Pakistan stops NATO supplies after deadly raid (Reuters)

YAKKAGHUND, Pakistan (Reuters) ? NATO helicopters and fighter jets attacked two military outposts in northwest Pakistan Saturday, killing as many as 28 troops and plunging U.S.-Pakistan relations deeper into crisis.

Pakistan shut down NATO supply routes into Afghanistan - used for sending in nearly half of the alliance's land shipments - in retaliation for the worst such incident since Islamabad uneasily allied itself with Washington following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

Islamabad also said it had ordered the United States to vacate a drone base in the country, but a senior U.S. official said Washington had received no such request and noted that Pakistan had made similar eviction threats in the past, without following through.

NATO and U.S. officials expressed regret about the deaths of the Pakistani soldiers, indicating the attack may have been an error; but the exact circumstances remained unclear.

"Senior U.S. civilian and military officials have been in touch with their Pakistani counterparts from Islamabad, Kabul and Washington to express our condolences, our desire to work together to determine what took place, and our commitment to the U.S.-Pakistan partnership which advances our shared interests, including fighting terrorism in the region," said White House national security council spokesman Tommy Vieter.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar spoke by telephone, as did General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Pakistani Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

The NATO-led force in Afghanistan confirmed that NATO aircraft had probably killed Pakistani soldiers in an area close to the Afghan-Pakistani border.

"Close air support was called in, in the development of the tactical situation, and it is what highly likely caused the Pakistan casualties," said General Carsten Jacobson, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

He added he could not confirm the number of casualties, but ISAF was investigating. "We are aware that Pakistani soldiers perished. We don't know the size, the magnitude," he said.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said the killings were "an attack on Pakistan's sovereignty," adding: "We will not let any harm come to Pakistan's sovereignty and solidarity."

Pakistan's Foreign Office said it would take up the matter "in the strongest terms" with NATO and the United States, while army chief Kayani said steps would be taken to respond "to this irresponsible act."

"A strong protest has been launched with NATO/ISAF in which it has been demanded that strong and urgent action be taken against those responsible for this aggression."

Two military officials said up to 28 troops had been killed and 11 wounded in the attack on the outposts, about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the Afghan border. The Pakistani military said 24 troops were killed and 13 wounded.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. (2100 GMT) in the Baizai area of Mohmand, where Pakistani troops are fighting Taliban militants. Across the border is Afghanistan's Kunar province, which has seen years of heavy fighting.

"Pakistani troops effectively responded immediately in self-defense to NATO/ISAF's aggression with all available weapons," the Pakistani military statement said.

The commander of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, General John R. Allen, offered his condolences to the families of Pakistani soldiers who "may have been killed or injured."

Dempsey's spokesman, Colonel David Lapan, could not confirm the closure of the Pakistani border crossing to trucks carrying supplies for ISAF forces. However, he noted that "if true, we have alternate routes we can use, as we have in the past."

POORLY MARKED

Around 40 troops were stationed at the outposts, military sources said. Two officers were reported among the dead. "They without any reasons attacked on our post and killed soldiers asleep," said a senior Pakistani officer, requesting anonymity.

The border is often poorly marked, and Afghan and Pakistani maps have differences of several kilometres in some places, military officials have said.

However, Pakistani military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas said NATO had been given maps of the area, with Pakistani military posts identified.

"When the other side is saying there is a doubt about this, there is no doubt about it. These posts have been marked and handed over to the other side for marking on their maps and are clearly inside Pakistani territory."

The incident occurred a day after Allen met Kayani to discuss border control and enhanced cooperation.

A senior military source told Reuters that after the meeting that set out "to build confidence and trust, these kind of attacks should not have taken place."

BLOCKED SUPPLIES

Pakistan is a vital land route for nearly half of NATO supplies shipped overland to its troops in Afghanistan, a NATO spokesman said. Land shipments account for about two thirds of the alliance's cargo shipments into Afghanistan.

