Intel shows off Oak Trail-based Android Honeycomb tablets, confirms Android Market support

At a time when ARM and Android are dominating the mobile computing world, Intel's only just starting to catch up with some green robot-friendly prototypes, like these Oak Trail-based 10-inch tablets at Computex 2011. Starting from the left we have the Intel Green Ridge, Foxconn F150, Quanta QXZI, an unnamed Compal device, Intel Marco Polo 2, and Intel Carrot. Sadly, Intel wouldn't give the names of the ODMs behind its own reference tablets, so your guess is just as good as ours.

With the exception of the Gingerbread-powered Foxconn slate, these were all running on Honeycomb 3.0.1 OS -- well, we say running, but just barely. As you'll see in our hands-on video after the break, most of the devices were struggling to keep up with the launcher animation, and needless to say, Intel wasn't keen on letting us test video playback on them. We also noticed that Android Market was missing on the prototypes, but Intel assured us that it'll be available on the final products, and that current Android apps are already supported by Oak Trail. In terms of build quality it left much to be desired, though this is forgivable at a trade show; it's the software that we're concerned with. From what we've seen here at Computex, Android on Oak Trail is far from ready, so it'll be interesting to see if Acer can actually pull off a July launch for its rumored Oak Trail Honeycomb tablet.

Update: OK, our in-depth hands-on video is finally working. Check it out after the break.

As Floodwaters Drop, Part Of Louisiana Spillway Shut

With Mississippi River levels dropping at a key gauge in Louisiana, the Army Corps of Engineers said Wednesday it has closed three bays of the Morganza spillway.

The spillway northwest of Baton Rouge was opened May 14 to ease pressure on levees at Baton Rouge and New Orleans by diverting some of the Mississippi's flow into the Atchafalaya River, where it would threaten less-populated communities.

The corps said one Morganza bay was closed on Tuesday and two more on Wednesday. That leaves 14 of its 125 bays open.

The corps said it's too early to say when more bays would be closed. However, with the Mississippi's crest already past the Morganza structure, the flow reduction is good news downstream on the Atchafalaya, especially for Morgan City where the river is expected to crest on Monday.

This, I'm hoping, will be the biggest preparation for a non-event than ever before.

Flood fears already were easing somewhat along the Atchafalaya, where earlier warnings that inhabited areas could be inundated with as much as 28 feet of water had not materialized as of Wednesday.

At Morgan City, a hub of seafood and oil industry activity near the coast, a 24-foot floodwall was doing its job, Mayor Tim Matte said. Better yet, backwater flooding from a complex network of bayous, lakes and canals was not materializing. "We really were concerned that we would see a rise in Lake Palourde and we would see that backwater flooding," Matte said in a telephone interview. "The lake has actually dropped."

In neighboring Terrebonne Parish, Parish President Michel Claudet said flood controls, including levee fortifications and the sinking of a barge to block flow through a key bayou had prevented flooding. But he also credited a drought that has enabled the ground to soak up water while keeping backwater flooding to a minimum. "This, I'm hoping, will be the biggest preparation for a non-event than ever before," he said.

Water was creeping over roads and into remote camps near Butte Larose west of Baton Rouge, where a mandatory evacuation was ordered Tuesday, said Capt. Ginny Higgins, spokeswoman for the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office. Buildings in the town of about 650 were likely to take on water, she said. But some buildings are raised, "so it's not going to be an issue with them," Higgins said.

That the threat appeared to be easing did not mean there were no problems. There was the stress of the anticipated flood and the evacuations, Higgins noted. "I know people are frustrated," she said.

The high Atchafalaya meant a big expense and loss of business for Robert Conner. He had to move freezers and much of his stock out of his seafood processing business, Craws `n' Claws, which by necessity operates on the watery side of Morgan City's towering flood wall and is now inundated. Ordinarily he processes fish, crabs and crawfish unloaded at the dock. Now, operating inland, he said he is only selling live crawfish, and he estimated lost revenue will total in the hundreds of thousands of dollars by the time he can return, clean up and get back to full operation.

The Mississippi and the Atchafalaya rivers are expected to stay high for weeks. That means constant patrols of the Mississippi River levees from the Arkansas line to the Gulf will continue.

The Morganza was the second spillway to be opened to ease flood pressures in Louisiana.. The Bonnet Carre spillway, near New Orleans, opened in early May, sending a torrent of Mississippi water into brackish Lake Pontchartrain. It remained open Wednesday.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who earlier this month acknowledged the problems opening the Morganza would pose for many west of New Orleans, announced Wednesday that the city and the nonprofit Greater New Orleans Foundation were establishing a charity, the NOLA Pay It Forward fund, to aid Mississippi River flood victims, including those affected by the spillway opening.

