functionality, and quickly addressing any problems that might arise.

The problem is also being exacerbated by clinicians who bring their own devices in to work, including tablet devices and smartphones that easily link up to the hospital network. Though it is often more convenient for doctors and nurses to use their own devices rather than official equipment, the risk of spreading technological viral infections increases as a result.

Heidi Montag wouldn't repeat extreme surgeries

By Jesse Spero, Access Hollywood

Heidi Montag?s life has taken a drastic turn over the years. After skyrocketing to fame on ?The Hills? and making headlines for undergoing 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day in 2010, the former reality star is happy to be living her life out of the spotlight.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: From On-Set Romance To Real-Life Love: Hollywood?s Hottest Co-Star Couples!

The 26-year-old stopped by "Access Hollywood Live" on Thursday, where she dished about her now infamous choice to go under the knife and come back up with a whole new look. But does Heidi regret the cosmetic work she had done?

?I would never do it again and I never recommend it for anyone,? Heidi told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Stars Who Have Gone Under The Knife

?I was definitely way in over my head. I?m glad it worked out and you can?t really reverse time,? she said of her decision to undergo numerous procedures. ?I kind of wanted a few enhancements and then it kind of got out of hand. I wasn?t told really the repercussions and what would happen, emotionally and psychically and the pain I would be in. I was kind of in shock.?

Heidi told Billy and Kit that she has not gone under the knife since and doesn?t think she?ll have more plastic surgery in the future.

?I haven?t done anything. I?m not sure if I would have done anything again,? she explained. ?I just focus now on being healthy, alive and strong. If you?re not beautiful inside it really doesn?t matter what you look like outside, and I think I kind of lost track of that.?

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Heidi Montag & Spencer Pratt

Adding, ?I should have just been reflecting on my heart.?

Heidi also opened up about husband and reality TV partner in crime, Spencer Pratt, who was not happy about her choice to have the surgeries.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: They Dated? Surprising Former Couples!

?He was very against it. That was a big issue in our marriage,? she told Billy and Kit. ?[But,] we?re good, we?ve been married for four years and we?ve been together for six?-- in Hollywood that?s ancient! Until death do us part I would say. I honestly love him more and more every day, I laugh more, we enjoy each other more, especially taking a step out of the spotlight. We?ve really been able to enjoy each other without all the chaos.?

Heidi, who is hosting the third anniversary party at Crazy Horse III in Las Vegas on Friday, does have one regret about not being in the spotlight.

?I only miss the money,? she admitted. ?If we would have saved our money, it would have been better.?

She said that expenses like ?clothes, hair and makeup, managers, publicists, agents and lawyers? took a toll on their bank accounts.

But how much does Heidi estimate that she and Spencer lost over the years?

?I?ve never really counted, so I?m not sure [how much we lost], a lot ... over a million or so,? she estimated.
The former reality star said she now lives in a property owned by Spencer?s family, which has helped the pair save money.

?I?m eating and healthy ... a lot of our expenses are minimized,? she told Billy and Kit, explaining that Spencer could have a new career in his future, possibly in politics. ?It?s his last semester at USC for a political science degree ...?I?m not sure if he wants to go into politics, but I think he?s interested in certain areas. He?s more of a behind the scenes kind of guy these days.?

Looking back, Heidi said she and Spencer lost their way during their rise to fame and after having ?a self-awakening? moment, they are back to their former selves.

?I?ve really just taken these years since ?The Hills? and kind of been on my own journey? we both just kind of stepped back and have been able to reflect on who we?ve been, where we want to go and who want to be and what we want in our lives and it wasn?t the path we were going down. So we just kind of changed back to who we originally were,? she told Billy and Kit. ?We?re very grounded and humbled and money and fame and the fast life, you don?t really know how you?re going to react to it. I certainly never thought I would become the person that I was.?

Adding, ?It was quite the whirlwind and I?m happy to be out of it.?