Hours after the raid, NATO supply trucks and fuel tankers bound for Afghanistan were stopped at Jamrud town in the Khyber tribal region near the city of Peshawar, officials said.

The border crossing at Chaman in southwestern Baluchistan province was also closed, Frontier Corps officials said.

A meeting of the cabinet's defense committee convened by Gilani "decided to close with immediate effect NATO/ISAF logistics supply lines," according to a statement issued by Gilani's office.

The committee decided to ask the United States to vacate, within 15 days, the Shamsi Air Base, a remote installation in Baluchistan used by U.S. forces for drone strikes which has long been at the center of a dispute between Islamabad and Washington.

The meeting also decided the government would "revisit and undertake a complete review of all programs, activities and cooperative arrangements with US/NATO/ISAF, including diplomatic, political, military and intelligence."

A similar incident on Sept 30, 2010, which killed two Pakistani service personnel, led to the closure of one of NATO's supply routes through Pakistan for 10 days. NATO apologised for that incident, which it said happened when NATO gunships mistook warning shots by Pakistani forces for a militant attack.

Relations between the United States and Pakistan were strained by the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by U.S. special forces in Pakistan in May, which Pakistan called a flagrant violation of sovereignty.

Pakistan's jailing of a CIA contractor and U.S. accusations that Pakistan backed a militant attack on the U.S. embassy in Kabul have added to the tensions.

"This will have a catastrophic effect on Pakistan-U.S. relations. The public in Pakistan are going to go berserk on this," said Charles Heyman, senior defense analyst at British military website Armedforces.co.uk.

Other analysts, including Rustam Shah Mohmand, a former ambassador to Afghanistan, predicted Pakistan would protest and close the supply lines for some time, but that ultimately "things will get back to normal."

NZ leader wins 2nd term, pledges fiscal discipline (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? Prime Minister John Key convincingly won a second term as New Zealand's leader in elections Saturday that open the door for the sales of billions of dollars worth of government assets as part of a plan to reduce the country's debt.

Key's center-right National Party has promised to get the nation's books in order and begin paying down foreign debt within the next three years. That message has taken on a new resonance after the country's credit rating was downgraded this year and the situation in Europe has shown how debt can quickly become toxic.

The National Party dominated the election, coming up just short of getting enough votes to govern alone. With most of the votes counted, the party was projected to win 60 of the 121 seats in Parliament, an increase of two. Key will look to some of the minor parties for support in forming a stable government.

"Tonight New Zealanders voted for a better future, and there will be a better future," Key said in his victory speech.

The center-left Labour party, which had opposed asset sales, won just 27 percent of the vote, meaning it will lose about nine of its 43 seats. Like National, it also promised to get the books in order ? but Labour planned to do it by introducing a capital gains tax and raising the age of retirement by two years, to 67.

Phil Goff, Labour's leader, said the party was "bloodied, but not defeated."

"It wasn't our time this time," he told supporters. The poor showing makes it likely Goff will soon step aside.

Key plans to sell minority stakes in four government-owned energy companies and in Air New Zealand in order to raise an estimated 7 billion New Zealand dollars ($5.2 billion).

The National Party's win could also open the door for more mineral exploration and offshore oil drilling. Labour had proposed a moratorium on deep-sea drilling after a cargo ship ran aground last month near the North Island port of Tauranga, spilling about 400 tons of fuel into the ocean and onto local beaches.

Key's win will also likely continue the country's warming relationship with the United States. For a quarter-century, New Zealand's ban on nuclear warships caused a rift, particularly over defense. However, New Zealand's small troop presence in Afghanistan and a promise by the U.S. to send a contingent of Marines to New Zealand next year point to a thaw.

The U.S. and New Zealand are also among nine Pacific countries negotiating a free trade deal in the region.

The election was also marked by the unexpected return to Parliament of Winston Peters, the mercurial leader of the anti-immigration New Zealand First party, which has shored up support among older voters who approve of its generous policies for them.

New Zealand First won about 7 percent of the vote, enough for eight seats, after getting shut out of the last election in 2008.