On Wednesday, the corps said it decided to close three bays at Morganza after the river's flow dropped at Red River Landing. The amount of water flowing though Morganza was never as high as the corps first predicted.

Initial estimates were that the opening would unleash 300,000 cubic feet per second into the Atchafalaya basin. On Wednesday, the corps said its latest computations indicated the flow had been 172,000 cfs, reduced to 140,000 with the closing of three bays.

Rising prostate cancer rate seen in U.S. servicemen (Reuters ...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? The rate of prostate cancer among active-duty U.S. Air Force members has been several times higher in recent years than it was 20 years ago, a new study finds.

Researchers believe that the trend is not a sign of any increase in servicemen?s actual risk of the cancer. Instead, they think that wider use of prostate cancer screening may be catching some early cancers that once went undetected.

That would match the pattern seen among U.S. men generally. After PSA blood tests came into use for prostate cancer screening in the mid-1990s, the number of men diagnosed with the cancer rose.

However, PSA screening is controversial. Because prostate cancer is often slow-growing and may never progress far enough to threaten a man?s life, finding and treating early tumors can do more harm than good for some. Treatment side effects include impotence and incontinence.

It?s estimated that such ?low risk? tumors account for 40 to 50 percent of prostate cancers diagnosed among U.S. men.

In the new study, researchers found that between 2005 and 2008, the rate of prostate cancer among white active-duty Air Force servicemen was three times higher than it was between 1991 and 1994.

Among African Americans, the rate rose 11-fold, according to findings published in the Journal of Urology.

The absolute numbers were still low. Among white men in recent years, the rate was about 26 cases per 100,000 servicemen per year; among black men, the rate was 39 per 100,000.

But both of those rates were higher than what was seen during the same period among U.S. men in general in the same 35 to 64 age range. Most of the cancers in servicemen ?62 percent ? were low risk, which is also higher than the U.S. norm.

The difference is probably because Air Force members are more likely to be screened for prostate cancer, according to researcher Dr. Marc Goldhagen, of the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in San Antonio.

?I believe that the consensus from all involved with this study is that the increased incidence found in our population was due to increased screening,? Goldhagen told Reuters Health in an email.

The Air Force requires yearly physical exams. That does not automatically include PSA testing, since experts recommend against routine screening.

But men who see a doctor regularly would presumably have more chances to discuss PSA screening, or possibly have it recommended to them because they are at increased risk ? because of family history, for example.

When it came to treatment, Goldhagen?s team found, nearly all active-duty servicemen with low risk cancer (92 percent) opted to have surgery, rather than delay treatment in favor of ?active surveillance.?

Active surveillance means that a man?s cancer is monitored over time with PSA tests and biopsies. There is growing evidence that for older men with low-risk prostate cancer, active surveillance is a good option ? discouraging ?overtreatment? without increasing their risk of dying from the cancer.

But it?s not surprising at all that so many Air Force servicemen with low-risk cancer would have surgery, according to Dr. Patrick C. Walsh, a professor of urology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Walsh, who was not involved in the study, said he sees no evidence of overtreatment.

He pointed out that the average age at diagnosis was just 48. ?When a young man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, surgery is the best option,? Walsh told Reuters Health.

It?s not yet known whether active surveillance is safe for men in their 40s and 50s, according to Walsh. And on top of that, he said, they would face many years of repeated biopsies ? which can cause the same side effects as surgery, including incontinence and impotence.

Goldhagen also pointed out that a man in his 40s, even with low-risk cancer, would have many years of life ahead during which the tumor could progress. And doctors have no way of predicting which low-risk cancers will ultimately progress.

While the researchers believe increased screening is the reason for the rising rate of prostate cancer among service members, they had no information on whether a man?s cancer was detected through screening, or because he was having symptoms that prompted testing.

They say more research is needed to nail down the extent to which screening accounts for the rising rates of prostate cancer seen in Air Force servicemen.

Have you checked the door frames lately? | Home Improvement Tips

I recently became aware of my windows. Not really sure why ? other than my real estate agent said that they tended to be a. Have you checked your last? You know how they are vital to many aspects of your home? When you sell your home ownership in the vision. They look at all the details you give every day and contempt. Things and details that many of us would laugh to know that someone actually took the time to watch this closely. But when you live in a house on a daily basis as minor problems may go unnoticed and unattended. If you have a real estate professional monitoring of these little problems for you, then you can be sure they are seeing things from a new angle. If not, it is preferable to have a trusted friend or neighbor to help us investigate your home for you.