Imagine the Drunken Emails You'll Send With a Beer Can Keyboard [Video]

For really no other reason than they could (and to probably sell booze) the folks over at Robofun created an Arduino-powered computer keyboard that uses cans of Staropramen beer instead of plastic keys. Users at the Webstock conference where it was unveiled simply had to gently tap each can like they were using an on-screen keyboard to register a keystroke. More »

Dempsey's 2 goals help send US past Guatemala 3-1

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) ? Clint Dempsey is precisely the kind of scrappy player that Jurgen Klinsmann covets on his teams, an attacker who is willing to throw his body around for the greater good.

On Tuesday night, the rest of the United States team played just like him.

Dempsey had a pair of goals and assisted on Carlos Bocanegra's equalizer, and the U.S. finally showed some of the gritty, proactive style Klinsmann has been preaching to rally past Guatemala 3-1 and reach next year's final round of World Cup qualifying.

"They understood the moment," said Klinsmann, who has eschewed the defensive style embraced by former U.S. coach Bob Bradley for one predicated on always moving forward.

"We expected a very difficult qualifying campaign, and that's what this is," Klinsmann said. "We made clear we're the number one team in this group and the next round will be harder."

Facing their first elimination game in qualifying since 2000 and only second in 23 years, the Americans needed merely a draw to advance to the six-team finals in North and Central America and the Caribbean. The final round also will include Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and Jamaica.

After Carlos Ruiz put Guatemala ahead in the fifth minute, Dempsey set up Bocanegra's goal in the 10th minute, then scored in the 18th and 36th to help the U.S. (4-1-1) ? seeking its seventh straight World Cup appearance ? top its semifinal group with 13 points.

"We're excited to get to the next round," said Dempsey, whose 30 international goals are tied with Brian McBride for third-most in American history. "But we know we need to step up our game."

Guatemala, which has never appeared in a World Cup, needed only a tie to advance, but was eliminated when Dane Richards scored two goals late in the second half in Jamaica's 4-1 win over Antigua and Barbuda. Guatemala and Jamaica were both 3-2-1 for 10 points apiece, but the Reggae Boyz overtook Guatemala on goal difference, plus-3 to plus-1.

Guatemala coach Ever Hugo Almeida declined to attend a postgame news conference.

"This was my last game," the 33-year-old Ruiz said. "I want to thank all the team, my family, my fans in Guatemala for all their support. It hurts not to go to a World Cup as a player but I will try to be with my national team in any other ways."

The U.S. dictated the pace from the opening minute, appearing far more aggressive than it did while struggling to a 2-1 victory over Antigua on a muddy cricket pitch last Friday.

Still, Los Chapines caused tension when they scored in the opening minutes.

Jose Contreras took possession in the midfield and sent a looping pass ahead to Ruiz, who managed to beat Bocanegra to the ball as Geoff Cameron was caught upfield. Ruiz rounded goalkeeper Tim Howard and side-footed the ball into the goal.

As if a harbinger, Ruiz appeared to hurt himself seconds after scoring.

He reached out to steady himself on the electronic signage near the field, and may have sliced his hand. He grimaced and immediately began shaking it while a trainer rushed out to tend to him.

The tying goal came just a few minutes later.

Sporting KC midfielder Graham Zusi, playing in his home stadium, sent a corner kick arcing into the penalty area, and Dempsey got just enough of it at the near post to redirect to Bocanegra, who was left alone by Manuel Leon near the far post and easily found the back of the net.

It was Bocanegra's 14th goal with the national team, moving him past Marcelo Balboa for the most among American defenders. It also generated a roar from a sellout crowd of 16,947 that would have been much larger if officials could have sold standing-room tickets.

"We were never going to give up today," Bocanegra said. "We knew were going to get goals quickly and we got three of them."

The second came after Ruiz sent a header over the crossbar, and the American came on the counterattack. The ball was pushed ahead to Eddie Johnson on the wing, and he found Dempsey cutting to the net ahead of defender Jonathan Lopez, his goal giving the U.S. a 2-1 lead.

Johnson picked up an assist to go with the two goals he scored against Antigua in his first international appearance in two years.

Guatemala had a couple of other good scoring chances later in the half, including a shot by Contreras from a sharp angle that Howard knocked away, and a breakaway on which Ruiz was called for a foul on defender Steve Cherundolo near the top of the penalty area.

Cherundolo tried to shake hands with Ruiz, who was having none of it.

"We were just discussing what we were going to do after the game," Cherundolo said, smiling.