The Green party, meanwhile, enjoyed its best showing ever, winning 11 percent of the vote.

But the election also spelled the near-demise of the conservative Act party, which won five seats in the last election but this time could manage just one. Act party leader Don Brash announced he would resign Sunday.

National's campaign hinged on the personal popularity of Key, a former currency trader whose easygoing demeanor appeals to many. His image was placed on hundreds of National billboards.

Key's common touch was reassuring to people when a powerful earthquake struck Christchurch last February, said Jennifer Lees-Marshment, a political studies lecturer at the University of Auckland. It also enabled him to share in their excitement in October when the country's national All Blacks team won the Rugby World Cup.

Voters were also deciding whether to keep their electoral system, in which parties win parliamentary seats based on the proportion of votes they receive. Some wanted to return to a winner-takes-all format, although polls indicated most favored sticking with the current system.

The final results of that measure won't be known for two weeks. In early results, however, about 54 percent of voters favored keeping the German-style proportional system.

Online video series celebrates the Pittsburgh dad (omg!)

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? A new online video series about a stereotypical Pittsburgh father is attracting tens of thousands of viewers.

"Pittsburgh Dad" celebrates and makes fun of the unique speech of the working-class city, where yinz means you all, nebby means nosy and redd up means clean up.

The series is available on YouTube. It's so successful that creator and director Chris Preksta plans more than a dozen new episodes, starring his actor friend Curt Wootton as the dad.

Preksta is known for the SyFy channel series "The Mercury Men." He's filming "Pittsburgh Dad" on an iPhone.

The dad character tells his children not to be wasteful by leaving out half-empty cans of soda pop and promises they'll be drinking "hose water" if the behavior continues.

Wootton say the character is modeled off his own father.

Meizu MX resurfaces, home button gets a nip-and-tuck, turns into optical trackpad?

It's been a while since we've seen the Meizu MX, but these latest shots from Mr. Blurrycam reveal that the phone could see a substantial tweak to its main home button. These photos are likely to be of a work-in-progress handset, with plenty of bizarre cutaways presumably obscuring details of the mole. In the leaked drawings, Meizu's upcoming smartphone looked an awful lot like its M9 predecessor, albeit with a bigger screen, running on a superior A9 Cortex processor. The main button apparently doubles as an optical trackpad, with the two flanking capacitive buttons rotating depending on orientation. While it still remains uncertain whether this nub will replace the squarish button found on the MX mock-up earlier this year, hopefully CEO Jack Wong will still manage to meet the December launch date -- if only for the sake of all those loyal Mei-yo. Fans of severely obscured photography can catch another glimpse after the break.

Michelle Chen: Washington's Debt Panic and the Real Social Debt in America

In the wake of the Congressional super committee's collapse, we finally have consensus on both sides of the aisle: the lawmakers orchestrating the partisan drama are, behind the scenes, happy to collaborate on destroying economic security for all but the wealthiest Americans.

Though the debt hysteria made good political theater, the main immediate impact on the budget is simply to prolong the sense of doom hovering over struggling households. The budget problem those families face isn't some theoretical future debt crisis but the possibility of losing unemployment checks when a year-end legislative deadline hits.

Federally funded unemployment benefits, which conservatives dismiss as a fluffy cushion for the shiftless poor, have been a lifeline for some 17 million Americans in the past three years. In addition to helping individual households pay their bills, the benefits have had a ripple effect on cities and towns battered by an anemic job market,? ?contributing nearly $180 billion in hard cash to those communities struggling with severe unemployment,? according to a report issued in October by the National Employment Law Project.

In January alone, 1.8 million workers who currently receive federal unemployment insurance or would have begun to receive it will be cut off if Congress does not renew the program before it expires on December 31st.... Nearly 650,000 workers in 33 states and the District of Columbia will face an immediate "hard" cut-off of their benefits in January, after struggling to find work and pay their bills for over a year in most cases. There is no phase-out allowing these workers to collect the remainder of their final 13 to 20 weeks of benefits.