Maybe you have a dog scratching at the door and not even realize they were ripped to shreds door padding. Maybe you have a child who slams the door every time you storm off to their room, when their anger and slowly let the frame stand out from the wall. In any case, I am so little a matter of many sellers do not even know! The best thing to do is really an independent testing house and will give you some guidance and advice from their point of view. As a seller, you must be open to what buyers say subjective. You can not be offended because it is still possible if they sold their home. You have to trust those who want to help give the right information to help you sell your home quickly and for as long as the bear market.

If you try to get the most out of your house to sell, you can not only list and hope for the best. You must be willing to put time and effort to do better than anyone else in your region or price range. This means more details. Once again, until even the door frames. Children, animals and people in general can make a door and the area around the door handle dirty and catches a lot of buttons. Wash all doors. Check all door seals and make sure that all doors are closed as they should, like garage doors in the house. Most should have an automatic closing mechanism does not allow carbon monoxide into the house to the garage.

Online Marketing Trends for 2011

. This is the year for Social Media Marketing. In 2011, organizations should be executing social techniques that will be completely incorporated straight into the complete marketing and advertising system. Virtually every small business needs a social media marketing methodology and the correct resources to manage it.
. Mobile marketing is on the run. The rise in smart-phone utilization and relaxed download caps on mobile phone plans has seen mobile marketing achieve momentum. Tablet instruments really should easily be a mainstream consideration in your digital marketing method.
. 2011 sees a new era of online video content, re-introducing the human factor and evolving the nature of communication; which make it dynamic, interactive and fast. Video is definitely utilised more for well-known online content and marketing and advertising.
. SEO will likely be challenging (if it isn?t enough already!). Competition for Google gets hotter with Yahoo, Bing, Search.com, and social sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Having your small business on the 1st page of search engine rankings is set to become harder. Mobile search and geo-location should certainly further increase the challenges and surprises for search engine optimizers.

You?ll want to Ensure You Get Your Online Marketing Ready for this year

It?s time for you to strengthen your online awareness, to assist you to benefit from the emerging Internet marketing trends through the coming year.
1. Go mobile. Is your own internet site straight forward and even pleasurable to see on a portable phone? With a good deal more and more I-phones, Apple ipads as well as Android driven smart-phones in use, mobile promoting and marketing is going to increase over and above mobile texting. Mobile electronic mail, mobile websites and mobile applications are definitely practical promotional channels. Get your current website mobile-friendly right now!

2. Use video. Video will be an incredible way for you to connect to consumers online. Video might help your site get ?super-optimised? for yahoo and google. A page having online video posesses a solid possibility of becoming ranked higher up than one that?s entirely text-based. With high speed internet and lowered cost of video production, the impact of video in marketing is ever-increasing.

3. Social Media Marketing is maturing. Is your website able to take advantage of the reach and influence of Facebook and Twitter? With Facebook Credits and social commerce sites similar to Groupon, customers have the ability to start their purchase decision cycle via these websites. Get ready to harness the commercial value of the Facebook ?like? button, since peer recommendation may well be more powerful than the push model.

4. Is your internet site optimised with regard to localised searches? At present, every major online search engine like Google, Yahoo and Bing is serving up local results to make things easy for online surfers. Does your online business figure in the top ranks of these search listings? Owning the local space could be the stepping-stone to big business outside. Make sure your search and social marketing strategies take into account location-based opportunities.

5. Content still rules. Continue to offer totally free information to your consumers. Paid content continues to suffer in 2011, when users can see the information you have in other places free of charge, they will go there for this. Your online business will go beyond advertising, preaching and pushing products. Be useful to your visitors ? provide material that?s helpful to them.

6. Tweak your e-mail marketing strategy. E-mail marketing still remains an established technique to achieve business objectives. Segmentation and targeting will permit you to deliver a tailored and relevant message to prospective customers to provide the ideal click-through and conversion performance.

7. Upgrade your internet site. Edit, reword and enhance the look of your web site to make sure it?s relevant and up-to-date. Set unique titles and descriptions for each page/post of your website, that is crucial for SEO, and also for feeding your site into social networking channels. Generate an RSS feed making sure that visitors can subscribe for updates with a feed reader or email.

8. Set up analytics. Use Google Analytics or something comparable to spell out your marketing goals, integrate it together with your online marketing programme to observe how you are progressing. Evaluate results from your specific internet marketing activities (i.e. shopping cart, Pay-per-click ads, social media channels, etc.) to be able to see how well each is doing for you.