The U.S. pressure paid off again in the 36th minute, when Michael Bradley popped a pass over the sprawled-out Jerez and Dempsey tapped the ball across. Dempsey nearly had a hat trick when he just missed on a header early in the second half.

"It felt good after we got off to a slow start," Dempsey said. "It helps your confidence to get a couple of goals."

Failing to qualify for the World Cup would have been devastating for the U.S., still trying to regain the confidence it had when reaching the 2002 quarterfinals. The final round starts Feb. 6.

"I think it's always better when you have very meaningful games and you have to prove yourself," Klinsmann said. "When there's something at stake, like a World Cup qualifier, they know they have to be spot on."

NOTES: Klinsmann said he's not sure how he'll juggle his roster between qualifying and next summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup, the regional championship. ... Dempsey received a yellow card for diving in second-half stoppage time. ... The Americans likely will play an exhibition at Russia on Nov. 14 in their final game this year. ... Bocanegra joined Cameron at center back, Michael Parkhurst took over on the left and Clarence Goodson was benched in the only American lineup changes from Friday. .. Defender Joe Corona made his first competitive appearance for the U.S.as a 90th-minute substitute, tying him to the American national team. He also had been eligible to play for Mexico. ... The Reggae Boyz needed to make up a three-goal difference on Guatemala in a victory to advance, and Richards' goals in the 78th and 88th minutes at Kingston allowed them to move forward.

Enviro News Wrap: Solar Energy Zones; NatGas-bridge fuel or Clean Energy Blockade; Disney Adopts Sustainable Paper, and more?

The Latest Environmental News HeadlinesGlobalWarmingisReal contributor Anders Hellum-Alexander wraps-up and comments on the climate and environmental news headlines for the past week:

  • Obama and Romney have very different approaches to energy and our environment. Obama is a pragmatist and realizes that we have to use all energy sources, especially in the immediate future, Romney literally said he does not care about our environment and would ignore it while in office. One of the examples of Obama?s leadership on renewable energy is how he opened up, through the Department of the Interior,?285,000 acres of public land comprised of 17 ?renewable energy zones? for renewable energy projects.
  • Natural gas is extolled as the ?Bridge to the Future.? The future is clean and renewable energy. So?what if the investment in natural gas is?crowding out investment in that Clean and Renewable future???Oil and Coal companies don?t talk about how their product is running out and how the future will?inevitably?be coal and oil free. Natural gas is a blockade not a bridge fuel, it is just another dirty energy source.
  • Some climate scientists?link specific drastic weather events to climate change. With the crazy weather the world has?witnessed?all over the globe?people think that the link is true.
  • Democrats are??progressive,? until the coal interest in their State reigns them in.? This is also part of the reason why we do not have a national policy on greenhouse has emissions.
  • The Koch brothers are buying influence in the state of Washington. The brothers want state environmental laws repealed, leaving weaker federal standards.
  • Apparently the Koch brothers were lured over to the dark side of politics by a man named Rich Fink. His name means Wealth and Being Disgraced. Mr. Fink convinced the brothers in 2009 that they were the only things standing in the way of Obama ruining America with regulation. They have taken their cause far and wide,?turning their company into an anti-Obama machine.
  • Disney was targeted by Rainforest Action Network (RAN) in 2011 for using paper from threatened forests. Now Disney is shaking hands with RAN on a new agreement to shift their paper supply.
  • People in Nigeria are suing Chevron for ruining their lives. Shell operations in Nigeria have been dirty both Environmentally and Politically.
  • You can?t guarantee that an oil pipeline wont leak or break. So let?s reduce the number of massive pipelines and not approve any more, like the Keystone XL pipeline for the Canadian Tar Sands.
  • Solar in Germany is very straightforward in cost, in the US there are extra layers of costs. In the US only half of the cost of getting solar on your home goes to hardware, profits, and labor.
  • Solyndra is trying to?sue Chinese solar panel manufacturer Suntech for unfair competition?resulting in the bankruptcy of their business. It?s getting real in the global solar panel manufacturing industry and this was kind of predictable. Why is it such a big deal that China under-priced us on goods, don?t they do that with most of our products? Why is it such a big deal now?