Those numbers of course didn?t get much airtime as super committee lawmakers grandstanded by slinging around proposed cuts to social programs and tax breaks for the rich. But if deficit-obsessed lawmakers actually examined the impact of unmployment insurance and other endangered assistance programs, they might start to understand how poverty and inequality is entrenched in America today.

Without unemployment benefits, absolute poverty would engulf a much larger share of the 99 percent. According to NELP, were it not for this assistance,

the increase in the number of Americans in poverty would have more than doubled, from 2.6 million to 5.8 million people. To put these figures in perspective, the number of people protected against destitution has increased nearly sevenfold since 2007 thanks to the unemployment program.

And if people couldn't fall back on meager unemployment payments, their communities, including those cities where people have taken to the streets to express their anger and desperation, would be suffering even more. Those benefits were immediately funneled into local businesses, helping prop up local economies. An unemployment check might be a family's last line of defense against the poor health, disruptions in education, and long-term instability that are associated with severe poverty.

Yet unemployment benefits and other public programs cover just a tiny fraction of the massive social deficits that have plagued the country?s poor, even before this recession hit. An analysis of household economic security by Wider Opportunities for Women found that about 45 percent of Americans are now "unable to cover their basic expenses." Even a large portion of households with two income earners fail to make ends meet. The economic inequality is further polarized along racial lines: ?a startling 77 percent of African American and Hispanic children, are living in families without economic security.?

Following the manufactured "failure" of the Supercommittee's vicious deficit-slashing agenda, we?re looking at more fiscal limbo and bad tidings for the year to come as the unemployment insurance deadline looms.

Maybe over the holiday break, lawmakers will get a glimpse of the real world outside the Beltway, and see that the nation?s real debt lies not in Washington?s fiscal projections but in the economic injustice that robs millions of the most basic dignity.

Is This Russian Rocket Ready to Fly? (The Motley Fool)

It used to be that unless your money was under the mattress, it wasn't safe. Nowadays, even putting your hard-earned cash under the mattress could mean its slow death by inflation. With seemingly nothing being risk-free anymore, I'm looking to the telecom sector to see if any opportunity abounds.

The problem with the telecom sector is that investors looking for fast-paced growth just aren't going to get it here. If you're into collecting a solid dividend payment and worrying relatively little about the validity of your cash flow, then the telecom sector is perfect for you. But who said the conventional wisdom that the turtle will always beat the hare has to prevail?

Certainly not Mobile TeleSystems (NYSE: MBT - News).

The provider of telecommunications services to Russia and many of its neighboring countries continues to prove that not only can a phone company provide solid dividend income, but it can grow quickly as well. If the name sounds familiar, that would be because I mentioned MTS, as well as its leading competitor, VimpelCom (NYSE: VIP - News), as potential bargain-basement buys in September. Two months removed from that statement, I can safely say that Mobile TeleSystems is separating itself as the company to own.

MTS reported third-quarter results Monday that beat consensus estimates on both revenue and profits. Perhaps the one blemish on the company's report was the 25% drop in year-over-year net income. But if that's the worst we can expect from rapidly growing MTS, I personally say, "Bring it on!"

One important factor to keep in mind when evaluating a company like MTS -- which derives the majority of its revenue from Russia -- is its average revenue per user, or ARPU. This indicator allows us as investors to quantify not just how many subscribers MTS is signing up to its cellphone and landline plans, but to establish the quality of the customers in its subscriber base. During the third quarter, ARPU in Russia increased by nearly 7% over the year-ago period, while the company's churn rate dropped by 160 basis points.

To put this in easier-to-understand terms: Customers are using their phones more, canceling their service less -- and Mobile TeleSystems is earning more with its capital expenditures because of it.

Even more impressive is Mobile TeleSystems' history of returning wealth back to shareholders. The company's trailing-12-month yield of 7.5% is higher than U.S. stalwarts AT&T (NYSE: T - News) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ - News), and is more than double that of Vodafone Group (NYSE: VOD - News).