Bombino: High-Energy Sounds From 'Agadez,' Niger

The Tuareg people have lived in the Sahara desert of Western Africa for thousands of years. The harsh desert environment gets woven into those who can adapt to it. So the Tuareg have long been protective of their independent, nomadic-herder culture and society. But not unlike the European Roma, Tuaregs have a tense ? occasionally violent ? relationship with central governments. As with the Roma, the Tuareg's modern music has become a prime vehicle for both defiance and unification.

In the early 1990s, during an armed struggle with the Niger government over water, land and independence, the child Omara Moctar, now known as Bombino, fled with his family from their home in the city of Agadez. While exiled in Algeria, the 12-year-old Bombino first heard electric guitar and was captivated. By 2010, guitar players were no longer considered symbols of insurrection and Bombino could return to Agadez and play openly. Based on his new album, he is clearly a young performer with the charisma and probing imagination to become the first Tuareg star. And he addresses the oldest theme of all in "Tar Hani," which means "My Love."

It may sound peculiar to suggest that could be the hit single from the album Agadez, but currents of blues and rock run through Bombino's guitar work, picked up from Jimi Hendrix records combined with influences from the group Tinariwen, the founders of electric Tuareg music, and guitarists from Mali like Ali Farke Toure. Bombino is another example of a player who seems to plug in himself when he plugs in his guitar. Still, he can cast a charming trance on acoustic, particularly resonator guitar, which he often reserves for folk tunes such as one dedicated to "The Desert, My Home."

The Tuaregs are Muslims most in tune with the Sufi tradition that treasures poetry ? music that draws the community together in festivals of culture. Often, Bombino offers a stripped-down, garage-band treatment of the tradition, with only a second guitar and some gourd percussion and handclaps to back him up. At times, I miss the richness of the Tinariwen band, and its album Aman Iman remains the ideal introduction to Tuareg electric. But if you enjoy the style at all, Agadez has to be part of the package. Bombino makes for a strong frontman ? he feels less like a collective than Tinariwen does ? and there's no resisting his headlong, six-string rave-ups.

Bombino's future is open. He says he's as happy to celebrate peace with his music as he is to use it as a Tuareg call to arms. He'll spread the word this summer on his first extended American tour. In the meantime, you can visit YouTube for some hi-energy performance selections from the recent documentary about Bombino, also called Agadez. The clip that's listed as "Bombino Concert, Agadez" captures the essence of his populism and joy.

Stefano Langone Eliminated From 'American Idol'

Haley Reinhart and Jacob Lusk also land in the bottom three.
By Gil Kaufman

Wednesday night's "Music of the 21st Century" wasn't kind to most of the "American Idol" contestants, but even with a few missteps, host Ryan Seacrest revealed on Thursday's (April 21) results show that more than 52 million votes were cast for the top seven.

After an unrelenting march of early female departures, the remaining two ladies were safe for a second week, though Haley Reinhart did land in the bottom three again, if only for a moment before being ushered back to safety. That left often-on-the-brink wild card Stefano Langone and Jacob Lusk sweating out their fate by hour's end.

The fourth time, alas, was not a charm for Langone, as his luck finally ran out and Lusk lived to sing another day. Looking like his usual cocky self, Langone smiled and seemed happily resigned to his fate as he watched his highlights package. "It started my career and ... you can't put a price on that," he said in response to Seacrest's question about how the show had changed Stefano's life. He then happily sang Stevie Wonder's "Lately" one more time, giving the audience another taste of his cruise-ship talents as rocker James Durbin openly wept at the sight of his pal grabbing the mic for the last time. In fact, Durbin couldn't control his emotions and ran out to bear-hug and spin Langone around as he finished the song before the car-crash survivor was enveloped in a group hug.

Earlier in the night, the first two to get the results were Lusk and Casey Abrams, with Seacrest still talking about the spontaneous kiss Casey sprang on judge Jennifer Lopez the night before. Even after the return of his scary-face singing on Maroon 5's "Harder to Breathe," Abrams was safe, while Lusk was back in the bottom three after failing to convince viewers with his cover of hero Luther Vandross' "Dance With my Father."

When Seacrest asked Lauren Alaina, Durbin and Langone to take the long walk, it was no surprise that Langone was back in the bottom three after his tepid take on Ne-Yo's "Closer," which meant Alaina and Durbin were safe.

And it seemed pretty obvious when Scotty McCreery and Reinhart were the last two to get the news that front-runner McCreery would likely be safe, and he was, meaning once again Reinhart was facing elimination after her good notices for Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." She wasn't down long, though, as Seacrest ushered her to safety just moments later.

Earlier in the night, Lauren, Haley, Stefano and Jacob sang a version of Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" to open the show that managed to make the fluffy pop confection even frothier. That was followed by Casey, Scotty and James singing a "Glee"-ky version of Coldplay's "Viva la Vida," during which a self-assured Durbin stole the show coming off like the seasoned showman next to a pair of flat amateurs with shaky stage presence.

The show also found season-seven winner David Cook coming home to sing his new single, the midtempo rocker "The Last Goodbye," and Katy Perry taking the stage in a glowing white space suit to sing her hit alien love song "E.T." with a surprise cameo from fur-decked collaborator Kanye West.

Next week, the top six take on the catalog of 1970s pop icon Carole King on Wednesday night and Bruno Mars drops in to perform on Thursday's elimination show.

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep with best wishes to Peyton Hillis. The Cleveland Browns player is the latest football star featured on the cover of the "Madden NFL" game. Several players who've been on that cover including Marshall Faulk, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady went on to have lousy seasons or injuries. Hillis says he isn't worried. He intends to show the curse, the Madden curse, does not exist. Maybe it's just that many football players get injured anyway.

One Year After Spill, Widow of Rig Worker Continues to Struggle with Loss

Wednesday marks the first anniversary of the BP well explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The eruption led to the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Beyond the cost to the environment, there was a tremendous human loss ? 11 workers were killed in the initial explosion. For 15 years, tool pusher, Jason Anderson, worked for the company Transocean ?"- a contractor BP hired to operate the well. Host Michel Martin speaks with his wife, Shelley Anderson, about her family's continued struggle to cope with the loss.

MICHEL MARTIN, host:

I'm Michel Martin, and this is TELL ME MORE, from NPR News.

Coming up, we hear from a daughter of Malcolm X about a controversial new biography of the late black nationalist leader. A conversation with Ilyasah Shabazz is later in the program.

But, first, today marks the first anniversary of the largest oil spill in U.S. history, started by an explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Two-hundred million gallons of oil polluted the waters and shores of the Gulf Coast. And the environmental and financial devastation is still being felt there.

The enormity of the damage, though, often seems to overshadow how it began, with an explosion that cost the lives of 11 workers and injured 17 others. Their families are struggling to recover from the loss. We wanted to check in with a member of one of those families to find out how they are doing. Yesterday we reached Shelly Anderson, who lost her husband Jason aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig.

Shelly joined us from her home in Midfield, Texas. Also on the line with us was Shelly Anderson's attorney Ernest Cannon. He was at his home office in Stephenville, Texas. And I began by telling Mrs. Anderson how very sorry we all are for her loss.

Ms. SHELLY ANDERSON: It's OK. I've learned in the past year that it doesn't matter what somebody says, you can't normally just make it any worse than what it already is. You can't say something wrong to me if you're using your heart and you don't mean to say something mad, it doesn't hurt. Not as much as it already does.

MARTIN: Well, thank you for that. Do you mind if I ask you how you first found out that something was wrong?

Ms. ANDERSON: I saw it on TV the first time. My friend called me and asked me if I had been watching the news, that they were talking about Jason's rig on TV and that she was positive it was Jason's rig. She made me watch it again and that's when they started saying the name of the rig. But it took several hours for Transocean to call and let us know that anything had happened. We called the 800 numbers they told us to call, and all we could get was voice messages, leaving messages, waiting for people to call us back. It took a while.

MARTIN: How long after the actual explosion was it before you finally found out that something very terrible had happened from the company? How long was it before they actually confirmed what you had heard in media reports?

Ms. ANDERSON: All we had heard from the company was that there was an explosion and that the rig had been evacuated. We didn't know if Jason had made it off of the rig. We tried calling cell phones and the rig number was busy. We watched the TV. We saw one man being lifted by the helicopter from the baskets. We were just hoping to catch a glimpse of Jason. We called the hospitals all along the coast. It was a while. It was - I think it - I don't - that time frame is all mushy in my brain. I don't remember the exact time that they called and told me that Jason was one of the 11 missing.

MARTIN: Have you been getting any help from the company since then? For example, did they help with funeral arrangements and have you been receiving any support in the year since this happened?

Ms. ANDERSON: Um...

MARTIN: I'm sorry. Take your time.

Ms. ANDERSON: I think just because somebody brought it up to me, but I don't remember now, I think that Transocean might have offered to pay for Jason's funeral expenses, but I did. I paid for Jason's funeral. I paid for everything about it, other than donations from family and friends. I wrote those checks for all of that.

MARTIN: And what about since then? Is there, forgive me for having to ask, but has there been any insurance? Is there compensation when something like this, you know, happens? A death benefit?