What we have with MTS is a telecommunications company with a forward multiple less than eight, yielding 7.5%, and projected to grow by 13% annually over the next five years. That sounds like a contract that would help any portfolio out.

Ultralight squishy metal bends like rubber

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

A new metallic material has surprising properties: it's almost as light as air and can bounce back into shape after being compressed. Created by Tobias Schaedler and his team from HRL Laboratories, you can watch it get squished then regain its original form in this video.

To create the material, the team used a molecule that changes properties when exposed to light.? By exposing it to ultraviolet beams through a grid-shaped mask, they produced a lattice framework. Then, the template was coated with nickel and phosphorus before being etched away. The resulting material, made up of tiny metallic tubes, doesn't get deformed when squeezed, behaving almost like rubber.

Because of its properties, the substance should have a range of applications, such as thermal insulation and use in electronic parts.

If you enjoyed this video, check out life-like cells made of metal or a super-slippery material inspired by a carnivorous plant.

HELSINKI (Reuters) ? Nokia Oyj (NOK1V.HE) said on Wednesday its network gear joint venture Nokia Siemens Networks aims to cut annual operating costs by around 1 billion euros, including slashing some 17,000 jobs.

The move comes as the venture with Siemens (SIEGn.DE), faces strong pressure from Ericsson (ERICb.ST) and Chinese rivals.

Automotive accidents mapped out by state. Drive safe this ...

)>

Looking for a reason to "drive carefully" as they say about holiday travel by car? This graphic from The Guardian of automotive accidents mapped out by state should be plenty of reason to get holiday drivers in the right frame of mind for going over the river and through the woods to grandmothers house.

"Auto travel remains the preferred method of travel this Thanksgiving with 38.2 million Americans traveling via automobile, also up 4 percent from last year. Auto travelers make up 90 percent of all holiday travelers," AAA said in a news release.

369,629 people died on America's roads between 2001 and 2009 and here we see the what would appear to be the areas of danger. Pretty much anyplace east of the Mississippi requires extra caution. Westerly drivers? Still take care, just because the population is a bit more sparse, does not mean the driving is easy.

On the west coast "You need to get where you're going to be by Wednesday, " Steve Anderson, a forecaster with the National Weather Service told the San Francisco Chronicle, adding "It's going to be wet, and snowy in the Sierra, on Thursday. It will be a good day to be inside."

AAA predicts there will be a 4 percent increase of Americans traveling 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving holiday. Be safe. Drive carefully. Live to tell about it.

FBI arrests seven over Amish beard cutting attacks (Reuters)

CLEVELAND (Reuters) ? Seven men from an Amish splinter group in Ohio were arrested on federal hate crimes charges on Wednesday, accused of involvement in humiliating attacks on fellow Amish involving cutting off their beards and hair.

The men face charges linked to multiple religiously-motivated physical assaults, and the most serious charges could carry a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted, the Department of Justice said in a statement.

"The defendants forcibly restrained multiple Amish men and cut off their beards and head hair with scissors and battery-powered clippers, causing bodily injury to these men while also injuring others who attempted to stop the attacks," the statement said.

The assaults were viewed as particularly egregious for the Amish because, once married, Amish men typically do not trim their beards and Amish women do not cut their hair for religious and cultural reasons.

The attacks took place throughout the fall in three counties south of Cleveland, one of the country's largest concentrations of Amish.

Among the arrested was the breakaway sect's leader, Bishop Samuel Mullet Sr. of Bergholz, Ohio, who was accused of orchestrating the beard-cuttings as revenge for being shunned by the Amish community.

Also arrested were Mullet's family members, Johnny S. Mullet and Daniel S. Mullet of Bergholz and Lester S. Mullet of Hammondsville, Ohio. Police also arrested Levi F. Miller, Eli M. Miller, and Emanuel Schrock, all of Bergholz.

The men were expected to be arraigned later on Wednesday.