Ms. ANDERSON: Jason had a life insurance policy that he paid for, that we got most of. There was a little bit of it that we weren't able to receive the check for just yet. Some things can get complicated because he did die at sea and there is no death certificate. So some things can get a little complicated in that area. Transocean has continued Jason's paychecks, which allow us to have insurance, but I have no idea when they're going to stop that.

I've heard that they stopped other people's. I've heard that they have - that they were going to stop ours after the anniversary and that last month would've been the last check, but I don't know for sure when it stops.

Mr. ERNEST CANNON (Attorney): Shelly, this is Ernest Cannon, would you tell Michel about our meeting with Transocean's lawyer when we tried to discuss with him how long you might receive Jason's wages or to come to some accommodation or some settlement with you? Would you tell her about Transocean's lawyer's attitude that evening?

Ms. ANDERSON: That evening, when we met with that Transocean lawyer there, he -I was just trying to tell them how much Jason meant to me and what Jason meant to me. And he didn't want to listen. Sorry. He didn't want to listen. He didn't want to listen to anything that I said. And he stood up and he walked out. And all I was trying to do was tell him about Jason.

There are lawyers from BP, Mr. Feinberg, Mr. Rozen, they're willing to listen. And they've reached out and they're ready to listen. But the one lawyer that I talked to from Transocean, I tried to tell him a Jason story and he didn't want to hear any part of it.

MARTIN: Mr. Cannon, were you there for this? Were you present?

Mr. CANNON: Yes, I was.

MARTIN: May I ask you what happened there?

Mr. CANNON: Yes. I had arranged a meeting for two purposes with Transocean's lawyer. One was so that my other client, who was injured, Kayla Palloway(ph) and Shelly could tell Transocean's lawyer how they felt. Jason, Shelly and Kayla were all extremely loyal to Transocean. So we set up the meeting for that purpose and I wanted to talk to them about settling the claims.

When Kayla had been - Shelly started telling the lawyer how they felt, he said he wasn't going to sit and listen to them be critical of Transocean and that he would see that, in so many words, that he would see that they paid for their insulting attitude about telling how they felt about Transocean abandoning them in their time of need when they had been loyal to them.

MARTIN: Well, can I ask you about that, Mr. Cannon? I'll direct this question to you. I'm going to give Shelly a minute. I understand from her that the company has continued his paycheck and has also continued the insurance coverage. What else are you looking for at this point? What else would you like to see happen?

Mr. CANNON: Well, in Ms. Anderson's case, when we had the meeting with Transocean's lawyer, I asked him how long they would continue to pay and as I understand it, am I correct, Shelly, that his response was that he thought through this April? In other words, that the payments of his salary would now end?

Ms. ANDERSON: After the anniversary. That's the way I understood him to say it.

Mr. CANNON: That's the way I understood it also. We would like for Transocean and BP and Halliburton and Cameron and the responsible parties to allow Shelly to have a case for us to take depositions, for us to see what caused the accident, for us to explain what her damages are, and to have an assessment just as we do in every other case in the country like this. And if we need to, go to court and try it to a jury and see what a jury will decide that Shelly's damages are.

Transocean particularly, and the other defendants have filed lawsuits against Shelly and the other people to keep them from having a case and to limit them to a very small amount.

MARTIN: What is the grounds there? If it's not - what is the basis of their suit? What's the allegation?

Mr. CANNON: Their suit against Shelly - they said, Shelly, the day after the Transocean CEO came to her kitchen and hugged her and said he'd take care of her, the next day, he had his company lawyers file suit against her, under what's called a limitation of liability law. Transocean's taking advantage of a 160-year-old law that technically tie these people up forever.

What their program is is they're trying to make it so difficult - as you can see the shape Shelly's in even a year later - they're trying to make her give up and go away and they won't have to pay them damage.

MARTIN: Now I understand that that's your interpretation of their intention, but I need to know, what is the allegation that they are making?

Ms. ANDERSON: They're trying to say that Jason died offshore is not the same as Jason dying onshore and on land. And that his life is not worth it to them if he's offshore. If he was on land, it would be a totally different situation and the law would not even apply. But because they say he died at sea and offshore, he's not worth as much. He's expendable.

MARTIN: Well, I appreciate your being willing to talk to us on such a difficult day, such a difficult time. But before I let you go, what would make it better? Is there anything that would make it better?

Ms. ANDERSON: Yeah. Get him to come home. That would make it all be better. Beyond that, I don't have an answer for that question. I have no idea. I've never lost a husband before. Never had to raise two kids by myself before. I don't know what would make it better other than just bring him home.