In one of the attacks, earlier this month, an elderly Amish man had his hair and beard chopped off by his son and grandsons, who have ties to the sect. The man, however, did not press charges, sticking with the Amish tendency not to contact police, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said.

The attack drew the focus of the FBI.

"I'd like to see Sam Mullet convicted and taken from the community," Abdalla said after the November attack. "You just can't realize the power and domination he has over his people."

In October, five accused attackers -- Daniel, Johnny, and Lester Mullet, as well as Levi and Eli Miller -- were arrested on state charges of kidnapping and aggravated burglary after they were accused of attacking a family of five.

AP Exclusive: Alleged Iran nuke site being watched (AP)

VIENNA ? Satellite surveillance has shown an increase in activity at an Iranian site suspected of links to alleged secret work on nuclear weapons, officials tell The Associated Press.

One of the officials cited intelligence from his home country, saying it appeared Tehran is trying to cover its tracks by sanitizing the site and removing any evidence of nuclear research and development.

Counterparts from two other countries confirmed sightings of increased activity but said they did not have reasons to believe it was linked to such efforts. In Washington, Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said he has "seen nothing to indicate that those concerns are warranted."

Their focus is on a structure believed to be housing a large metal chamber at a military site that a Nov. 8 International Atomic Energy Agency report described as being used for nuclear-related explosives testing.

Officials from the three IAEA member countries say that recent satellite imagery of the site, at Parchin, southwest of Tehran, shows increased activity, including an unusual number of vehicles arriving and leaving. One of the officials described the movements, recorded Nov.4-5, as unusual and said his country views it as evidence that Iran is trying to "clean" the area of traces of weapons-related work

"Freight trucks, special haulage vehicles and cranes were seen entering and leaving... (and) some equipment and dangerous materials were removed from the site," said a summary he provided to the AP.

His counterparts agreed there had been more activity than usual at the site around that date but could not conclude that pointed to an attempted cover-up by the Iranians.

The IAEA was alerted to the suspicions late last week and a senior diplomat familiar with the issue said the agency was closely monitoring all suspect sites mentioned in the agency's report. He, like the officials, asked for anonymity because his information was confidential.

The IAEA said it would have no comment. Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's chief delegate to the IAEA, dismissed the reports as "childish stories." He told the AP he had not heard of any such activity, describing the claims as "ridiculous."

Iran is already under U.N. Security council sanctions because of concerns it seeks to develop nuclear weapons, and the IAEA report has increased international pressure. But the Islamic Republic insists it has no such intentions and says Israel, and its undeclared nuclear arsenal, is the main threat to the Middle East.

Reflecting its defiance, Iran was boycotting an IAEA meeting Monday attended by Israel and all Arab nations meant to explore the possibilities of establishing a nuclear-arms-free Mideast based on the experiences of other world regions with such zones.

The large Parchin complex is used for research, development, and production of ammunition, missiles, and high explosives. IAEA experts had already visited the site twice in 2005 and were allowed to pick several buildings at random for inspections that revealed nothing suspicious. But a former inspector who was part of that inspection told the AP that the site was too vast to be able to draw conclusions on the basis of such restricted and haphazard visits.

Iran asserts it is interested only in producing energy. But it has refused for over three years to allow the IAEA to probe growing suspicions that it is conducting research and development of such weapons and continues to enrich uranium, which can be used both to power reactors of arm nuclear warheads.

Summarizing such fears in a Nov. 8 report that first mentioned the steel chamber believed to be used for nuclear testing, the agency concluded that some of the alleged activities it listed could have no other purpose than to make the bomb.

Ahead of that report, on Oct. 30. Iran invited top IAEA investigator Herman Nackaerts to Tehran for talks "aiming at a resolution of matters." That would have given Nackaerts a chance to ask for a renewed trip to Parchin that included a visit to the suspected building.

On Friday, however, Soltanieh abruptly announced that the trip was postponed, if not canceled. He blamed the IAEA, saying it had "messed up" the trip by publishing its report.

The decision could give Iran time to clean up sites mentioned in the report as being part of the secret work, should it chose to do so. The senior diplomat said the IAEA was aware of that possibility ? even if the official reason for postponement given the agency by the Iranians was that domestic sentiment was too negative in the wake of the report for such a visit.

Such cleanups would not be new. Iran razed the Lavizan Shian complex in northern Iran, before allowing IAEA inspectors to visit the suspected repository of military procured equipment that could be used in a nuclear weapons program five years ago. Tehran said the site had been demolished to make way for a park, but inspectors subsequently found traces of uranium enriched to or near the level used in making the core of nuclear warheads.

The Iranians also embarked on an extensive redo at the Kalay-e Electric Co., just west of Tehran, before agency inspectors were given access nine years ago. Although the site was repainted and otherwise sanitized, samples taken from Kalay-e also showed traces of enriched uranium, though at levels substantially below warhead grade.

Based on the IAEA report, the agency's board on Friday expressed "deep and increasing concern about the unresolved issues regarding the Iranian nuclear program, including those which need to be clarified to exclude the existence of possible military dimensions." The concerns were voiced in a resolution supported by 32 of the 35 board nations.

Michael Giltz: Theater: Alan Rickman's "Seminar" Needs Another Edit

SEMINAR ** out of ****
GOLDEN THEATRE

Anyone who has ever participated in a creative writing class of any kind will relish the premise of this new comedy by Theresa Rebeck. In a real writing class, everyone is exquisitely sensitive to the need to be polite when commenting on someone else's work. You begin with whatever positive comment you can muster ("I really liked the use of the adjective 'bumbling' in describing the old security guard....") before tenderly suggesting that perhaps the story wasn't quite ready for printing in The New Yorker ("I was a little confused by the uh um dialogue in the first, second, third, fourth and sixth paragraph. But the fifth paragraph was great!")

But in Seminar, we know the class will be led by Alan Rickman and that he promises for $5000.00 to eviscerate the work of aspiring writers with the complete freedom of a man who was once a major writing star and is now reduced to a "servant" who helps other writers either through his work as an editor or in these classes. Is he bitter? Yes, thank goodness. So if nothing else you get to live the fantasy of saying exactly what you want to your fellow writers through Rickman. When he purrs "whorish" and other devastating put-downs to the gaggle of writers assembled at his feet, you smile with delight. They're not at his feet for adoration but rather to make it easier for Rickman to kick them when they're down.

That's the sole pleasure really for this too familiar work riddled with ludicrously unrealistic moments. The four aspiring writers immediately fall into types: Jerry O'Connell nicely plays Douglas, a privileged go-getter who knows how to use his wealthy connections to network his way to success. It helps that he's already published in literary magazines and actually has a competent sort of talent, just enough to make him be read by others but not enough to actually make a name for himself; it would be nicer if anything he said actually made you believe he could write a decent, competent story. "You'll never be on a panel," is how Rickman skewers him.

The lovely Hettienne Park plays Izzy, who unabashedly uses her looks to further her career. Rickman's Leonard will skewer her as well, but in a much more graphic manner more beneficial to both of them.

Hamish Linklater is Martin, a writing snob who loathes Douglas, yearns for Izzy and either can't or won't recognize that his best friend Kate is in love with him. Kate is played amusingly by Lily Rabe as a neurotic, frumpy dresser who hides her beauty under sexless clothing and hides her insecurity by diving into ice cream and cookie dough at every turn.

The show is filled with twists and turns but detailing any of them wouldn't be a spoiler since you can spot them a mile away. The main question is whether Rickman's Leonard is a bastard or actually ruthlessly trying to help these writers. And are any of them any good at writing? Ultimately, we don't care.