MARTIN: Shelly, I'm so sorry. Shelly Anderson is a mother of two. She's the wife of Jason Anderson who was one of the 11 workers who died after the explosion at the BP operated well in the Gulf of Mexico. She was with us from her home in Midfield, Texas. Ernest Cannon is her attorney. He was with us from his home office in Stephenville, Texas. I thank you both so much for joining us. Shelly, our thoughts are with you and with your family.

Ms. ANDERSON: I appreciate your prayers. That - that's what lifts me up every day.

Mr. CANNON: Michel, thank you.

MARTIN: We wanted to give Transocean an opportunity to respond to the claims made by Shelly Anderson and her attorney. So we reached out to Transocean. A representative for the company, Lou Colasuonno provided this statement.

Mr. LOU COLASUONNO (Representative, Transocean): Nothing is more important to Transocean than its people and their families. I mean, it's a core value of the company and a driving principle behind our efforts to reach amicable financial agreements with those who lost loved ones. And we're doing that while we continue to provide full pay and benefits to those people. And today, in fact, we're going to gather with the families and to privately commemorate the loss of those courageous men one year ago today.

I would like to set the record straight, Transocean is, in no way, no form suing widows and children who were affected by this accident. Any assertion to the contrary is simply untrue.

MARTIN: That was Lou Colasuonno, a spokesman for Transocean. In a moment we get the perspective of a reporter who's been covering this issue. Please stay with us as we continue the conversation on TELL ME MORE from NPR News. I'm Michel Martin.

8 Great Communications Tools For Small Business : Technology ...

Apr 20, 2011 -

Social networks have revolutionized the way people communicate and collaborate?not only among friends and family, but also in the workplace. Many companies are now implementing social communications in their business to help them stay connected and simplify people's ability to share expertise, ideas and corporate information.

?

The good news is that there are a wide range of free or low-cost social collaboration tools to meet your business needs. Here are eight popular tools for small business social communications:

?

1.?Campfire

?

If your business involves frequently collaboration with many different colleagues, clients and vendors, consider using Campfire for real-time chats. Campfire is like instant messaging, but designed exclusively for groups. It also works with any IM client.

?

Campfire's Web-based, group-chat tool lets you set up password-protected chat rooms and invite others to chat, collaborate and make decisions. You can upload an image file, and it displays right in the chat room for all chat members to see. You can even invite the entire chat room to a conference call with one click. Since it's Web-based, you don?t need to download, install or configure anything?all you need is a Web browser and an Internet connection. Best of all, a basic package will cost you just $12 per month.

?

2.?Present.ly

?

Present.ly allows individuals to post short, frequent updates that are tracked or "followed" by others, similar to?Twitter. But unlike Twitter, Present.ly provides a secure and private way to do this, enabling users to share updates among members of a company without them being visible to the outside world. The basic service is free.

?

Present.ly enables you to share images, documents, video and audioclips with colleagues. The app is a great way to get quick feedback on a new design mockup, send out new policy documents for human resources or even post pictures from the company picnic. You can also keep the team conversations focused by creating groups for each project or topic of discussion?users will receive messages that are relevant to the topic at hand, and they're free to move between conversations as desired.

?

3.?Yammer

?

Does your business have team members in multiple locations, or are you a virtual team scattered across the globe? You might want to check out Yammer, which allows you to set up a private social network for your business to communicate, collaborate and share expertise via an easy-to-use, Web-based interface.

?

Want to read more on communications tools? Check these out:

?

While the product's wide range of features makes it appealing to large organizations, small businesses appreciate that Yammer lets you upload and share documents with co-workers and create communities for cases when you're working with partners outside of your network. ?

4.?CubeTree

?

Another tool to check out is CubeTree, SuccessFactors' social collaboration technology. CubeTree combines collaboration tools with a private social network. ?

5.?MangoSpring

?

Another one-stop-shop for social communication and collaboration is MangoSpring's MangoSuite, which includes microblogging, chat, document sharing and project management applications that work together in one integrated platform. You can mix and match the functionality you need, and you'll only pay for what you use, with prices starting at just a few dollars per user per month.

?

MangoSuite pulls together all of your employees' ideas, deadlines, milestones, threaded discussions, brainstorms, exchanged links and uploaded documents and makes them accessible in a real-time enterprise micro-blogging platform. Similar to how?Facebook's feed and commenting functionality works, sharing something with the group or project members generates a feed that is visible to the relevant team; users can then comment on any feed item.

?

6.?WizeHive

?

If your company's online life revolves around e-mail, WizeHive may be the choice for you. WizeHive is a collaboration platform that allows groups to share conversations, notes, tasks, calendars, files and other information in secure, private workspaces. ?