Rebeck's play is filled with foolishness, especially the idea that Rickman doesn't read anything until he shows up for class, which means they must sit in silence while he peruses someone's short story (or novel!). The result is that throughout the show we watch Rickman and the students glance at a paragraph or two or at most scan a page or two and immediately start declaring this or that work is genius or wildly commercial or pure and utter crap. They don't even need to read an entire story or even half of it or even a third of it or even just three pages before being convinced of its worth?

This conceit has to be accepted but it's completely unnecessary and frankly lazy on Rebeck's part, a device to create instant suspense by having them watch Rickman's reaction while he sees the work for the first time. Suspense could just as easily and more realistically be created by having the students hand out work at the end of a session. The following week the students arrive first and we figure out their reaction by what they say to each other before Leonard arrives. Maybe they're jealous or embarrassed or surprised or bored. Then we watch with suspense to see how that attitude changes when Leonard weighs in. Instead, we're left with the absurd sight of people who claim to care about the written word barely bothering to read one-tenth of a story before tossing it aside.

This device taints the entire show because it's impossible to take any of their opinions seriously since they're almost always based on the most superficial reading. Rebeck might have mined this for comic effect if it happened once: if Rickman was forced to read a short story right away (against common practice) and then never got past the first line because he eviscerated it so completely in its construction, why that would be funny. Having the entire show work this way beggars belief. So do many other elements.

Kate has written and rewritten one story over and over again for the past six years, apparently not working on a single other piece. Really? And Martin, her best friend since high school, has no idea that the massively luxurious nine room mansion she lives in on the Upper West Side is rent-controlled. Really? (This does however lead to one of the show's most amusing moments when Martin and the rest corner Kate and force her to reveal the rent she pays on the place; it's a genuine New York moment.) Martin pays $5000 to attend this seminar, leaving him broke and homeless since he can't pay his rent...but he refuses to bring in any of his work. Really? One student dashes off an entire book in one week and the result is so rich and intriguing that even Leonard recognizes its potential. Really?

Seminar might have been a satire of scheming writers struggling to get ahead, but the show isn't that vicious. It might have used a genuine love of writing and literature to bring these characters alive in their struggles to create, though beyond references to Jack Kerouac they almost never really discuss literature or writing or their favorite authors. You might expect their conversations to be peppered with "David Foster Wallace" or "Jonathan Franzen" but except for Martin's pro forma defense of Art the issue never really comes up.

Rickman does his level best with Leonard, especially a juicy monologue about the arc of his career, but he simply doesn't have enough to work with. O'Connell and Park are fine, with Rabe squeezing out the humor of her part whenever possible. And why did Linklater shave his hair? (That unruly mop served him so well in his brilliant turn in The School For Lies. It will be a terrible shame if that production doesn't see further life.) Here Linklater is adrift in a clueless character we never fully accept because Martin is never fully drawn by Rebeck. Still his natural skill keeps Martin compelling enough.

Director Sam Gold should have sent Rebeck back for another few rewrites but otherwise keeps things moving along. As long as you don't think too deeply about anything that happens or try and make sense of these paper-thin characters, the quips arrive regularly thanks to the able cast. David Zinn's costumes are on the money but his set for Kate's apartment feels wrong. The colorful painting along the back wall is a distraction and it's hard to imagine a writer who would have books color-coordinated and arranged by their spines instead of their authors or subjects (one shelf is all blue books, two more all-white, one all black and so on). If the point is that she's not at home even in her own home (it's not clear where her rent money comes from so maybe the decoration is her parents' work), then we should have had some further indication of that in her behavior. Finally, the scene change cues by John Gromada make it sound like we're in a British dance club rather than an Upper West Side home discussing literature.

This is a distant cousin to Master Class, another show in which a major artist works with neophytes on their craft. While we happily don't get flashbacks to Leonard's life, Seminar sorely lacks any insight into or love of writing. We don't see Leonard specifically and genuinely revealing why this bit of writing doesn't work and that bit of writing does. We don't get any sense of their love of literature or why they've chosen writing over some other career. We don't see anyone realizing they don't have what it takes or enjoying a creative breakthrough. In short, at this Seminar, we don't get our money's worth.