WizeHive integrates with any e-mail program?you can create new notes or tasks by simply sending a message to a special WizeHive e-mail address with the name of the workspace in the subject. Likewise, you can also receive WizeHive communications from your colleagues via e-mail. The starter package is free for up to three workspaces and 5GB of storage.

?

7.?Socialcast

?

Need your social communications technology to integrate with your existing infrastructure? Check out Socialcast. Socialcast allows companies to integrate their traditional systems (such as CRM and ERP) with its social software platform, enabling employees to collaborate and take action on the core processes being carried out by those systems.

?

In terms of core functionality, Socialcast offers internal activity streams, enterprise microblogging, employee profiles, groups, integration with SharePoint and even a desktop app and mobile version. The basic service is free, but for a few dollars per user per month, Socialcast offers?Socialcast Reach, which enables integration with CRM systems, ERP systems, HR business systems and more.

?

8.?Facebook Groups

?

Don't need any of these bells and whistles? You might want to look at Facebook Groups. Your employees are already on Facebook, they know how to use it, and it's free.

?

While Facebook Groups lacks much of the advanced features of other social collaboration technology, it has just enough functionality for staff to collaborate and work together. They can use Facebook Groups for real-time collaboration, do group chat using Facebook chat, and post photos, news and updates to the group feed. It even has basic document sharing and editing functionality.

?

Best of all, if you want your team to promote your business to their Facebook network, you don't have to send out an e-mail and hope people share?all you have to do is post an item to your Facebook feed and employees can "share" with just one click.

JPR Figures Show Nvidia Losing Market Share

Jon Peddie Research has released its Q1 2011 estimates, and the figures don't favor Nvidia. The research firm tracked strong gains for Intel and AMD (in terms of volume). AMD's total share of the GPU market rose to 24.8 percent, up from 21.5 percent a year ago (a gain of 24.8 percent total).? Intel came in at 54.4 percent, 9.7 percent higher than its Q1 2010 total of 49.6 percent. Both companies' gains were at the expense of Team Green?Nvidia's share of the market fell from 28 percent to 20 percent?a significant decline.

This loss of share partly reflects NV's decision to exit the integrated chipset market, but it's also an ominous sign of things to come. Sandy Bridge and Llano, once fully launched, will threaten NV's price points at the low end of the market. Intel's Ivy Bridge could mount a fresh challenge against NV's low-end bastions by the end of the year, while AMD's Llano is rumored to be significantly faster than Sandy Bridge's GPU.

Note:? JPR tracks sales by volume, not by revenue. AMD reported $413 million in GPU sales in its last quarter, compared to $886 million from NV.

For now, these threats are little more than shadows; Nvidia reported excellent quarterly results back in February. Measured according to product mixture or overall performance, Team Green is still playing a strong hand. Long term, however, we expect integrated GPUs from both CPU manufacturers will sap the company's earnings from the bottom up.

This isn't just a threate to NV's income. At the moment, the company has a spot at the table in any sort of API or graphics standard development? conference; its products power a huge section of the entire market. Marginalization would substantially hamper NV's ability to make its voice heard?AMD and Intel would become the de facto heavy weights, with the vast majority of graphics split between them. Poor positioning is part of what killed 3dfx; it's not a risk NV will want to take.

Nvidia may fight back by offering faster GPUs at cheaper prices, but the margins at the low-end of the market are quite thin. Long-term, this approach may likely prove unsustainable. Indeed, AMD will likely shed its own low-end SKUs below a certain price point, though likely not for at least another product generation. Even if it doesn't, AMD can offer OEMs the prospect of linking Llano's GPU
to a discrete product as it first unveiled with the 780G chipset. Nvidia has no such option.

The good news is that company executives clearly saw the problem coming. Nvidia has spent years working with the HPC community and explicitly designed certain features of its latest GPUs to meet the needs of such customers. Tegra, like Tesla, is a specialized product meant to appeal to a very different group of users than the core gamers and OEMs that have constituted NV's sales base to date. Nvidia's Quadro business shouldn't be discounted, either. NV's workstation solutions are a substantial source of revenue that won't be easily cannibalized by the availability of high-performance integrated graphics products.

Square gets financial backing from Visa, asks to see some ID

Everything's coming up Jack Dorsey these days. Last week Apple started stocking Square's iPhone credit card readers in its 235 US retail locations, and now, according to Reuters, Visa has put its plastic where its mouth is. The credit card giant has invested in the personal payments startup, scoring itself a spot on Square's advisory board in the process. No word on how much Visa is actually dropping on the company, but one thing stands to reason: it probably didn't make the deposit via Verifone. If you would like to invest in a Square reader, it'll cost you a lot less -- the company is still offering smartphone plug-ins for free on its site.
